On knowing self - Me, My Guru

On knowing self - Me, My Guru

...Contd.......

We were silent for a while. Shreya seemed to be going through our Guru’s explanation mentally. Few minutes later she said “Actually Guru my pain is not because of these reasons. I’ve healed these many times and now these reasons don’t seem to effect me much. What confuses me and irritates me is the fact that I know I am not selfish and yet seem to be affected by those labels. I am also confused if what I think about myself is different from what I actually am. Maybe, I am not able to see my ‘real nature’ myself! How do I work on that?” she asked.

I felt so relieved when I heard those words. I had this issue since long but wasn’t able to word it right. She was almost there. I wouldn’t say 100% but mostly there. Now I waited for the answer.

“Stop defending yourself and stop explaining yourself. We defend ‘ferociously’ people whom we love and ourselves. Stop doing that. Suppose someone says “your children fight a lot” don’t jump to explain how sweet your kids are, how they love each other etc. That moment they are fighting, let it be. Don’t work ‘hard’ to establish ‘their image’. It’s a very painful process. The same applies to self too. If someone says “God, you look fat” don’t explain your diet chart, workout schedule etc to them. Don’t ‘justify’ how you look or what you are. You consider yourself thin in relation to last month but they must have seen you after 10 years so let it be. Everything is relative in this world. So relax, smile and move on. Don’t explain or justify yourself or your actions.

That doesn’t mean you stop explaining why you went out and why you came late or spent so much to a family member. Don’t mix up issues. Don’t use my ‘correct rules’ in wrong places to get away with your wrong acts and intentions” her voice had authority as she concluded.

This was always the case. Many of us used her ‘right tip’ in wrong places and then quoted her while doing that. She really got angry at times.

Then she went to explain the same giving various examples and situations, but I didn’t need to listen to any of it. I got the gist of it all “Stop defending and explaining yourself” simple! As I understood when I later discussed with others was not only was this to be done externally but also internally. Yes, in the ‘inner chatter’ that we had too, we should stop ‘justifying ourselves’. This actually brought down the quantity of clutter talk. Such simple technique and yet such powerful results!

I was happy and so did others seem to be! I didn’t need much by way of explanation this time. If others who applied vouched by this technique, then all I had to do was apply it and see.

It wasn’t something that I could do on my own. I needed situations and people to apply it. Now I looked forward to face such situations so that I could apply it and see the results. It would take atleast 3-4 months for me to notice some change. I was ready to wait. I was excited to apply too!

With meditations and healing myself all these years I have come to know and understand others well..but it was myself that I was falling short of understanding or knowing completely...I didn't know where and how to start and go about it...."Stop labelling and defending yourself and stop justifying yourself" made it seem so simple. I could already see it's effect on myself and my state of being. The rest fell in place automatically. Though the technique was simple its' application would take a good toll on my patience and I knew it with experience. It would take time but where was the hurry as long as I knew where I was heading and how to go about it.....

Rest of the session was just a haze for me. I received what I needed. I felt rich and left her place feeling so............

Sometimes I received solutions which didn't give me immediate proof of their effect but over the years I had developed that trust in her and her techniques that I knew I received what I needed....I had applied her various and seen results and found them effective - always....and knew somewhere deep down that this too would show results....I still couldn't see and understand how this would solve my issue or address my state of being but it no longer mattered. I was ready enough to go with the technique and learn along the way...a smile played on my lips and I felt lightness in my steps.....

Me, my guru – on knowing self and mind training!

Me, my guru – on knowing self and mind training!

“Guruji, why do you insist on ‘knowing self’ when we are healing ourselves? Is not healing enough? We are good with the results we get with our healings. Why should we look within and know ourselves?” asked Vaishnav.

“First tell me, why not? Why don’t you want to know yourself? What exactly is your problem in knowing self?” asked our Guru with a smile.

“Because it hurts! It is painful when I meditate and look within. I don’t want to suffer this now. I just want to enjoy life. Just tell me ways to get my desires (which are very basic and normal for me!) fulfilled” retorted Vaishnav.

Many of us felt his rage and anger. We suffered his way of thinking and supported his line of thought in this area. He was right. We hated to look at ourselves closely. It hurt us a lot. It disturbed us. We suffered. And we felt we had the right to learn at our own pace. We didn’t have to learn it now. We chose not to put ourselves through this suffering. How in hell were we wrong?

“all the answers are in your question itself!” said our Guru. “Does looking at yourself in the mirror hurt? No! then why when you look within? If you yourself are not comfortable looking at yourself, how can you expect to like yourself or love yourself? And

Unless you like/love yourself how can you expect any other person in the world to like/love you?

If we do not know the climatic conditions of a country, how will we know what and when to wear? How will you judge the right time to plant flowers?

Me, My Guru – Virochana and Indra

 Contd.....

Me, My Guru – Virochana and Indra

He respected his Guru’s discretion in teaching. He didn’t see it as wrong and called it as his Guru trying to withhold Knowledge at every step. He didn’t blame his Guru as being egoistic, manipulative and demanding with his students. His humility (real one, not the pretended humility as many) was the essential quality that made him eligible to come for the next level of learning.

Indra had gratitude. Respect is imperative in gratitude. Loose talking and then covering it with statements like “Oh, did I say so, I don’t remember” or “I didn’t mean to insult you but, maybe because I don’t know how to express right or I am not as good as you in giving justifications, maybe it came out wrong. But, I know I was not wrong, but still forgive me if you think I am wrong because I don’t want your anger to stop me from having my desire fulfilled”.

Such talks and mentality reveal the person’s level of consciousness – that of body conscious and so asuric in nature. It reflects Virochana’s belief that things in this world mean everything. Such people want instant gratification of their desires. And when there is a delay, it is expressed as anger. They feel entitled to receive the fulfillment of their desires.

Indra worked to know the “self”. He was ready to wait ‘to learn about Self” which was desire. To work for, to wait for the fulfillment of one’s desire, to sacrifice, time, joys and pleasures of one’s life is an essential quality of Daivic nature.

In contrast, Virochana was not only pleased with the answer but also went to taint others with his limited and crooked understanding. The entire tribe lived with that ‘limited understanding’ and suffered the pangs of greed, selfishness, jealousy, lust, impatience and arrogance. People who want to become masters at the earliest leading others with ignorance come under this category.

Like a fly that gets attracted to the lamp to meet its end, students whose karma is destined towards their annihilation get attracted towards such masters. https://kantipadam.blogspot.com/2019/01/on-dependence.html

Pointers to understand this post:

" He didn’t blame his Guru as being egoistic, manipulative and demanding with his students. His humility (real one, not the pretended humility as many) was the essential quality that made him eligible to come for the next level of learning. " - How can you learn right and in full if you have complaints and anger for the person from whom you need to learn?

If you think any person is jealous of you and is stopping your growth, trust me, leave that person!

If you are right, he is not someone who can benefit you!

If it is your assumption based on your jealousy and anger, then you will not be able to learn anything from him!

Either way, you will not learn from him!

Go elsewhere to learn!!!

The essential quality to learn and grow spiritually is trust in your master/Guru and belief he has your best interest in mind!

" Indra had gratitude. Respect is imperative in gratitude. Loose talking and then covering it with statements like ..." - RESPECT is the basis of gratitude. Talking loosely about the other's intention both in person or behind him states that we don't have belief in him and we don't respect him. There gratitude is just a word!

" Indra worked to know the “self”. He was ready to wait ‘to learn about Self” which was desire. To work for, to wait for the fulfillment of one’s desire, to sacrifice, time, joys and pleasures of one’s life is an essential quality of Daivic nature. " -  Guru knows more than you!

If the Guru thinks you don't deserve something NOW, then you need to accept that!

Wait and be in sadhan!

If and when you become eligible, your Guru will give what you deserve, not when you demand it!

" In contrast, Virochana was not only pleased with the answer but also went to taint others with his limited and crooked understanding. The entire tribe lived with that ‘limited understanding’ and suffered the pangs of greed, selfishness, jealousy, lust, impatience and arrogance. " - Spirituality has become the most 'becoming commodity' in this yuga!

Thanks to Kali, every person charades as a Guru!

Everyone wants to be a Guru!

Everyone wants respect that comes with being Guru!

And therein lies the cause of their 'soul's downfall'. Don't fall for it! Beware of it!

Guru or master is one who bears the fruits (in exponential way) of the wrongs committed by his students too, not to talk about his own flaws and wrongs!

Any wrong that he teaches falls into his 'karma account'. Be aware of that!

This is no jaywalk!

This is not the path for everyone!

Work on self only till the right time comes!

Don't burden yourself with extra baggage of this karma too!

On knowing self -Me, My Guru

On knowing self -Me, My Guru

Contd.....

A man filled with lust sees object of his desire everywhere and a Buddha sees Buddha in everyone!

And hence Ravana saw ‘object of desire’ in Mother Sita. The fault was not in Sita ma. It was in his eyes and character. Like-wise, Buddha saw ‘a divine soul’ in a highway dacoit – Angulimaan who went on to become one of his best and Enlightened disciples. A sadhak can get ‘message from his Guru/divine’ even from a film. I experienced it. We just had to be tuned to our Guru’s vibrations and they have their own way to reach and teach us. This I call as ‘play way of method’ of her teaching.

In similar situations, I had pitied her so many times for patiently teaching us and coaxing us to understand ‘the teachings’. Not this time! I didn’t pity her. Neither was I angry with self. I felt gratitude for all the love that our Guru exhibited through her teachings. Yes love found its expression through minute excuses. And what did I give in return - A bland and a routine ‘thankyou maam’ which sounded more mechanical than genuine now even to my ears. I had to live her words. I had to ‘let go’ off my causes of pain by simply applying her time tested techniques. I by living a life of abundance gave her one of the best gifts.

She said ‘don’t argue, defend or justify’. Now I saw it. We didn’t
let go because we had our reasons to hold on to our hurts. Yes, the other did hurt and insult us. They don’t understand us. We justify our emotions of pain, hurt by their actions. It wasnt’ as if ‘she didn’t understand’. She did and hence gave this simple technique “don’t justify or defend’. If I didn’t justify my emotions then the talk of him (the one who hurt) didn’t arise and then how could I go on in this ‘pain trip?”. She wanted just that. She wanted us to get down that train that took us to ‘hell of pain and suffering’. And all I need to do was ‘stop defending and justifying’.

Once this continuous chatter of others being wrong and us being right stops we are in a space of silence that reflects our Nature to us! That’s what was our question “how do I know and understand self?” she had bundled all our issues under one head and gave a simple panacea of tip “Stop defending and justifying” and thereby ‘letting go’ and automatically entering the ‘Me Zone’.

God – it was so obvious and yet I had wasted all these years. Even if I had simply followed her ‘do’s and don’ts’ it could’ve brought me here long back!

Well. Better late than never!

On knowing self - Me, My Guru

'‘Let go’ – This should be key word while I suffer. Period! No arguments, no ifs and no but’s!”

I felt the pain in my hand and realized I was still holding the empty tea cup. I put it down. The pain brought me to ‘NOW’! If an empty cup can give me ‘that pain’ how much more should carrying all those hurts, pain etc should be giving me?

Seven years back I had understood the importance of ‘let go’ and yet I was where I was. What is the benefit of understanding if I didn’t apply it in my life?

I hadn’t changed in all these years and ‘NO’ it isn’t good to remain so! Change is essential and symbol of life and growth. If I
had changed for better, then the luggage I was carrying of pain wouldn’t be there. Only if I ‘let go’ can I actually ‘move on’. I closed my eyes and took deep breath. Just couple of days ago she had said “Don’t justify, defend or explain your actions’. Then I didn’t get it. I was excited about applying little realizing its implication. Now I get it. She meant ‘Let go’’. When words and actions of our ‘so called’ near and dear ones hurt us, ‘let go’ off their words. No point holding on to their words which only drags us more deep into the pit of ‘hurt, pain and suffering’ and yes that was the death of our happiness, peace, sense of self-worth in short ourselves. What is it worthy of? However real and painful were the words and acts, to save self I had to ‘let go’ like that ‘grail’.

With eyes closed I went through the scene mentally. Our Guru had often said “Depending on our intent and desire we received what we were looking for from every nook and corner”.  Her one more famous quote was ‘You are what you read’. Today I saw that. How many of us connected films with spirituality? Certainly not me! And ‘she’ has taught me so beautifully through that English film.

It hurt more when the person was someone whom you counted as your own!

“What exactly is the cause of your pain?” our Guru asked.

“Sorry, we didn’t get your question” we said.

“What is the cause of your pain? Is it them calling you ‘selfish’ or you not being that or they misunderstanding you? Which one hurt you?” she asked.

We were confused. I mean “are they not related?”

“They all are inter-connected” said Shreya after a while.

“No, though they seem to” replied our Guru “See, if you are ‘selfish’ then it shouldn’t matter as they just said the Truth. If it is not so, then also it shouldn’t matter as it is not true. It just means they don’t understand you. That’s all! Here you don’t seem to be hurt by their misunderstanding instead you are hurt that you are labelled so. Am I right?”

We nodded our heads.

“Then my explanation is enough to make you see reason – right?” she asked.

“yes” said Shreya.

We were silent for a while. Shreya seemed to be going through our Guru’s explanation mentally. Few minutes later she said “Actually Guru my pain is not because of these reasons. My family’s call for lunch! I opened my eyes. Did I not just start to clean my desk? I looked at the watch. It was well past 1pm. I put back all those papers from where I took them. After lunch I had to have my afternoon siesta. On holidays if I was at home, well it was mandatory. So I was done for the day here! My family would make fun of me for being expert in not doing anything worth the name inspite of my ‘whole day’s plan’. This happened almost everytime. But then, how could I make them see what I had gained. I didn’t and couldn’t clear the clutter on my writing desk but my day wasn’t wasted. Infact it was more than useful, productive and well spent than they could understand I had expected. Yes, things didn’t go the way I had envisaged. But it went much better. ‘Whatever happens, happens for good’ was true here 100%. I had uncluttered my mental space. I found a path to walk, a technique which was easy and user-friendly by way of application. I mean, I could use it as I went along with my routine. I didn’t have to take time to practise. My ‘Karma bhoomi’ itself became a ‘Dhyaana bhoomi’. I could get – no be free through my work as I had to apply it during my work!!!

I smiled and thanked her for ‘making our journey’ so effortless and easy. And I got up to eat as I was very hungry – both for food and to put my knowledge into practise.......

On knowing self! Me, My Guru

On knowing self!

Me, My Guru

....contd......

Our Guru came and took her seat silently and went into meditation. We aped her. When we opened our eyes, actually I felt relieved of the knotty feeling I was carrying in my stomach since two days. I looked at others to notice ‘pleasant’ look on their faces too. She hadn’t talked. She didn’t explain anything. She hadn’t healed (or that’s what we thought!) and yet by simply closing our eyes and doing meditation we felt relieved of our burden. I had tried it at home for the past two days and without any benefit and now......Is this what is called ‘Guru’s effect’?

“You look a bit disturbed” our Guru asked Shreya directly without going through any pleasantries. She usually never went through the small talk. At first I used to think it was rude on her part but now I knew it to be different. She didn’t talk because it was expected of her as a formality. She used her voice only to explain or say something substantial. I never heard her say “Oh, isn’t it cute?”, “it’s so hot today, isn’t it?” or something as common as “so, how’s everything?”. There never were vague or unnecessary questions or statements made by her. Coming to think of it, it reduced so much of ‘waste talk’ (as I understand later!)

“One of my relative called me ‘selfish’ and you know I am not. It’s hurting me so much. I tried to explain but no one was listening. I feel so frustrated and angry. I mean, how can someone call me ‘selfish’? In so many years, is this what they have understood about me? Is this what they think of me?” blurted Shreya crying. It must’ve been very raw wound and it seemed to hurt her a lot. I could understand that. I was in her shoes since couple of days. Even I’ve been called ‘arrogant’ by someone close by me. It hurt. I mean we presume people whom we call family knows us but here these were the people who were assigning all these ‘wrong labels’ on us!

Me, My Guru – Virochana and Indra

 Contd.....

Me, My Guru – Virochana and Indra

In these years, Prajapathi taught them the importance of good health, wealth and waking consciousness (Jagrat Avastha)

At the end of 32 years, they took leave of their Guru and left towards their abode. When they crossed quite a distance, they took leave of each other to go their respective ways. It was then that Indra thought “This body is perishable. So this Knowledge of maintaining it cannot be ultimate. My Guru must’ve meant something else. I’ll go back and find it out!”. He turned around and returned to the Ashram.

Whereas Virochana looked at his reflection, recollected all his teachings and felt “This body is Ultimate!. So, beauty and importance of this body, abundance of wealth and power, gratification of physical senses through various pleasures is the Ultimate!”. This he taught to all his subjects – Asuras. They were very happy and lived based on these teachings. Even today, the majority lead their life around these teachings only! People who live and believe so to be the “Be All” are called “Asuras”. They lead an “asuric life”. They develop “asuric or demonic quality in themselves”.

On the other hand, Indra reached Ashram, explained his doubt to his Guru and sought an explanation. Prajapathi agreed to teach more but with the condition that Indra stays as a Brahmachari (Celibate student) with him for another 32 years. Indra agreed again. He stayed back.

" My Guru must’ve meant something else. I’ll go back and find it out!”. He turned around and returned to the Ashram " - The person who can realize that whatever he knows is not enough and he needs to seek further is the person who is destined to grow. His attitude is the reason he develops and becomes a 'deva'.

" This he taught to all his subjects – Asuras. " - One who thinks he is got ALL RIGHT is the one who is drunk with arrogance and his ego will never let him see through his ignorance. Having learnt wrong and limited, he will spread the same unto all he meets and teaches. That also becomes his karma. Everyone is in the hurry to become a master!
Their low self-esteem forces them to sit on the throne of mastership at the earliest. Unfortunately, that becomes the 'rod' that hits with karma in their life.

Me, My Guru – Virochana and Indra

 Contd.....

Me, My Guru – Virochana and Indra

On the other hand, Indra reached Ashram, explained his doubt to his Guru and sought an explanation. Prajapathi agreed to teach more but with the condition that Indra stays as a Brahmachari (Celibate student) with him for another 32 years. Indra agreed again. He stayed back.

He was taught about the dreaming Consciousness (Swapna Avastha).

Indra was impressed and left. But en route, he kept thinking about all that he learned. He realized the futility of dreaming consciousness too.

He returned.

He was asked to stay for 32 more years. He agreed. His teaching continued.

He was taught then about the deep-sleep state (Sisupta avastha).

Indra went with a tranquil heart and mind. Yet, in no time, he saw that even in this state he was not ‘aware of his Self’! He knew this was not IT!

He came back.

He begged to be taught about the Self. Prajapathi asked him to stay for 5 more years. Indra did. Before the end of 5 years, he was taught about the nature of the Soul which was beyond dualities. He taught about that State which was Ultimate – Turiya State in which the soul sees itself in its ‘own form through its own light’!

NOW, Indra knew “The Self”!

He left the ashram fully aware and endowed with complete and pure Knowledge. He taught the same to his subjects and they weaved their lives around this Truth. They became followers of “Light” and hence were called “Devas (light beings).

As their Knowledge was complete, they developed divine qualities of patience, humility, devotion, purity, truthfulness, ahimsa, selflessness, and faith in God. Their powers and respect increase over time among all beings. They earned it with their choices, awareness, and earnestness.

On the other hand, asuras believing just the body to be ultimate made choices around this Knowledge. Their decisions and choices ended up being wrong and were reflected as bad results for all involved.

Similarly, for people who want instant gratification and results are asuric in nature. By developing these qualities in us we develop ‘asura’ within us. We strengthen the ‘asura’ within us.

Pointers to understand post:

" He returned.......he saw that even in this state he was not ‘aware of his Self’! He knew this was not IT!

He came back. " - Indra kept coming back again and again. He did not mind losing so many of his years in just being with his Guru. He was REALLY  interested in knowing Self! Everyone just talks about soul and such stuff. NO one is actually interested. As long as the person is worldly bound, he is bound to suffer. And yet, no one has time to come out it - what an irony!

" On the other hand, asuras believing just the body to be ultimate made choices around this Knowledge. Their decisions and choices ended up being wrong and were reflected as bad results for all involved. " Everyone who believes and identifies with this body and name will suffer for sure. There is no escape from that. And to know 'self' we don't have time and interest. So, inspite of what we think of ourselves the way we lead our lives and make our choices reflect our asuric nature. And therein lies the cause of suffering!

Me, my guru – on knowing self and mind training!

Most of us would if we received such an answer in spite of our explanations. Why, even Vaishnav himself has expressed his anger on people who have talked back to him. Aren’t we all like him? We justified our anger but we expected our demands to be justified and were angry who didn’t support our point of view?

But all she did was “No! we don’t stop the medicine intake. We change our alcohol intake first. Then, we sit to see why we drink in the first place. And then address it. Then the need to drink is addressed, and we would take steps toward the right life-style habits. That would speed up the process of healing of that medicine.”

“But I didn’t understand Guruji” continued Vaishnav with stupidity written all over his face.

“Drunkard's n
eed to drink reflects why he is doing it, cause behind it, and way to heal it. Similarly, by knowing self we’ll know why we have an emotion say anger, jealousy, affection etc, and the cause behind it. Then we can strengthen our positive qualities and work on our weaknesses. But for that first, we should know what and why we feel, think and act in a certain way. If we don’t know why we do anything in a certain way, how can we see if we need to change it or not?”

We all needed time to process all this so we left for the day!

She went into meditation as ever!

Pointers to understand:

"“But I didn’t understand Guruji” continued Vaishnav with stupidity written all over his face. " - Read these lines again and again. Many of you must have recollected some character from your life who represents this Vaishnav! It is so easy to recollect that person's stupid statements and expressions - isn't it?

This is where the ego gives itself away! Here is our "judgemental nature" expressed! And we are not even aware of it!!! Why? Because we are so busy looking at the other's stupidity!!

My mom used to always say "Everyone can see others' back, but not his own". Remember that! It is so easy to look and comment on others' stupidity and weaknesses. But that is not going to benefit us one bit. So, instead let's look at ourselves when we point fingers at others! That way, we get to know ourselves.

And with that the areas to be healed and corrected in us!

This is just one of the ways you are supposed to look at these and such statements in these posts.....
