Me, My Guru
Contd....
3. He sent her
away as he wanted to please others and get a ‘good name’.
Wrong as his
other act contradicts this statement. If it was to please others, he would have
taken second wife and no one would’ve questioned him. But he had principles and
in the times when people or men taking more wives was a norm he having given
his word to Sita at the time of their marriage, that he would be ‘ekpatnivrata’
– one woman man was a big thing. And he never used any excuse to remarry. That
talks about his character. It also proves that he didn’t do things to please
others. He didn’t bend the rules or principles to his convenience.
4. He doubted
Sita’s character:
Wrong again as he never doubted her. But he couldn’t let his conviction
be forced on others’ doubts. So, he had to leave her.
5. He asked her
to give agnipariksha (prove her purity by entering the fire) : When Sita is
brought to Rama after the war is over by Vibhishina with due respects, Rama
says “I have fulfilled my duty of protecting you and freeing you from the
Ravana’s abduction. Now you are free to choose and take any able prince as your
husband. I free you from this bondage”.
He never asks
her to give ‘Agnipariksha’. Sita understanding his dilemma and his incapacity
to take her in decides to immolate herself instead of choosing someone else as
her husband and asks Lakshmana to light a pyre and jumps into it. Then the Agni
Deva, the God of fire and various Gods come to vouch for her purity and seek
Rama to take her as his wife. Then Rama replies that he never even for a moment
doubted her but he wanted the world to know the greatness of Sita, so he had to
treat her harshly.
