Jabala – Me, My Guru
Sage Gautama smiled knowing for sure now that his decision to accept him as his student was absolutely right!”
I hadn’t heard this story
before now had I read about it. Few others said that they had heard it in some
discourse that they had attended elsewhere. But then, that wasn’t an important
fact. Having heard her lectures, attending her class, or her replies to queries
for the past 20-25 years, I felt I had heard it all – at least on subjects
that were common and repetitive – but No! Her explanation was not different
each time because of different stories or examples; it was so because we saw or
understood the issue from a totally different perspective. Even when I had
heard repeated stories, I still felt, I went back learning something new. There
was never a day when I or others had said “nothing new today”. Was it her
teaching or did our understanding grow over the years?
“When Satyakama reached Sage
Gautama’s ashram to become his disciple, Sage said “Satyakama take my 400 cows
into forest, tend them and bring them back” to which Jabala replied “Sir, I’ll
take them into forest and not return till they become 1000”.
Sage Gautama smiled knowing for sure now that his decision to accept him as his student was absolutely right!”
