On living in the moment – Me, My guru

On living in the moment – Me, My guru

She (our Guru) said “Be aware while taking bath daily” as if it was as easy as eating a toffee. I fought with that idea for over a year before realizing the impossibility of that ‘simple task’. So instead I decided to break it into smaller units – units which were manageable and I hit upon a plan. Instead of wanting to be Aware all through my bath, I simply decided to be Aware on ‘my last mug of water’ that I poured on self. Here, ever if I forgot or didn’t get it right, I could collect myself to be Aware for that ‘last mug of water’ by repeating that ‘last mug act’. Before long I succeeded in being Aware 80% of the time – I mean only the ‘last mug part’. Then I shifted to next level. Now I decided and started practicing to be Aware even during my First mug of water which I poured on my body. This way the exercise became simpler and before long I was Aware during my entire bath” said Rahul.

Here was the guy who was thinking way of putting into effect our Guru’s every word and here was the same I who only wrote down her words, dissected them, analysed and argued on them, praised or found fault in them – in short I did everything else except put ‘her teachings’ into practice.

No doubt there was this stark difference between me and Rahul and I envied him, complained and was hurt that ‘she’ was more partial towards him etc. I myself was responsible for all this gap and yet....and the sad part was I felt that even this was ‘her’ duty – to pull me out of this way of thinking and was so angry at her for not doing so and letting me be where I was! Kudos to my way of thinking and living!

On desires and decisions – Me, My Guru Crow, Parrot and other birds

On desires and decisions – Me, My Guru

Crow, Parrot and other birds

Contd.....

Sometimes, the voice you’ve raised may not be heard or even hushed. That doesn’t mean you’ve failed. What is important is ‘have you tried with 100% commitment’ to raise voice against what is wrong or not. Raising your voice doesn’t mean literally here. It is about putting across ‘the picture of Right and Wrong to the other’. Increase the quality of your argument instead of raising your voice. If you are doing that, then know you are ‘growing spiritually’ the right way and all the life lessons are to enable just that growth in you. Other things are just ‘add-ons’ that comes as goodies to us – that’s all!

So, time and now take a break from the world around you and spend time with yourself. Connect to your self. Sit in meditation and go through your life decisions. Write down pros and cons on each decision taken. Learn from them. Don’t start crying and come to me saying “Guruji, I am depressed, help and all”. No need for that ‘self-pity ride’. Just see your decisions clinically and learn from them. See how you’ve been repetitive with your mistakes in your asking change – learn and outgrow them to know your needs clearly and correctly” she concluded.

“Everytime we see crow or parrot we’ll relate to either of our desires – one that went wrong or right and do this exercise” said Shreya.

We all laughed. Yes we could remind ourselves of this fact everytime we saw a bird – infact and that can increase our awareness more....

Few years down the line in some other session we would look back to gauge benefit that we received from todays’ class but as of now, we would only enjoy jokes, biscuits and tea. As rightly said only Time could tell if our journey was worth it or not!....

On desires and decisions – Me, My Guru Crow, Parrot and other birds

On desires and decisions – Me, My Guru
Crow, Parrot and other birds

Contd.....

Not having clarity of thought at the start is the main cause of this entire drama. But no problem! As you paint the canvas of your life your way, also work on your self from within to know yourself better and to seek what you actually desire and want.

So was parrot wrong in making a wish? No! As already told neither crow nor parrot is right or wrong. Either way you live with the consequence and you lose something when you gain something – always in life. Now what is the price you are ready to pay to gain what you desire is a learning process that life enables us to do with these situations. So see it that way and enjoy it all the way instead of suffering at every nook and corner and bend of life.

Not making a choice is also a ‘decision’ and we have to live with consequence of that ‘inaction’ too! This entire game keeps going till your character hits the middle path of being wise. It means being strong enough to make a decision and change things that need to be changed because they are wrong. And to accept gracefully things that are right though they are not to my taste. Knowing when to take which decision is the wisdom that needs to be acquired by each one and only then has that person hit the ‘middle path’ of being ‘karma yogi’.

A balanced and wise person doesn’t mean accepting everything blindly that comes your way. Neither does Krishna telling ‘Take arms to fight against Dharma’ mean going against everything. Being above our likes and dislikes and yet acting according to dictum of ‘Right and Wrong’ is the sign of the ‘Regular Sadhak and his sadhan’.

On desires and decisions – Me, My Guru Crow, Parrot and other birds

On desires and decisions – Me, My Guru
Crow, Parrot and other birds

Contd...........

“Ask and it shall be given” is the word of God. He is not answerable to the consequences of your wish coming true, so spare Him that”. We all laughed. We did it everytime! We prayed, prayed and then cried when our wishes did come true too! Either way, we felt doomed always. Would we ever find satisfaction and happiness in our lives? I very much doubted that with our present state of mind.

“So learn to live with your desires fulfilled. Agreed you didn’t see it coming this way and you are not forced to stay put that way for ever too! Yes, that’s the good news. Heal again and ask for change of events again and do this till you are more comfortable than in pain with your circumstances and people in your life. You can do it ‘N’ number of times – no questions asked. Just don’t be a ‘cry baby’ and envious
of ‘others being happy’. That’s all! If you want to do it or decide to do it, I mean the crying, envying and being angry with Reiki, reiki master or God, you are welcome to do it, just don’t expect anything substantial to come out of it...and then when none of these work and you realize that and are desperate to work on your dreams and desires again, just start doing sadhan the right way and in time you’ll see things shaping up again....

Now I know your next doubt. “How long should I keep changing my ‘prayer’ and why can’t He give what I want the first time itself?” if you’ve played ‘card game’ you would understand my explanation easily. When you start card game you hold certain cards, most of them are useless and more of a liability to your hand, so you start changing one card at a time till you have a hand which is perfectly sequenced and you declare ‘Show’. Do you say ‘why can’t we take all the cards in sequence at the start of the game?’ I’ll not help you with the answer here. You find it yourself. Similarly, you change one ‘variant’ in your life (like salary, person, place of residence or some other materialistic possession etc) till you get more or less all that you seek finally.

On desires and decisions – Me, My Guru Crow, Parrot and other birds

On desires and decisions – Me, My Guru
Crow, Parrot and other birds

As usual I came late. My gang had that mischievous grin as they saw me. What could I do? I never wanted to be late but things always happened that way. But these friends of mine never understood that point. Not that they judged me on that either, just that they laughed everytime I tried to justify my ‘late coming’ with genuine reason. Not once did they say ‘it’s not your fault’. It pinched me a bit – not the hurtful way but in a guilty sort of way!

The session was in progress as I joined them.

In a certain forest lived a crow and a parrot and both were black and simple birds. Parrot saw itself in the water and felt it deserved to be more beautiful and pleaded to God to make it beautiful. Its prayer was listened to and then lo! It got its beautiful coloured body!

And today crow flies freely in the sky and the ‘beautiful parrot’ is caged.

As you see neither of them is wrong. Each took a decision and lived with the consequence. When we take a decision, we take into consideration one aspect of our desire and do it, but the price is paid for the decision as whole.

Divine or Universe assigns us a role for some reason. With that plan in mind, it places us accordingly in some set up and with same set of people. But as we don’t see its plan due to ignorance or our desires, we plan our life as per our wishes and desires. On that process we end up healing and praying for the same. It is not wrong. Neither does it mean that it is right. It just is! Well, if we pray contrary to our role as in Divine plan, then Divine does listen and Act accordingly and fulfills our wish – a la’ parrot case. Then, when our wish is fulfilled our fate falls in line with our new state of existence like parrot being caged. That is when we complain again. Now both God and Universe are confused. You’ve asked for something and when it is given also ‘you suffer with your wish being fulfilled’ that’s the tragedy of events.

Pray for others - Me, My Guru

Pray for others - Me, My Guru

Contd..........

‘When you pray, your heart opens up and gets automatically healed and that is your ‘love centre’ and when that opens up and expands it becomes your ‘power centre’ to get connected with all that is ‘divine in and of you’. That by itself heals you, transforms you and your life and all the people in your life.

And the easiest way to heal it is by praying for others – as many as you can. And as Reiki channels send healing to all such ‘sick people’ in your life.

When heart expands it itself insulates you against other negativities of your life in a very miraculous way. So let your day begin and end with ‘prayer for others and by sending reiki for others’.

Even dogs and worm work for their ‘grub’. What’s the difference between them and you if both are working at same level? Having got human body become worthy of it and raise above animal needs and instincts and ‘live for others’ few minutes and few times a day on regular basis. Again, I repeat, don’t quote this action again demanding and expecting some ‘goodies’ in your life. This is to better your character. And that by itself is the end. Being good is not a pre-requisite to some other end or gain in life. It by itself is the end. So, if you choose this option and work on it, keep it to yourself, don’t proclaim it to others – yes not even to me. Knowing all this and being very clear about it by itself is the end and not a technique to gain some material benefit sometime later in life or afterlife. Is it clear?”

Having received only our silence for answer she said “if you have understood then start sending reiki and your prayers for others now for next 1/2an hour without opining your mouth”. Having said this she left us for the day. We did what we had to. Then we left her place. How many of us would follow it was unknown as of now. Only time would tell that, but I was bit confused and also little excited. Yes, I was both as of now. Others were in hurry and we didn’t get to discuss it further. I wasn’t totally sure about myself. Maybe, few times I would ‘pray for others’ but.......hope someone’s prayer to give me clarity of thought comes to my aid............

Pray for others - Me, My Guru

Pray for others - Me, My Guru

Contd.....

“Pray for every person who emits and taints everything and everyone around them with hatred. Pray that they find peace within. Pray that they find and recognise and validate love in their life. Because, they are giving out hatred because that’s all they have with them. Bless them with love so that you get that love in their company later! You may choose to walk out on such persons – yet pray for them. Not because you forgive them. Not even because you understand them. Don’t! Don’t waste your precious energy and time in understanding them and forgiving them. Be as angry aas you are with them. But- just push that anger to one corner of your big beautiful simple heart. And with your remaining whole part bless them completely.

Don’t come to me asking why they didn’t change yet. Don’t let that question bother you. Don’t let it crop up. Instead look within. Are you more peaceful? Are your smiles more frequent? Do songs stay longer on your lips? Then know our purpose is ‘attained’. We are not here working so hard for ‘that person’s’ happiness and change of heart. No! It’s for our sweet self! And that ‘Self’ is dancing!!!

So, pray, pray for all who are mean, manipulative, irritating and grumpy and spoilsport. Find a negative trait in others so that you get more ‘reasons’ to pray for them/others. Use these peoples’ negativity to bring more stability in your character and peace within. This ‘type of selfishness’ is accepted and if anyone raises their finger, send them here, I’ll handle them. But you go ahead and pray/heal. Pray for others so often that God gets to do ‘double shifts’ to ‘clear your wish list file’”.

We all laughed. Her sense of humour was fantastic if you get it, I mean! It had a bit different flavour though. What audacity of hers to say “send them to me and I’ll tackle them”. It seemed like child’s play to her and it amused us.

On praying for others!

Pray for someone  -  Me, My Guru

“Pray for someone else! It has a ‘quality’ to bring more abundance and more blessings into life of a person who ‘prays for others’. That doesn’t mean you start doing it and then after couple of months later, call upon me and demand an explanation saying “I’ve been praying/healing for A,B,C and even X,Y and Z whom I dislike and who have hurt me a lot, yet why am I still suffering from this pain in my life?/why I am not getting an increment? Etc” I can only explain the way Universe responds to “Our certain acts’ and yet I am not responsible and answerable to your demanding and accusing questions” our Guru stopped. She was smiling as she let this sink in.

There was laughter everywhere as we knew the truth in her words. She gave us ‘insights’ into these secret Laws of Universe and we held her responsible for the fulfillment of our desires. We held her responsible as if she were spokesperson of Universe. Neither Universe nor she ever promised us or owed us anything and yet we felt they were obliged to our answer our questions and also our desires. No amount of healing did any good to this side of our character and attitude in most of us. Ofcourse, there were Rahul and few others on other side of this situation too and I doubted if we ever would be able to go on the other side like them. If she still had hopes on us, how can we let her fail? We had to get up and keep going every time we faltered. Not that my belief on Self was that good, but I trusted her faith in me more. And that forced me to come back on this track however long it took me to – everytime I lost it!

“Mein maan bhi loon kabhi haar
Tu mane na....”

मैं मान भी लूं कभी हार
तू माने ना।

“Even when I  accept defeat
You don’t....”

Be strong to face success!

Be strong to face success!

Whenever you are ‘free’ work on your shoulders and knees to make them and keep them strong so that when

a.       You are finally given higher or more responsibility, it sits lightly on your shoulders.

b.      When you are faced with adversities and are to face tough challenges (like Pandavas had to do during their ‘vanvas’ (retreat/exile into forest) or while waging Kurukshetra war) it seems like a sport to your strong shoulders and knees

c.       When you face adulation and success you are able to stand effortlessly and for long spells of time on your knees to face and bask in your success.

As you dream and work for success and increase in your responsibilities also make yourself strong enough to relish it!

Dignity of labour - Ramayana - Me, My Guru

Use this time to work on your skills that could be added advantage in your career. Use this time to relax and build good health. Do sadhan as much as possible as that is the one that’ll prepare you to be balanced and strong enough to face the success. Learn such of things that you always wanted to like dancing, language etc.

Go on the trip that you always longed to.

In short, do all that you can which you can’t once you ‘go busy’.  Live this moment fully so that tomorrow you don’t long for ‘this break day’.

“Yes Guruji, in school we wanted to grow up and now we would do anything to have our school-live”.

Each one of us related to this fact with our own experience of life and shared with others.

It was then it hit us  - the truth behind the whole lecture. But putting it into effect was a different ball game altogether. Not that we couldn’t. But we wouldn’t – simply because our logic would raise several questions with ‘but why me and etc etc...’.

It was true...we hardly wanted explanations as to why things were the way they were. We wanted situations to be what and how we wanted. We were like those kids – just 6-7 mths old who would pluck their own hair with their hands and cry out of pain and if we hit the hand so that they would release the hold then they would cry that we’ve hit them. Either way they would suffer and cry.

Waiting – it certainly was a lost Art in today’s world of 2mts noodles. It was painful. We were always in a hurry to be on a move – where and why we didn’t know. But as long as we were moving we felt safe. If we had to wait that felt like a ‘death’ to us! We were afraid of that space and emotion. We hated being there, when in fact as our Guru says “It is the best place to be and to experience love, peace and bliss”. I like many times didn’t understand what it meant but whatever it was, it must be worth it!

And I was ready to wait for that revelation to happen to me........

Dignity of labour - Ramayana - Me, My Guru

Dignity of labour - Ramayana - Me, My Guru

Contd......

“Every station in life has a purpose and utility. Yes, but they come at different times for each one of us, so we call them ‘problem times’ as we tend to not recognise them as we are totally clouded by our imagination, expectations, comparisons and conditions. In everybody’s life comes a time when there is a “lull period” or a “stagnant or no activity period”. That time no work seems to happen. Nothing moves. Our mind rotates the Universe 1000 times and yet in reality even a leaf wouldn’t have moved. This difference between ‘mental world’  or you can call it ‘world of your desires/intent/dreams’ and physical world or the hard faced reality is so vast and long that it looks like a dark never ending crevice that seems to suck us within.

But it is just an assumption! Remember, ‘even ‘This shall pass!’. Season is not the same all through the year. However beautiful and welcoming spring be it is followed by rainy and then autumn. Autumn is that part of year and season when nature and trees stand stark naked with all leaves shed. Barren they still hold their head high as they know ‘Springs around the corner’.

Ok, season’s time is fixed but it is not so in our life. For some it is one year and for some it is 7 years also. But the purpose remains the same. It’s time to be in sadhan, relax, learn and develop art of waiting and develop the art of enjoying ‘where you are’.  Because, only a person who uses this time correctly enjoys the hectic activity and success activity and success filled ‘after period’. Otherwise, one starts complaining ‘God, I am so busy maam, I feel bored and tired. Wish I had a break!’ and this wish when fulfilled we cry that we are not able to live life that we deserve!

Dignity of labour - Ramayana - Me, My Guru

Dignity of labour - Ramayana - Me, My Guru

They were totally confused. How can they take such an insignificant task so seriously? And where in that is there job satisfaction or opportunity for growth or a possibility of expressing one’s abilities? How come he is happy without any of these present? And to this Hanuman replied “Entire day as I need to notice when he yawns I need to look at Rama’s face without any distraction. What more can a bhaktha like me ask for? I get to keep seeing ‘the most beautiful face’ in Universe all day long. I am blessed and thanks for giving such an important task for me to carry out’.

Sita, Lakshmana and others were flabbergasted.

It’s not the work that maketh the man; it’s the man that maketh the job. Every job is equally important in the world. That’s why it is important for one and all to understand the ‘dignity of Labout’.

Having said this, our Guru went into meditation. Sometimes my mind worked in crazy ways. Now it said “She’s closed her eyes as she is afraid to face volley of questions that would follow this story”. I knew this to be far from truth but the voice in my brain kept pounding such irrelevant suggestions. It was at such times, I doubted my sanity. I even doubted if I was thinking with my brain or not?

But Rahul and few like him had their own explanation to explain her weird acts. They sounded terrific but I wished not to believe them and go with my brains rattling.

She opened her eyes and no sooner had she done that, the volley of questions were thrown at her.

“But my boss is no Rama. Infact he is more of Ravana so how can I be happy just working for him with no extra benefits”.

“Neither is it any good looking at my mean minded mil’s face” blurted Priya.

Everyone laughed. These characters universally seemed to assume these characteristics and adjectives. The surprising fact was everyone seemed to associate with such similies.

Dignity of labour – Ramayana Me, My Guru

Dignity of labour – Ramayana
Me, My Guru

Contd......

Or may, we ‘blew’ our problem so much that we believed it to be unique to us and it needed special treatment. It could also mean that I didn’t want or wasn’t accepting ‘the given solutions/answer’. The usual excuse for this was always ‘I know you would say this but....i agree with you but....’. We wanted an answer/solution our way only! And that was a dangerous condition we put ourselves in. It could mean any of the above reasons or all of them at once!

She being herself tried to put ‘the same and right solution’ in the ‘new bottle’ every time and those of us who were not part of the query like it. Whether we followed her advice and solution or not, whether we accepted it or not, one thing was for sure – we always enjoyed her stories that were part of her explanations. How she came up with so many of them was beyond us but it was good for us. We listened with rapt attention as she started her explanation “After waging war with Ravana and winning over him, Rama returned to Ayodhya along with Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman. After coronation, Sita, Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrugna distributed all the work related with Rama amongst them. They were in immense love with Rama and longed to serve him the best and hence chose as much work as possible to fulfil that desire of
theirs. Hanuman was left alone. He approached and sought some or atleast one work. Not able to drive him away completely and yet being unwilling to share their work with him, they hit upon a plan. They called him and said “Hanuman we want to give the most important work to you. That is, whenever Lord Rama yawns, you ought to click your fingers in front of his mouth”. He readily agreed and was seen to be with Rama – day and night. Others got irritated. They gave him such an insignificant job so they could spend all the time with Rama but here was Hanuman right in front of Rama – day in and day out not leaving his side even for a second. Irritated and greatly confused they sought an explanation from him and he replied thus “How can I be careless in fulfilling my role? So, I am with Lord Rama day in and day out as one never knows when he would yawn”.
