Bhagavatam

Bhagavatam

(Note : Let me clarify a small point.  Bhagavatam is an ocean - of knowledge that could gives us insight into human nature, the laws of nature/universe - like the working of karma, the reason for rebirth and the cause and factor that decides our birth and ultimately the procedures to break the shackles of bondage.

If I write in detail on Bhagavatam, it would not permit me to discuss other issues.  So, I'll write few stories from Bhagavatam.  If you have any questions or stories that you wish to read about, let me know, I'll write the same!).

After the war of Kurukshetra, with the view of avenging Duryodhana's and his father's death, Ashwathama used "Brahma-Astram" with the intention that it should kill the foetus of "Uttara" - Abhimanyu's wife.  Then, there would be no heri left of Pandavas.  Uttara was wedded to Abhimanyu - a great warrior who was killed by a group of Kaurava warriors - which was unethical as per the rules of war of those times.  Of course, now we proudly say "Everything is fair in love and war" - a moral that we have imbibed from the Western world.  And no doubt, our morals are degrading day-by-day.

If you/we want to talk about our past glory and feel proud, quote our scriptures.  But, if you/we want to reach and experience the zenith of our glorious past and our heroes, then we've to live as per "Dharma" - Vedic Dharma that is totally based on impartiality and that which adheres to Truth!  And the best part is that "Dharma is same for everyone" - not like western philosophy which says "show me the man, I'll frame the rule!"

The Truth

Only thing in this world is impermenance....even the good times come to an end sometime....

but the good news is even the pain comes with an expiry date...

remember, the tree in full bloom also has to shed its flower - all of it...

and the bare tree again springs to full bloom after autumn...

remember, if it's autumn can spring be far behind....

Me, My Guru

...contd.....

"Then, first and foremost stop whinning and going around complaining to others and to yourself that you are in mess and that this is messy and that this is the worst situation to be in!  It isn't!  Then sit and collect yourself and write down your doubts and your desires - here - getting a job.  Think only about how to get a job - All other matters are redundant.  Start somewhere - it doesn't matter where!  Whenever, a person takes a break - whether it be a personal choice or a forced one due to circumstances, it is too difficult to start again.  The system and the mind has got used to a pattern of living (here a closed one - since it is about staying at home!) and hence very difficult to break that security blanket and come out of it.  Overcome that fear.  Do re-birth meditation and hands-on regularly to overcome it.  Then do intension reiki to get a job.  But, first of all in three days find some job, I repeat some job, even if it is at a petrol bunk take it - it is fine.  Just get one and walk out of that house of yours.  Once you start getting used to going out daily, you'll be more open to taking up jobs more challenging and fulfilling or befitting your qualification.  Overcoming your fear is the only hurdle you've to look into!  Nothing else matters" she concluded.

"But, how does that solve my brother's problem?" asked Radhika a little irritated.

"You can just do reiki that he gets on and that he has clarity regarding his career - that's all!  All other things are cooked up inside your head.  Just drop it!  You can't stop others from worrying!  No one can - so relax - and just take care of your life for now and other things will follow suit"  replied my Guru.

Radhika fidgeted with her fingers for sometime, wiped her tears and left without a word.  I knew, she wasn't all that happy with the answer.  But, after listening to the entire talk, I doubted if she ever wanted a solution at all!  And i knew from my personal experience that if she followed what our Guru advised her to, she could be more than happy - very soon,  But, that she had to put into practice what was asked of her.  And that I doubted.  No, not because I knew her.  I hardly knew her.  But, because I've seen so many people with similar situatons come to my Guru and than go back to their same living.  And my Guru's advise was always about changing one's mind-set , attitude and it had to do with attacking the problem and solving it rather than sit and discuss about it!  Only time would tell if she benefitted from this talk or not!  I certainly did as I could think of applying it in so many areas of my life!

Even today, I received something valuable from her and she gave so lavishly!  I thanked her for that and left her place with a smile on my lips..........

Me, My Guru

........contd.....

I could see no problem there.  Both of them were very clearly messed up with imagination.  That's all!  Her brother wanted to do MS and was guilty of not being able to get a job?  Clear case of confusion reigning strong!  How can someone give solution to this issue?" I wondered.

My Guru smiled, patted her hands and started "Krishna said to Arjua "Even small karma finds its way to its doer and give results.  But, even I don't know as to which karma comes when, in which form and why only then? If Lord himself can't exactly say which karma we are undergoing now, how can I a simple mortal explain that?

But, one thing I know, whatever we are experiencing it's cause surely is in our past actions.  What is the purpose of knowing which karma?  Does knowing the cause of cancer make any difference in the suffering or the growth of cancer? When the answer is no, then instead of knowing why we got cancer, we should ask the question what is the cure for it and how to combat cancer now once I get it. Right?

Likewise, put your energy in facing the situation and finding a solution to it - rather than finding the reason for situaton to exist.  By trying to find the cause, we are trying to find a path in darkness and thereby want to wallow in self-pity which will give rise to anger because we are suffering and envy because others don't seem to suffer our pain.  This way our pain increases and we are deep into the quagmire of pain and suffering.  And when Dr. declares us as "Depression" patient, we find it as a support to be in that state and are rejoicing at and with this badge of Depression?  Do you want it?" she asked and her voice was stern.  It was too evident.

Radhika looked a bit shaken.  She couldn't say yes, I believe and said "no, no, i don't want that.  Tell me a way to come out of it".

Me, My Guru

Oh! My Woes!

She was surrounded by her students by the time I went to meet her.  They were in the middle of some discussion.  I simply joined them after placing a glass of water near my Guru (for her to drink) and after having lighted an incense stick.

I heard Radhika speak as I sat down.

"But, Guruji, I don't know what to do? I want a job.  As you know, I wanted one for the last one year but I couldn't apply anywhere as I was confused.  Not that I am clear now.  But, I must go for one now!  And I don't know how to write or present my CV.  I don't want to give false information as it would add to my karma and I don't want that to happen" Radhika was still blabbering as I was lost in confusion.

"What exactly is she trying to say?"  I thought.  If she wanted to work, why she didn't apply yet?  If the person is serious, does he not lood for the job if he is desperate?  Why is she confused to apply?  Don't know to write CV and you are sitting and grilling this poor lady just because she is listening?  I mean, woman are you listening to yourself"  I could literally hear myself shouting it loud in my head!  This woman really got me!

But, I continued to listen to her talk further "And my brother hasn't got a job.  Not that, he is trying for one.  He wants to complete his MS and...well, he is guilty of being dependant and is spoiling his health - not that it would be of any use but....

Why Guruji, why is all this happening in my life/ our life? (me and my family's life)  Which karma of ours is coming back?" she completed with tears rolling down her cheeks.

Notice

Dear everyone,

Please understand that I answer everybody's question - for me there is no good or bad question.  There is nothing as silly or profound question....it's just that i answer it in the order of receiving the question....first question posed is addressed first and then i work my way to the latest question.....

usually as you can see, the questions posed are many and the time taken to answer every question is long....(say 3-4 days) and so the other questions take a little longer for me to answer....not that i don't know how to answer - well, jokes apart....i can't answer all the questions at a time....so please, please have patience....do reiki for muladhara....if you are impatient when you don't find your issue addressed immediately, then understand you need to work on your patience...do reiki for muladhara immediately....that can solve your problem too in many cases.....

i answer even the questions posed through mails - but since some of the questions are too personal i can't answer them directly and so i explain through various characters - mythical or imaginary as the case may be....please find your answers in these posts.....(hidden) - though i use few of your words verbatim so that you can easily know it is your question/ problem/ issue that i am addressing.....but in such cases i can't address you and say " have you found your answer dear XXX).....

if you are 'AWARE' you'll find answers and explanation through the pictures that i post too! every post's picture is related to it's explanation.....but the question is 'are you aware?'  i don't just pick up a photo / picture randomly and post it just to increase the colour of the post....no....

for eg.  today's post has a violet coloured multi-petalled flower.....just as it takes time, work of nature (as a team -  sunlight, earth, air, chlorophyll, other chemical that gives violet colour to this flower, birds, insects, water, oxygen, carbondioxide and various others elements work together to give out this flower and mind you not for their benefit) but the tree is not impatient to receive it in it's life....the flower can't happen in a day - it takes few months/ years of work to let a flower bloom and that many days of work can wither away in few hours or a day or two....so think how long it takes our desires to become a reality and even when they do - there is no permanence to them.....if you understand this, then the suffering that we get while waiting for 'something' to happen (inspite of doing sadhan, meditation or reiki!) would be not there....
we would wait for the blooming of the flower of our hardwork with love and expectancy only.....

the nature gives out flower after so much of hardwork and time and yet many times it is not even noticed - forget about validating the tree's work or singing the beauty of the flower....and we complain there is no beauty in our life!

we complain that people are not recognising our hard work!

we complain that we don't have anything to celebrate in our life!

just look around.....everything in the nature is meant to bring a smile on your face...to cheer you up...and yet i am here sitting and counting my problems 1 to 5 again and again and saying "why do i have these 5 problems?"

mana ke andhera bahut hai lekin
raath lakhon tarein bhi tho saath lathi hai.....

agreed that it is very dark but
doesn't night bring millions of stars with it....

think ..........

thank you for seeking answers and trying to find solutions for your problems instead of complaining about them.....but at the same time i repeat, please develop patience....

all the best....

Mahabharata - a epic

...contd....

If you don't believe in re-birth and so not in heaven and hell, your mental peace is totally dependent on your character.  A wrong doer is always living in fear and there is no greater hell than fear.

One who is not responsible will never respect himself and insecurity becomes his surname.  And out of that insecurity, he will envy every person who is right - since he knows he can never be him (one who is walking the path of righteousness!).  Envy can never give contentment inspite of owing the whole world.  An envious person can never be proud of himself and will play all games to get a 'good name'.  Even when he gets one, since he knows he doesn't deserve it, will be more fearful of losing it, will be more manipulative so that others don't see through his reality and the chaos continues....and you called him successful looking at his bank balance and other achievements?

Read and re-read all of these once again - again and again to actually understand it!  That is ofcourse if you really want to benefit out of it!  If it is enough to 'complete reading' then once is more than enough!

Wishing you strength to see through your follies and courage to face it and my blessing for you to overcome them and to be able to walk on the 'Right Path' with 'Right People' ALWAYS!

Mahabharata - a epic

...contd....

This is how this story has to be understood and remembered!

With this understanding, we would be inspired to walk on the path of Dharma and not take short-cuts or wrong approaches to fulfill our desires or passions.

But, instead if we see this story in a wrong way and ask 'Pandavas suffered so much because  of being good and Kauravas enjoyed inspite of being bad', then we need to question our defination of suffering and abundance.  We also need to look within honestly - because this question shows that we have decided to walk the path of adharma and are finding excuses and examples of great people and from their lives to quote and prove that we are right in our wrong!

"Every thought decides our future " not just immediate but janmas to come....I've already explained this so many times.  Under no circumstance, character can be compromised in exchange for worldly goodies.  Because these luxuries come with a expiry date - be it power, money, assets etc - but character is the seed from which our all future janmas come out!

If you are the one who doesn't believe in after-lives, then to enjoy heaven, we need to do good deeds only, as bad deeds will push us into hell.

Mahabharata - a epic

...contd...

Good deeds done by Asuras also are considered and they are benefitted accordingly.

At the same time, wrong deed (like Yudhishtra telling half truth!) done for a good cause also doesn't become good.  Wrong is wrong - done by anyone whether that person gets caught or not by others.  Wrong is wrong - even though logically argued by the doer and proved to be right under such of circumstances....

Hell and heaven are not to be taken as some place to go and suffer/enjoy after death.  The moment one commits a wrong, the guilt, fear, insecurity, restlessness that he suffers, pain and envy that he experiences - all these mean one is in hell - it is living hell.  How many times I have heard people say "I've everything Guruji, no dearth of money, excellent life and health and everything - yet no peace and happiness."  This just means that, that person is experiencing hell for the sins he has committed.

And I've seen people not well most of the time, with lots of responsibilities and few or none to support them and their life is one long lonely struggle.  Yet they are so happy, sharing, caring for others and spreading smiles all around them.  Many times, these are the people whom  people envy a lot and yet they hardly complain.  Yet they are content and peaceful 'inspite of circumstances' not because of circumstances.

Being right, they have experienced heaven in their very heart!

Mahabharata - an Indian epic

...contd...

Utterance of sentence that implied wrong meaning also was/is a sin which had to be paid for.  This Universal Law is beautifully brought forth by this anecdote in Mahabharata....Inspite of the fact, that this sentence was asked to be said by Lord Krishna himself.  This goes to prove that even if the Lord for the good asks you to do something wrong, do it by all means as it is his command, but YOU have to bear the consequences - nevertheless!!!

Duryodhan and his allies, however cruel they were they also committed few good deeds and so were benefitted with stay in heaven for equivalent amount of time and were later shifted to hell for the rest of their astral lives.

The rule of enjoying the fruits of ones' karma as said by Lord Yama is that one's less karma, be it good or bad is first enjoyed by the person and the fruit of bigger portion is later confined to him.  For eg. Pandavas wrong was less when compared to their punya karma and hence they were made to experience hell - the result of bad karma and then they were shifted to heaven as a fruit of their punya karma....whereas Duryodhan 's punya was less when compared to the paap i.e, sins that he had committed and hence he was allocated heaven first and then when his punya was exhausted he was shifted to hell!!!

We can also understand that both good and evil deeds have their respective repurcusions and none can escape them.

Mahabharata

...contd......

When Yudhistra entered heaven, he went searching for his brothers and wife Draupadi but instead he saw Duryodhan and his friends and brothers.  He was confused and asked about the whereabouts of his family members.  He was told that they were in Hell and he got really very angry and said that he wouldn't stay in heaven where the likes of  Duryodhan, shakuni were and would prefer to be in hell where his family was!

He was led to hell as requested.  There he was shocked  to see his brothers suffering the tortures of hell and he cried out in pain.  All the people present there said they found relief because of his presence and requested him to stay there longer, so that they can be relieved off their sufferings.  Yudhishtra agreed.  The moment he agreed, Lord Yama came and said "You all can go to heaven as you your sins have been paid for with your suffering."  Yudhishtra asked as to what sins they committed for which they were paying for and Lord Yama replied "you all killed your enemies with deceit and hence you have to pay for your deceit!".

Satisfied with the answer, Dharmaraj asked "then, why am I to bear this pain? and why should I experience hell?" and Lord Yama replied "though the war was fought for Dharma, the means used by you were deceitful and hence you were brought to hell by deceit.  You will receive what you give! This is the Law of Karma.  And you had lied once when during the war of Kurukshetra, you had uttered "Ashwathama hatha hatha (the second hatha you just mumbled in your mouth) kunjathaha" there by, instead of the sentence 'Ashwathama named elephant is dead' , it was understood as 'Ashwathama is dead'.  This was mistaken by Guru Drona as his son being dead and he kept down his weapons.  (As per the law of war in those days, once a person - a warrior lays down his arms he can't take it back to fight again!)  And Guru Drona was then killed by Arjuna.

Mahabharata

........contd......

Now regarding the part where Pandavas went to Heaven.....

When the time for the departure of Pandavas came, they left for the sacred mountains.  When they were climbing the sacred mountain, Draupadi first fell down dead and Bheema asked Yudhistra as to what reason she who was so pious and dutiful fell dead. Yudhistra said that though she was married to all five of them and she served them all well, her love for Arjuna was partial. She loved him more than her other husbands.  This fault of her caused her death.  Next Sahadeva fell and when asked for the reason, Dharmaraj said "He was very proud of his wisdom and thought no one was his equal and that brought about his fall".

Next Nakula fell dead and Dharmaraj explained "He was very proud of his beauty and he thought no one was any where near him in his beauty".  Next Arjuna felt and he said "He was proud of his skill of archery" and when finally Bheem fell and asked for the reason of his fall, Yudhistra said "you were proud of your strength and enjoyed eating so much that you never respected the need of others while eating or filling your stomach".

Finally, only he was left and he kept walking towards the mountain top and along with him a dog which had been following him from Indraprastha.  When he reached the top of the mountain, a heavenly chariot came and Lord Indra asked him to get into the chariot which would take him to heaven.  Yudhistra said "I can't come to heaven when my family is dead down here."  and Indra replied "Don't worry, your family is in heaven already and you can join them there" and when he was about the get into the chariot, the dog was denied permission to get into heaven by Indra and Yudhishtara said he couldn't leave behind a dog which has accompanid him all through his journey as this was against his dharma and hence he preferred to let go off the joys of heaven to letting go off the dog.

Dog immediately got transformed into Lord Yama and congragulated Yudhistra on passing his final test and he took the chariot to heaven.

Mahabaharata

.......contd.......

But, this difference can't be easily understood by people who live for 'I, me, myself'.  How can the bliss that comes of living a righteous life be understood by those who are run by only passions and their desires?

How can one who is envious, know what it is to live for others and why it is imperative to live for others?  This, inspite of not getting any goodies in such a way of live?

How can people who are bothered only about food, clothing and shelter aim for higher causes and fight and live for it?

A simple example will elucidiate this point.  Immediately after getting Independence, India had to face huge riots, massace everywhere in the name of religion.  Can you imagine people saying "what is the benefit of this freedom?  We were better off as slaves under British.  We were atleast alive then.  Now, there is so much of bloodshed everywhere."  What would you say to such a person?

If you say, that person is right, all I can say is no one can make you see the obvious and if you see the point, I don't have to explain.....right?

Mahabharata - An Epic

......contd......

When they successfully completed the term, they returned to Hastinapur and asked for their kingdom to be returned to them.  When they were denied, they requested Duryodhan to give them atleast five villages.  Duryodhan didnot agree for that too!

Not only that, every wise man like Sage Veda Vyasa, Bhishma, Vidura, Krishna and many like them wanted just and noble king to rule over Bharata Desha (India as was called then..) and Yudhishtra was epitome of justise - whereas Duryodhan was anarchy personified.  The 'right' when it doesn't stand up against the wrong, it is also 'adharma' nay it is greater 'adharma' - injustice than a wrong being done!  In a kingdom where even the empress was not safe from molestation, do you think it would be right for Pandavas to sit back and let things be....Could they let Duryodhan rule?  Do you think ordinary men and women would be safe in such a land?  If one wants people to be safe, women protected and Dharma to reign, then the 'Right' should wage war against the 'Wrong' and 'Evil' if need be!

Hence, war was fought.  Not for themselves but not to let anarchy rule the kingdom.  But even the war fought for Dharma has the same results of children becoming orphans and women being widowed.  This is called as collateral damage caused when any step is taken for the greater good.  Everyone has to pay the price of safety and security.  Did not thousands die and suffer for the freedom of India from British rule?  Can you say that it was unnecessary?

But the people who suffered did vent out their anger on Pandavas and abused them, taunted them saying that they were selfish.  But, the actuality is everyone should pay a price for safety, freedom and to live with pride.

Even Pandavas lost all their children, kith and kin - yet atleast they could see their grandson growing up - King Parikshit - son of Abhimanyu - whereas Kauravas clan was totally destroyed.  They could rule for many more years and bring about prosperity and establish Dharma.  Their desire and dream was to establish Dharma and they could fulfill that.  That way they fulfilled their Swadharma and life's mission.  Their life was one of fulfillment unlike Kauravas and their friends which was lived for selfish reason and out of envy.  They never were peaceful and died walking on the path of Adharma.

Mahabharata - an Indian Epic

Mahabharata-sacred texts

The question was something like "....Excellent but I also have one more question I read in few books that yudushtira was the only one to be offered heaven and all his brothers and wife were offered hell duryodhana who caused the war was offered heaven why? They also say that after the war the kingdom was full if sorrow and unhappy compared to the time duryodhana ruled please explain ...."

After the war of Kurukshetra, like in every war and after every war women lost their sons, husbands and brothers and children became orphans.  The worst hit during and after war is always women and children - both innocent and who don't like and want war.  Pandavas too like them didn't want and like war.  But, they were forced by Duryodhan and his allies to wage war.  They fought not for themselves.  Never make a mistake of coming to that conclusion.  (Usually people justify their fight out of greed and envy using Pandavas stand as an eg...).  If it had been so, they wouldn't have asked for Khandava Vanam (A forest infested by dangerous snakes and demons) to build their empire as their share from King Dhritarashtra.  They could've asked for a prosperous, fertile and equal portion of land as their share from Dhritarashtra and he couldn't have said no to them.

This they asked after Duryodhan tried burning them alive in Vanavrat - building made of wax.  They didnot even fight after this injustice was meted out on them.

Later, when they converted Khandavavan into a prosperous city of Indraprasth, Duryodhan out of envy wanted to take away all their wealth and so hatched a plan along with Shakuni.  According to that plan, Pandavas were invited to Hastinapur, Capital of Kauravas and Pandava's entire kingdom was snatched in gambling by Kauravas.

Later, they were forced to live in forests for 12 years and incognito for one year and the condition kept that if they were recognised, then they had to go and live in forests again for 12 years.....

The Epics of India - Mahabharata

...contd....

It also goes to prove that the character of the child depends upon the feelings - like feeling of anger and helplessness in Ambika was the cause of Dhritarashtra's characater and a feeling of weakness in Ambalika and hence the weak constitution of Pandu and a feeling of gratitude and elation in maid and hence Vidura was so humble, contended and balanced.

Theory of genetics proved so beautifully and completely with all combinations.

Again in the case of Krishna rejecting Duryodhana's invitation - it clearly explains us that the Lord wouldn't be pleased with the cost of offerings.  For him, it's only love that matters and love can be experienced, given, served only and only when the intent is pure.  He knew Duryodhan's intent.  Duryodhana wanted to flatter him with his hospitality and gifts and Lord could see through that.  Lord is no fool.  He can't be fooled by our pretences.  So, with our pooja, japam, meditation.  We can fool the world to believe that we are good, pious, religious, caring and spiritual - but Lord - no way.  He sees through us and we receive fruits of our Karma based on our intent and not on our actions.

This truth has to be seen in these cases and then applied in our day-to-day life situations.  That means, instead of 'trying for good name' we should work on our intent and make and keep it pure in all our dealings - not only with Lord, but also in our worldy affairs - i.e., in our every realtionship.  If this message is not understood, applied and turned into our way of life - then mundane reading or memorising the scriptures is of no use.  Their actual purpose is lost and all the effort put in reading them becomes waste of time and energy!

(This is answer to the query as to who Vidur and Vidurani was?)

The Epics of India - Mahabharata

...contd...

Vidurani

Vidurani is referred as wife of Vidura in Mahabharata.  Just before the start of Mahabharata war, Krishna comes to talk peace with King Dhritarashtra, but the talks fail - thanks to Duryodhan and his uncle Shakuni.

Duryodhan makes elaborate preparations in the palace for Krishna to stay.  But, Krishan refuses to stay there.  The reasons he gives for his refusal are 1. I take food served with love only and the food served by you - Duryodhana is not served with love and 2. I eat food anywhere when I am desperate for food and am on the verge of dying and now I am neither desperate or dying for want of food.  Having given these reasons, he goes to Vidura's house which was a only small house.  He was not at home as he was not expecting Krishna.  His wife Vidurani was at home and she was overwhelmed to see Krishna.  She warmly welcomed him inside the house, gave him seat to sit and went in to get something to eat.  She found only bananas at home. She brought them to Krishna and peeled them and in the excitement threw away the bananas and gave him peels.  Krishna accepted the peel and was eating them when Vidur entered the house and seeing what was happening he shouted at Vidurani for being so careless as to serve banana peel to the Lord.  Krishna stopped him and said that those were the most delicious peels he ever had!

But, when you read especially our epics, don't read them as stories of some characters and don't try to know some story or anecdote about the various characters.  Learn to see the 'Universal Law' working.  Learn it as you can easily understand through some characters and their life situations.

For eg: With regards to Vidura's birth, it's very clear that though all three - Dhritarashtra, Pandu and Vidur had greatest Sage Veda Vyasa as their father - their personalities and physical well-being depended totally on the thought on their respective mothers at the time of conception and the feeling they had for the Sage.

The Epics of India - Mahabharata

....contd....

So, when the young princes came of age, Vidur was given prime- ministership when Dhritarashtra became King.  He was just, pious and righteous personified.

He loved Pandavas like his own kids and wanted them to be prosperous and happy as they were virtuous.  Pandavas also sought his opinion on important matters as they knew he wished them good and was impartial while taking any decision apart from being wise.

'Vidura Neeti' is a compilation of Vidura's Neeti which is the ultimate book on polity and Chanakya's arthashashtra is considered to be inspited by Vidura Neeti.  Even King Dhritarashtra trusted his knowledge and opinion in the matters of state and totally dependent on him to run the affairs of the state ( i.e., before Duryodhana came to control the affairs of running the state through his father started).

He was one of the few in the Rajya Sabha who was against Pandavas being waged in the gamble and also gave due counsel to King Dhritarashtra against Draupadi being brought to the court after being lost in the game of gamble by Yudhishtra to Duryodhana.  He always stood for Dharma and without fear openly and in clear words spoke about the wrongs done by others - without any partiality.

Vidura was a great bhaktha of Lord Krishna and Lord Krishna also reciprocated his love with due respect for Vidura.

As per some scriptures, Vidur is considered to be Lord Yama - Lord of Dharma, virtue and death reborn as Vidur because of a curse given to him by a Sage called Mandukya.

King Shantanu of Kuru Dynasty married a fisher-woman Satyavati who gave birth to two sons - Chitrangadha and Vichitravirya.  Chitrangandha died unmarried and issueless.  Vichitravirya was married to Princess Ambika and Amalika.  But, he two died and Satyavathi not wanting the Kuru Clan to end, requested her son Sage Krishna Dwaipayana to bestow motherhood upon the two widowed queens.  Unable to brush aside his mother's request, he agreed to.

Though he was a great sage of high learning, his looks were frightful.  And so Ambika closed her eyes when she went to him and so she gave birth to a blind child -Dhritarashtra.  Ambalika was so weak with fright when she approached him that she gave birth to a son of weak constitution -Pandu.  Satyavati wanted a healthy child - to be fit enough to be a king and hence requested Ambika to approach Sage Vyasa once again.

Out of fear for him, she sent her maid who consented happily as she felt it a great honour and a great priviledge to bear the child of such a great sage as Sage Vyasa.  So, her son Vidur was born - both healthy and highly learned.  But, as he was born of a maid, he was not given the kingship.  Bheeshma, the grand old man of Kuru Clan brought all three of them under his care and Vidur mastered 'Dharma' very well under him.

Ugadi

...contd...

I paused.  I was trying to internalize all that she just said.  She let me be!

"And you say all this is possible only if I bury my past and make a new beginning."

I asked, still not convinced about the connection.

"Yes, in a way" she started "This moment is complete.  But, to experience is next to impossible as long as I am lost in yesterday or dreaming about tomorrow" she concluded....

I still couldn't get it all.  As I never did.  Not because I didn't understand it literally.  That I did completely.  But, something was beyond words which I wasn't grasping - that much I knew.  And for that I need to keep thinking abou the entire conversation till I get it completely.  And that would be possible, only if I experience what she said so casually.  But, for that, I need to put to practise letting go of past, receiving this moment with freshness and newness.  I should not practise it just on Ugadi.  I knew, after being with her all these years, she never said anything that trivial as related to only one day.

I had to live every moment for itself.  And just a thought of it and I knew - this could be a long journey within and it's not that would come effortlessly.  No, I had to practise it religiously and with faith God knows for how many years - may be it would take janmas.  Break I'll umpteen times.  And I am sure, she'll be there guiding me, cozxing me, reminding me in her own little way and style in so many ways - that if I made an attempt, she'll hold me up against all perils.

But, it was not about her.  It was about me, my endurance, my perseverance, my faith, my dedication, my will and above all the strength of my desire to experience what she explained....

This time I wanted to put it into practise - for my own sweet sake and I decided to let her know - but she had gone into the mediation hall.  I found her sitting in meditation there.  I bowed to her.  I left without disturbing her.

This "Ugadi" really was going to be my "new beginning"....

I smiled happily as this thought crossed my mind......

Ugadi

...contd...

"No, it doesn't.  This year too will be a mixed moments of joys and achievments like jaggery, few failures, disappointments, few setbacks and little pain like the bitterness of neam with a splash of sour tamarind i.e., few exciting moments with a dose of mangoes which is rare, seasonal and looked forward  to by all.  Ugadi pachchadi ( a speciality prepared only on the day of Ugadi) represents just this!  This is a remainder that life wouldn't be boring or monotonous with one flavour - it's going to be full of all flavours of life this year too!"

I frowned a bit and said in a low voice "If everything is going to be same, then what's the purpose of starting or making a new beginning?"

"The food we eat today goes out as feces next day.  We all know this.  Yet, don't we make elaborate menus and look forward to eating everyday.

The ingredients remain the same. Have the number of vegetable increased over the years.  It's the same fruit, same vegetables. Don't we still relish them every time.  Why?  Because, every time we treat them as our first time....and that is possible because we are able to make way in our stomach by pushing all that we have eaten and digested - out!".

The newness doesn't come by a new ingredient, new locations, new entry of person or profession.  It comes in the way - we meet it. That is - with a new vigour and new expectation.  The biryani that we love, do we say, "I've eaten it ten times in my life - so what's new this time."  No, never.  It's the same biryani - yet it is not the same for us.  It's new!  Does that sound paradoxical!  Just observe yourself with your favourite ice-cream, chocolate, dress etc. on two different days.  Then, you would understand what I am saying.  But, we restrict it to physical things and that too to our favourites.  Apply this approach with every person you meet (especially those whom you meet on daily basis and see the flavours of relationships come out off life" she paused with a question on her face as "did you get it now?"

Ugadi

...contd...

"The moment" she smiled and continued "of the past is over and out.  So, in all sense it is dead and gone.  However, beautiful or painful it had been, it still is dead.  It is no more.  And yet we live in the past.  As long as I am in the past, how can I experience today?  As long as I am holding on to yesterday's pain how can I experience today's joy fully? Tell me, is it possible" she asked.

I nodded my head in negative.

"Now, tell me, can you make a new beginning with the old baggage?" she enquired.

I nodded my head sideways meaning no.

"That means to welcome something new, I need to let go of all the past - good and bad and face the new with freshness that comes with nothing" she continued and

"I didn't understand that" I said with head down.

"Fine.  Look at children.  They fight, they play, they hurt themselves and sleep.  When they get up, they are like clean slates.  They don't carry yesterday's any memories.  And their energy comes from that state of mind.  And so, does their happiness.

"Yes, it's clear now" I replied "But, does this mean the new will be good and positive only if I do this way?"

She laughed and her laughter sounded like a chime of a bell.

Ugadi

...contd....

She began "Ugadi" means "Beginning of a yuga" and it also means "Beginning of New Era"  But, to make a new and fresh start, I need to be new, Right?"

"But, why at all I should begin something and what should I begin and what is this new me you are talking about?" I interrupted.

"The whole of the year we go through" she started explaining "ups and downs of life and at the end of the year have a heavy baggage of pain, failures, dreams shattered, hopes lost, hearts and relationships broken apart from some joy, new achievement, some new beginnings et like.  By the time "Ugadi" comes, it's one whole year which has passed by!  As Ugadi is beginning of a new year as per vedic religion.

It's timed such that it represents spring season - new leaves find their expression on the trees where old leaves have fallen off!  This is a sign from the Universe that all that is old should wither and fall off and new will find it's way in it's place.  That doesn't mean you end your present relationships and go in search of new ones! No.

But alll the memories of the past year like - she didn't do this, she did this, he said this, he didn't do this, she said this and meant so......(oh, my God the list goes on and if you make a list of them you'll know the dirty baggage we carry in our relationships) and that certainly affects our perception and no doubt this year is more painful than the last.  So, drop all that is dead and gone!"

"But, where is the relationship dead?  It certainly is not gone!  So, how do I drop it?" I asked her cutting her sentence.

Ugadi

Me, My Guru

Today, being Ugadi, I got up early and completed my routine tasks and made my way to meet my Guru.  It's believed that the way we lead our day - today i.e., the day of Ugadi - our entire year is more or less the same.

I wanted to spend major part of today with my Guru.  That way, maybe, I'll get to be with her all through the year. I was excited.  I was happy as I made my way to her place.

It was still early by most accounts and I saw her watering the plants.  This sort of surprised me!  I actually expected her to be in the midst of some elaborate religious or atleast spiritual ritual.  And here, she was watering the plants as ever - nothing new!

But to shock us was her USP! She never behaved the way we expected her to ....I've gotten used to this - a little now!

I greeted her "Happy Ugadi Guruji".  Even without turning her head, she replied "May it be a new beginning in you."  It was a little unusual greeting and I kep silent for sometime.

Then, when she had completed watering the plants and sat down (yes, in the mud - should I add - as ever!), I raised may question.  "Why it be a new beginning in you?"

She said "I knew when you greeted me, it was full of excitement that was filled with formality - but the soul was missing .  So, I blessed you so!".

Seeing my confused look, she continued - "most of us look and live our festivals only physically.  That is we wear new clothes, cook few extra and special dishes, go to temple - maybe and that's it! It's more ritualistic  and yet we think, we have actually made good use of the day.  I am not saying it should not be so!

But, going through festival days in this mundane ritualistic way is so limiting and that to me is robotic too!  In the process, the purpose is lost."

"What then could be the purpose of Ugadi?" I asked perplexed....
