Sun God knew that being an asura and with such powerful boon Dambhodbhava was bound to cause havoc but with no other alternative, he fulfilled Dambhodbhava’s wish. Drunk with power as feared by Sun God Dambhodbhava caused terror in the world, devastating all that were good and pious.

 Lord Vishnu

 

Daksha Prajapathi’s one the daughter Murti wanted to put an end to this asura’s atrocities and did severe penance to please Lord Vishnu. When Lord Vishnu came to fulfill her wish she asked for the power to be given to vanquish the asura. Lord replied “I can’t directly grant you that wish and my desire too is the same and hence will be born as your twin sons – Nara and Narayana who will vanquish that Asura and you thus will be instrumental in ending his life”. She accepted pleased with the boon. She was blessed with Nara and Narayana who were two but were one soul in two bodies. 

 

So Narayana went into forest to do intense tapas when Nara went to fight Dambhodbhava. 

 

Dambhodbhava laughed at young youth who was just a human being who had come to challenge him. But he couldn’t not accept Nara’s challenge for a duel and found that Narayana’s tapas shakthi (power of penance) was indeed being transferred to Nara and hence he even succeeded in breaking his armour. And as per the boon he fell dead immediately. Asura laughed to his heart’s content but was very soon surprised to see Nara running towards him. It took sometime to realize that it was not Nara but Narayana that Nara was talking about who was running towards him. He ridiculed Narayana for having a brother so stupid who wanted to die to break just one of his armour. Narayana simply sat beside him and revived him with his mantra shakthi and Nara went into penance and Narayana continued fight with Dambhodbhava who was also called as Sahasrakavacha (man with 1000 armours). This continued fill both brothers alternatively broke 999 armour.
