Me, my Guru – on Valuing and gratitude

15 Inspiring Quotes About Giving | SUCCESS

Couple of years later a rich man in silk robes and couple of servants came seeking Master’s blessings. That day Master was sleeping under the peepul tree. Ananda took the rich man near the Master. Master with eyes closed asked ‘So, Dasu, are you content in life?’

The rich man with eyes filled with tears fell on his feet and said “oh, Master! How much I missed you!’

Ananda was taken aback. He couldn’t and hadn’t recognized Nirmaldas. But his Master recognized him even with his eyes closed.

Nirmaldas filled the Master with his life’s details as his Master sat up to listen to him.
He had shifted his business to the city and was doing very well there. His children too were growing up in right way. After having spent his time with his Master, Nirmaldas with folded arms pleaded ‘Master, please accept my token of gratitude’. Master nodded his head in affirmation and turned to Ananda ‘go and accept whatever he gives’.

Ananda was curious to see what Nirmaldas has brought this time. Nirmaldas asked his servants to go and fetch the ‘dakshina’ (offering) to his Master. They went and came back with a huge casket larger than a coffin. Four more servants were carrying it. It seemed heavy. It was placed in front of Master and servants went to stand at the gate of the ashram. Nirmaldas opened the casket. It was filled with money of various denominations, silver coins and receipts of groceries. Ashramites could go and get groceries in exchange for those receipts from the local shop. Ananda was dumb stuck. His eyes calculated and roughly the offering was enough to last few years. He was more than relieved. Now no monk need study and meditate on empty stomach for years to come. As a preceptor it tore his heart and his Master’s to see their students do the chores of the ashram on empty stomachs. Now it was not to be so for many years to come. Ananda made arrangements for the safe-keeping of all the funds etc on the clue received from Master.

Nirmaldas sat at his Master’s feet for some time.

Pointers :
  • What actually is happening here that the simple villager grows in wealth and material abundance?
  • What is his attitude even after he becomes rich?
  • The 'outer' may change with time, wealth and power. People who know you with your clothes wouldn't recognise you when you change your attire. But a person who 'knows' you for who you are recognises you even with eyes closed.
  • A Guru is one who knows you even when you hide it from yourself!
Ask yourself this question :

What and how do I consider my 'giving' to my family? Am I expecting in return something?
If you expect something in return it is business, not giving or love.
Work on your definitions.
Look honestly into your relationships, your expectations from them and WHAT YOU ARE GIVING INTO IT!
The answer to your happiness 'lies in your HONEST answer' to these questions.....
