Jabala – Me, My Guru
Jabala – Me, My Guru
“You already
know about Brahman, why did you come to me then?” asked Gautama. To which
Satyakama replied “All that is taught is taught by you ONLY through them. I seek
to hear all from you personally. Please teach me!”.
He was not arrogant saying “I have become worthy enough to learn from Nature on my own”.
He didn’t become arrogant with pride. His faith was beyond doubt that his Guru was capable of teaching him from any and every quarter. His belief and humility made him worthy of receiving what he received from Sage Gautama then and after. He was given knowledge of Brahman – the highest of knowledge – knowing which one needs to know nothing else!
Then under his Guru’s guidance he went on to graduate to a level of Sage Jabala who wrote Jabala Upanishad – first of it’s kind that explained the norms, rituals and everything of sanyashramam (monistic life)”.
She left us to attend a call. We discussed among ourselves about Jabala and the qualities of a student. Usually we gossiped about our lives and exchanged details about our personal lives. But years of company with Rahul and others who would taunt us saying “You come here to learn something not to expand your HR contacts/skills. Why can’t you stop doing that? Why waste time exchanging notes on your personal life and phone no? We come here to ‘let go’ and yet practice only ‘collecting all non-sense data’ again and again. Stop wanting to know what others’ caste is, marital status is, job profile and especially phone number. The less data you carry of other better for you”.
