Guru and shishya

Guru and shishya

If the person is 'Guru' in real sense then unless in rare cases* never gets angry with his shishya. Not because he is bound by any rule or he is not supposed not to, but because his love for his shishya wouldn't let him to.

Know this and understand this correctly. He can get angry and be angry with shishya but he wouldn't.

But he can get disappointed in his shishya. And the day that happens, no fall is greater than that for any 'shishya'. A mere sorry is not going to right this wrong!

Shishya SHOULDN'T  be angry at his Guru and yet he DOES!

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Contd....

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Pointers to understand this post:

“And yet, in spite of being at such close quarters to Mahadev, Ravana didn’t overcome his weakness for women. His ego was his weakness. He didn’t work on it. Arrogance was the attitude that brought about his downfall.” – A person can be highly knowledgeable, powerful, ritualistic, close to the people in high places and power, could have all the riches of the World and yet, if his acts are immoral, his end is imminent. He has to bear the fruits of his evil acts (karma). There is no escape from that!

““If the Bhaktha looks at me with total devotion and thinks of nothing but me, then I’ll take care of all his needs of this world and the other too” – Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita.” – Things of this World are required to survive in this World but always remember – “Man doesn’t survive by bread alone”. Jaako rake saiyaaan maar sake na koye – No one can touch the person who is protected by the Divine!

Seek the Divine and all the protection and needs will be yours for asking!

The only thing that is permanent is the love and grace of the Divine! Work for that. Seek that! Long for that!

“This job was also done lovingly by our student Gautama. On the day of graduation, Guru permitted all to leave except Gautama. He didn’t flinch – he didn’t cry, feel miserable ro was angry. He resumed his studies. He continued doing the of the Ashram too.” Doing SEVA to Guru doesn’t mean you become entitled to demand things from him. You are doing seva because it is part and parcel of shishya’s life and sadhan.

When Gautama’s Guru didn’t allow him to graduate, he didn’t flinch. That is the mark of a shishya. One who is just a student will call his Guru names for not giving him graduation /certificate. A student will demand an explanation from his guru. And that’s why he never has a Guru in his life! But, by having a quality of surrendering, humility, unflinching trust and egolessness, an ordinary student becomes eligible to be a “shishya” and thereby receives Guru in his life!

Read the above explanation 10-20 times till you understand this! Most of your questions will be answered. But of course, only those who have set their ego aside can understand, others will THINK  they have and they wouldn’t!

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Guru smiled with pain and replied “I am not letting him go because he is so good – both in studies and as a person. I can’t imagine living without him. So, I couldn’t let him go. But, as you pointed out, I need to suffer his separation and let him go. Go send for Gautama. I will relieve him today”.

Gautama came and stood before his Guru with folded hands. He was 70 years 70-year-old man standing in front of his Guru. Guru’s eyes teared up seeing his beloved shishya. He said “You are to pass out with other students today. You’ll leave the ashram today. Go collect your belongings.”

Gautama bowed to his Guru and turned to leave. His guru stopped him and asked, “Don’t you want to know why I took so long to let you go?”

Gautama replied with folded hands and head bent “You must be having a valid reason”.

Guru’s eyes were filled with tears of joy. He was filled with love for his shishya. He hugged his dearest Shishya tightly and said “I bless you to regain your youth. I also give my 16-year-old daughter’s hand in marriage to you. You’ll leave the ashram as the youth. Go lead a life worthy of yourself”.

Gautama was just as young as his friends were when they left the ashram. He went on to become a great teacher. His ashram became very famous and many pupils passed out of his ashram.

Me My Guru – on fate, destiny and karma

Me My Guru – on fate, destiny and karma

“A Guru and his shishya lived on a mountaintop for many years. Shishya had worked on his vasanas under his Guru’s guidance and brought them under control. His bhakthi, faith, gratitude, respect and love for his Guru were obvious in his every act of “seva” to his Guru.

Years passed. Guru and shishya would be in sadhan all through the day and night too! Time was not taken into consideration by them.

Once during the meditations, Guru saw the death of his shishya in 7 days. He was shaken a bit. He meditated and regained his calm. He sat contemplating his vision. He called his shishya and said, “Son, since its years that you’ve been away from your family, I permit you to go visit them. Stay with them for a week. You can resume your studies with me when you come back after a week.”

Shishya was overjoyed. Without questioning further he packed his meagre belongings and left towards his home. As he got down the hill, he saw a bird hurt and lying on the ground. His eyes were filled with tears. His heart filled with compassion he nursed the bird and saved it. He felt very happy when he saw the bird fly away.

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Pointers to understand this post:

“As our Guru concluded her explanation, she just closed her eyes and went into meditation. We followed her example. We didn’t look at our watches. We lost count of time. And yet, we felt young, fresh, pure and clearer as we opened our eyes. This was the greatest day in terms of experience. We left contented!” – People many times only argue, discuss, or want to understand things of this World and the spiritual knowledge too with their Master. They try to understand all this with logic. When in actuality all this can be understood only intuitively. And for that, the best way is to sit in meditation with your Master. The healing that happens, the understanding that comes, the happiness that you experiences and the experience that you have is something that can’t be understood by mere words and in class while talking!

Blessed are those who are sensible to simply sit in meditation with their Masters! For they gain more than all the other people gain by attending all the lectures of the same Master!

Guru

...contd...

Am I not a student the moment I am seeking a Guru?

No.  Whenever we 'seek' Guru, we've an attitude that I am accepting someone as a Guru.  Isn't it?  Now, answer a simple question.  Who is at the higher pedestal vis-a-vis Guru-Shishya?
Guru or shishya?
Guru. Right? If it is so, how can shishya who is by default at a lower pedestal accept Guru at a higher pedastal.  He can never.  (This may apply for pseudo-master but Not the Actual Guru!).  It's always Guru who accepts his shishya.  The discretionary power rests entirely on him and him alone.

He, only out of love and grace can accept his disciple!

If, as a shishya I can't select my Guru then what is this 'student quality' that I should have? And Why?

True! It's Guru who selects but for him to select I should be having the 'essential' - I repeat ESSENTIAL qualities of egolessness, purity of intent, Trust, surrenderance and humbel enough to learn and above all accept that "I don't know" and be open to learning!.

How can these qualities protect against 'false gurus?'

Learning is of two types 1.How to be and 2. How not to be.

All the above varieties of so-called Gurus will show you how not to be.  Then you can learn and benefit from every person in your life.  Every person becomes your Guru.  Few things that we can learn from the 'wrong ones' can give us insight and understanding of 'learning technique'.

The first type is deceptive ones.  Agreed they are parroting, but we can follow their statements and apply them and benefit from them.  They may ask to get up at 'Brahma Muhurtam'  i.e., from 3 am - 5 am and do reiki, yoga, meditation when they themselves maynot follow.  That shouldn't trouble us.  we can get up and practice reiki at that time.  Your growth is for sure!

They only talk about forgiveness and yet not follow it!  Cool.  You apply it and become free from hatred.

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Contd....

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Pointers to understand this post:

“As I entered the class which was in progress, I found everyone engrossed in the story that was being told by our Guru. I just joined them. And in no time found myself lost in the explanation.” – All that the narrator did was be with the flow and he became one with it!

Similarly, in life, you BECOME what you identify with! We need not do much!

We need not make an effort! We just have to choose – right one! And lo! We become one with our choice. It can be “become one with your Guru, Isht Daiv (God in your favourite form and name) or an Ideal! Just identify yourself with one and you become It!

Ranjha ranjha karthi maitho Ranjhe jaisi ho gayee….

“He was ‘araadhya’ (one worthy of worship and love) of one and all! He was the easiest of all Gods to please. He was God of Gods and yet simple acts of worship pleased him. He was simplicity personified.” – The higher the person grows, the simpler are ways to please him! Because Mahadev is the highest, he is the easiest to please!

If you want to grow to be powerful, then develop this quality – simplicity! Keep vanity away from you. Keep pride away from you. And lo! You become great!

On choosing a master!

On choosing a master and being a 'shishya'

When you come before spiritual Guru get ready to get chastised.

Guru's role is just that. If you wish to be his 'shishya' be ready to be chastised. 'Shishya' means one who is chastised or ready to be chastised.

If you want to be someone's 'shishya' and are not ready to follow blindly what they say, then you don't become their 'shishya' inspite of being one in letter. I would rather you remain away from the person whom you feel you can't trust without questioning and following blindly.

If a master has a rule a student can't be a student and yet question it. Decide if you want to be 'his student' or someone else. Because as a student you automatically lose the right to question your master....

If you can't believe the 'intention' of the master you seek to follow or be guided by, be away from such master.

If you think you know more than the master, then be away from 'such master'.

If the 'integrity of master's character' is doubtful in your eyes, then shy away from him.

When you go to a master, you are going with a belief that he is capable of helping you see yourself for who you are! It is your duty to bring your 'trust' on him with you. It is not his job to convince you to follow him.

He doesn't need you - remember that!

YOU need him..

If your master needs you, then pity on you for choosing such a master....if your master is desperate to hold on to you or see that he doesn't lose you - even God can't save you from such a choice that you have made ..........

On Guru

Me, My Guru on Guru, Shishya

She was in a hurry to leave but we still asked her a question “Can you tell us about Guru and Shishya? Can you explain what this relationship is all about?”

And she replied packing her bags “Shishya is a ‘question mark’ whereas Guru is an exclamation mark. Shishya is all about how, why, when of question. Guru is the ‘wow’ in the answer!”

So saying, she opened her car and left.

And Rahul added behind her “Confusion, doubts, questions and lack of understanding is Shishya.

Clarity of thought, calmness, purity and answer is Guru”.

We clapped!

Sometimes, the answer to the most ‘sought out questions’ is very simple!

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Contd....

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Pointers to understand this post:

“Year after year, batch after batch would come and leave. And still, his Guru never permitted him to leave. He was 70 years old now. Guru’s wife felt very bad for Gautama who was such a good student and person who had served so long without complaining even once.” – How much is your trust in your Guru decides if you are eligible for his Grace!

One who is competing with his master can never wait! He demands that he be given Mastership/Grandmastership. That reflects the shallowness of their character. And that by itself is the attitude that negates the certificate that they hold. Alas! People can’t see or understand this simple truth!

“Gautama bowed to his Guru and turned to leave. His guru stopped him and asked, “Don’t you want to know why I took so long to let you go?”

Gautama replied with folded hands and head bent “You must be having a valid reason”.” – Only the pure in heart can trust. Only the pure in heart can not ASSUME that his master is not letting him go because his master is afraid that his student will progress! Purity of heart is the pre-requisite for any spiritual growth! And that is the most difficult one to achieve.

“On the other hand, Gautama didn’t do any penance like Ravana, just Guru seva all the years, and still, not only did he get his material needs fulfilled but also his guru’s blessings and love – which is priceless.” – One who serves his Guru/parent/ others/God/Nation selflessly and with humility even without effort gains the purity of heart. And that by itself, raises his qualification to receive every grace of this World and other. That itself becomes the “sree rama raksha” for that person.

Grace and blessings can’t be demanded.

Grace and blessings can’t be begged for.

Grace and blessings can’t be received by manipulation. If it is received by manipulation, even then it doesn’t come to our aid or benefit us in any way.

The end doesn’t justify the means!

His eyes were filled with tears. His heart filled with compassion he nursed the bird and saved it. He felt very happy when he saw the bird fly away.

As he continued his journey, he saw a wounded rabbit. He again waited to nurse the rabbit. The rabbit was saved. He resumed his journey happily now.

His family was happy to see him after such a long time. He spent goodtime with family and friends. Every day, he fed some ants before eating. One week later he took leave of his family and started his journey back to his Guru’s place. Just a thought of being with his Guru soon sent shivers of happiness in his body. His body felt light. He was light on his feet too as he made in return journey.

His Guru saw him climbing the hill from atop. His surprise and joy knew no bounds. He came running to meet his shishya. He hugged him and gave him fruits to eat.

When they both reached their place Guru asked how his journey and stay were. The shishya narrated every incident of his journey and stay. When the shishya shared his joy of seeing rabbit and the bird saved, the Guru realized the Divine Grace and the Law of Karma more clearly.

Me, My Guru – Hiss, but don’t bite

 Contd....

Me, My Guru – Hiss, but don’t bite

Pointers to understand this post:

“Our Guru entered, sat in her seat and went into meditation. A few minutes later, she opened her eyes and said “In a certain village Buddha gave his discourse for a fortnight.” – so many times this has been expressed by the Guru. She sits in meditation whenever there is commotion. She is living what she preaches. She is showing us that in meditation we will find our answers. And yet….

“One cobra, a snake was also listening to this discourse daily. On the final day as Buddha was leaving the village, this cobra came to meet Buddha. It bowed to Buddha and said “Master, I’ve been listening to your discourse every single day. I am impressed. I wish to walk the path towards Enlightenment. Please accept me as your shishya”.” – Even a poisonous snake as Cobra understood what Buddha was telling. We as humans just find excuses or ways to argue how we can’t follow being non-violent.

“Buddha looking at the very huge, fat cobra willing to walk this path smiled and said “So be it!”” – If the shishya is genuine about his transformation then every Guru will accept him as his shishya – if is the condition here!

I don’t see people coming to me to change. They come to argue how they are right and how others in their life are wrong. The quality that that cobra had is a pre-requisite to be a shishya. The day you work on that, your Guru will come in your life.

Me My Guru – on fate, destiny and karma

Contd....

Me My Guru – on fate, destiny and karma

When they both reached their place Guru asked how his journey and stay were. The shishya narrated every incident of his journey and stay. When the shishya shared his joy of seeing rabbit and the bird saved, the Guru realized the Divine Grace and the Law of Karma more clearly.

Guru realized:

Our future is fluid. It is not certain. It can be changed with our attitude, karma, small acts of kindness and sadhan.

Any small act of kindness was applauded and appreciated by the Divine and the one who performed them was blessed accordingly!

But our acts can’t be orchestrated. They have to be spontaneous, pure and out of love to give a positive result.

He shared his vision and understanding with his shishya.

Shishya’s eyes were filled with gratitude and love for Guru. His Shraddha grew more and his sadhan became more intense. Soon, he became Enlightened!

So you see do all the good you can, at all the times you can and to all the people you can.

No good deed ever goes to waste! We never know how our good deeds come back to support or help us in our tough times” our Guru concluded this story with a smile that meant more than what we could decipher.

But we had this story to understand first.

So many of our questions were answered.

We got the “solution” to our problems and a way out of our “fearful situations” – but unfortunately it was left to us to put this to good use to see its benefit. That was the part we didn’t like. Why were we to do all the doing? Couldn’t our Guru just give our bounties to us just like that?

With no one to answer that question of ours, we left her place with mixed feelings. Today we received a lot!

And yet, we found ourselves empty!
