Desire and it's effect

…contd…..

“Where did your wife and her SIL come from?” she asked turning to both of them.  You wanted to ‘get’ married’ and that is the desire that gave birth to this situation.  And so, your desire is the basis of your pain.  That is, you ‘wanted to be married’ and that desire gave you a ‘wife’ and ‘SIL’ and she not living up to your expectation is the by-product of your basic desire.  That way, you are responsible for your pain.

Like-wise a colleague who is bad, mean and heavy workload, no free-time is a by-product of the desire of wanting a job.

‘But, how can one live without having any desires?’ enquired Priya.

Yes, she was clearly agitated and irritated.  But that didn’t deter my Guru from answering ‘again, you are getting it wrong’. ‘HE’ created the world because ‘HE’ ‘desired’. So, desire is the basis of creation and any other creation too! It is imperative for the world’s existence and continuation.  That’s not the problem.  The problem doesn’t start when ‘the desire’ is felt – it exists ‘from where the desire starts’.

We didn’t understand.  It looked Greek and Latin to us and I think our faces reflected that very clearly.

So, she smiled and continued ‘O.k. I’ll explain.  Desire by itself is not ‘good’ or ‘bad’.  ‘why you desire’ is actually the deciding factor of fruits of desire.  Say, for eg. Wanting a job is not a problem.  Why you want a job –well, that’s important and that decides the end result of your desire – pain or pleasure!
