He knew had to come to vanquish all that was ‘adharmic (unrighteous) and protect ‘dharmic’. He had to uphold “Dharm”. That meant – there was no scope for favourtism, partiality or favourite kith and kin too! He saw “Yadavas” (the clan of Krishna was called Yadavas) drunk with all that was wrong. He knew that had to go!

And two people’s wrath came to his aid in this regard. One was that of Sage who cursed Yadavas to be annihilated and the other was the curse of Queen Gandhari that the Clan of Krishna be wiped out.

Some sages were performing yagna in the forest. Some young Yadavas who were in the forest desired to have fun at the cost of the great sages. One of the Yadava boys dressed as a girl and the other acted as that ‘girl’s husband’. Together they approached the sages and asked them “Sir, my wife is pregnant. Please tell her whether she will bear a son or a daughter?”

Sages seeing beyond their pretense grew furious and blessed “She will give birth to a club that will bring death to your entire clan”. Terrified of the curse they fled the place. But the damage was done. They shared this terrible curse with the elders of their Clan. The elders crushed the club into 1000 pieces and ordered them to be thrown into the Great Sea. One big lump was swallowed by a fish that was caught by one fisherman and he made an arrow with that lump. This was the same arrow that was hit by the hunter that killed Lord Krishna. The pieces were washed ashore and they implanted themselves and grew as tall sharp cane plants. 

A few years rolled by.

After the war of Kurukshetra, the Yadavas were left out of annihilation. Lord Krishna knew even they had to be erased from Earth for the New beginning of Kali Yuga to start with a fresh set of people who were just and dharmic. One day, in the drunken state the Yadavas ended up fighting among themselves and they took tall sharp cane plants (that had grown as a result of the curse of the Sage) and killed each other. These plants were so sharp that they were more lethal than any weapon of war.

So, coming to Krishna’s curse – our Lord accepted it. he used it to annihilate the ‘adharm’ that had gone beyond the ‘corrective measure’ limit. This way, Yadavas brought about their complete annihilation. There was a huge flood  - a la’ tsunami that submerged Dwaraka and all its inhabitants. Both the curses were put to good use!

So you see, when a curse comes upon a wrongdoer it brings his downfall. He pains him and he suffers.

Whereas, when ‘the right’ is cursed (Lord Krishna in this case) it is turned to put the Divine plan in motion.

Lord himself gave shape to the idea and growth of Dwaraka. Yet, when the time came, HE let it be destructed for the larger good!

Similarly, we can only plan for creative, productive and constructive tomorrows. We can work for the same too! But, we can NEVER decide the course it takes in the future. Do your duty. But, don’t be bent on the way it shapes up tomorrow. Be it your child, family, relationships, career or anything.

Be right. Give your best shot – only that is within our reach. Nothing more! The rest depends on the children’s attitudes and destiny. Don’t assume you can control it. Teach them right. But to walk on it is their choice. You can’t do anything there. Be detached on that!”

Having said this, our Guru just closed her eyes and sat down for sometime. Sometime later, she just got up and left.

Today, we didn’t open our mouths. We didn’t question her.

She came, talked, taught and left.

We came, sat, listened and received answers to questions unasked and left!

We didn’t know who was luckier – us or her??!!

In the second instance, after the war, Krishna along with Pandavas arrived at Hastinapur. All the sons of Dhritarashtra and dKunti were killed in the war. Gandhari mother of 100 was left childless. In that fit of pain and rage, she cursed Krishna “You are considered God. If it is true, then you would’ve known the outcome of this war. And yet, you let it start and then go on. You could’ve stopped the war and all the devastations of wars with a single thought. And yet, you chose not to! You could have stopped all the bloodshed. And you chose not to put your ability to good use. And that way you are responsible for the death of my 100 sons. The pain of losing 100 sons is borne by me. I curse you to bear the same pain – may your clan be completely wiped out and you be in no position to stop it. you be the witness of that destruction”.

Lord Krishna accepted the curse. Not because he deserved it, but as God, it was His Grace and unconditional love for the devotee to accept all that the devotee offers Him be it a curse even!

God can end any calamity. HE has the ability to change the course of any event. Yes, both facts are true! Yet, he chooses not to. Not because HE wants us to suffer. NO! Because HE lets the Divine Law of Karma take its course.

Each one of us sow enough to bring about our downfall!  But, when the time to bear the consequences comes, we blame the Guru or God for being insensitive. When we are arrogant enough to run our life our way, we should be man enough to bear the repercussions too! We can’t have it one way only!

Most important lesson from his life is ‘karma’ how the law of karma forces us to bear consequences of our ‘good acts’ too!  How we are all bound by our acts and how these karma affects our decision –taking capacities too!

This was told to Lakshmana by his Charioteer Sumitra "Fate indeed is inevitable. Rama is the Avatar of Lord Vishnu. In the ancient times, it so happened that the sons of Diti (the Daityas) conquered by the gods, approached the wife of Brigu and having been granted security (by her) dwelt there (at the hermitage of Bhrigu) fearlessly. The Lord of the Devas (Vishnu) angered at seeing them thus protected by  her, severed the head of the spouse of Bhrigu with his discuss. then the scion of the Bhrigu family seeing his spouse thus done to death, with rage in haste cursed Vishnu, the destroyer of His enemies (the Daityas) thus 'As you have killed my spouse who did not deserve to be killed, infatuated with anger, so you will take birth in the mortal world o remover of mortal woes. Then in your mortal existence you will meet with separation from your spouse for many  years'. Later when Sage Bhrigu suffered the pain of his curse, Lord Vishnu who is ever affectionate to his devotee spoke thus 'For the welfare of the world this curse will be accepted by Me'".

This curse had to be fulfilled during Rama Avatar and hence their separation. You reap what you sow. No Act of anyone goes unpunished even if that act is for the good of the world and necessary and if it has caused pain even to one. The question is “Would you rather be a person acting as per Dharma and take steps for the greater good of all and bear littler personal negative consequences of that act or let the world go to hell for fear of your karma and remain a spineless person and lead life of a varmint”. Choice is yours. Either way you’ll bear consequences of your act. Your choices decide your fate!”  She (the Guru) stopped with the statement as a matter-of-factly. There was silence. It was quite sometime before a voice was heard “This is the first time I heard about this curse. I didn’t know that Rama’s act was governed by his act of previous life – i.e., his karma. This actually shifts the needle differently now. Yeah, now it sort of makes sense. It all seems to fall in place.

On cheating.......

Once, a son of charioteer – Karna, wanted to learn archery. His interest led him to Dronacharya who was the Guru for Pandavas and Kauravas. He sought Dronacharya’s permission to become his sishya – student. Dronacharya said he couldn’t be his guru as he was already teaching Pandavas and Kauravas who were Kshatriyas whereas Karna was a sootah putra – a sudra a class considered much below kshatriyas. Karna was very much disappointed. But, his quest led him to the best master – Parasurama. But, Parasurama had a rule that he never broke – he would never teach a kshatriya. When karma approached him, Parasurama enquired “Are you a kshatriya? Because, I don’t teach kshatriyas. I teach only Brahmins.” Karna, not wanting to miss an opportunity of learning from the great guru Parasurama resorted to a lie and said “Ofcourse not. I am a Brahmin. Please accept me as your sishya.”

Parasurama taught him with lots of love and poured all his knowledge onto his favourite sishya – Karna. One day, when Karna had learned all that he had to from his Guru, Parasurama complained of tiredness. Immediately Karna offered his lap as a pillow to his Guru and let him go to sleep. Parasurama was deeply touched by his student’s guru bhakthi. When he was sleeping, a scorpion came from nowhere and started biting Karna’s lap. Inspite of intense pain, he did not move an inch lest his movement disturbed his Guru’s sleep. Blood started oozing and the cold blood broke his Guru’s sweet sleep. On seeing the amount of blood that was oozing from Karna’s lap, Parasurama was totally confused. He killed the scorpion and then turned towards Karna angrily and said “Any person who can bear this much of intense pain can’t be a Brahmin. You surely are a Kshatriya. Why did you lie to me?” with no chance of escape available, Karna told the entire truth.

Parasurama was indeed very hurt and angry too. He cursed karma saying “You lied to me with the greed of acquiring this knowledge which is so dear and divine to me. Knowledge should always be received and given with purity. Any amount of impurity taints the receiver. Since, it is for this knowledge that you cheated on me, I curse you that it becomes null and void when you need it the most in your life.”

Karna was aghast. His pleadings did not move his Guru who was totally heart broken. During the war of Kurukshetra, Karna’s wheel gets stuck in the mud and as he get’s down the chariot to lift the wheel he is killed by Arjuna. His Guru’s curse had come true. The purpose of learning archery was to proclaim to the world that he was the best archer in the world and he could beat Arjuna any day in his life. But, it was unfulfilled.

Tomorrow is 7th July 2009 and it is Guru pournami. Let’s recheck our values with regards to our Masters and Guru’s honestly for once. Let’s also recheck our values and ethics with regards to honestly with one and all.

People always feel great having cheated on people who trust them. They feel they have made a fool of others. They have got away with it too. But, what they don’t understand and see is their own future. When, in the moment of sheer desperation, they are left with knowledge that doesn’t seem to work (infact, it doesn’t work then…) and with people who don’t help – on the contrary with the people who are going to create more problems in the already problematic situation. Then, they curse their fate and go around stating that someone’s black magic or buree nazar (curse) has brought about this ill-fate in their life. What they don’t tend to see is that it is their own doing that has brought this ill-fate in their life. They think they are very smart when they are using words as surrender to get away with their bad and wrong intentions.

A blessing or a curse!

Every event or a person we encounter remain our "assumed blessing or a curse" only till we go to our next stop in life.

Many times, they seem to interchange - for good or for worst, we don't know and yet they do - mostly!

So, do we treat a situation or a person as a curse or a blessing?

One way would be to leave that 'label' for good number of years so that we let life complete its few rounds and then fall back on our interactions to understand them if they were curse or blessing...

One more way to deal with would be to have a "right attitude" to turn a curse into a blessing and to be grateful for the blessing and not later regret that it happened when the same became "the curse"....this way we would be going from one blessing to the other........

and what converts blessing into curse and vice-versa - our expectations from them at that point of time and the effect it has on us...we are more "defination" oriented people and that if removed would heal most of our suffering....for eg. when we run temperature we think we are suffering and we shouldn't be falling sick. We are good people doing good and right things and these things shouldn't happen to us. It is slowly our work or we are not able to fulfill our "target agendas" whatever that be....

but...if we understand and see fever and our body correctly - yes, i repeat correctly fever means our immune system is working perfectly right and it is fighting the 'bad virus or bacteria or whatever alien' to our system and trying to kill them for us.......so this good is actually seen as bad and we keep suffering our 'bad fate' and pitying ourselves, being angry with Reiki, Gurus, God etc.....but our desire and prayer was to keep us healthy! if that be so, this is right?! Then why are we complaining?

Today, I arrived earlier than usual. The class hasn’t started. Many of us had come. Few were engaged in cleaning the place. Our Guru didn’t ask us to ever. And yet, only the handful always cleaned, arranged and decorated our Guru’s place with flowers that they brought. They even brought scented candles and lighted them. This they did on their own. No one asked them to. They never mentioned it to anyone too! They were joyous when they did it. Today was no exception. I stood there looking at all they did. I found it odd that they did this week after week. I have seen them do this for years now and yet neither were they tired nor was I impressed!

As they were doing their chores I started the conversation. One thing led to another. Slowly one by one joined and the time came when everyone was talking about one and  only topic – Vaishnav. We were commenting on him and having a hearty laugh when our Guru entered the class. She sat down to meditate. We were engaged in our chatter. After some time she opened her eyes. Tea was served. It was a bit chilly today in spite of it being summer. We welcomed tea and biscuits. She drank her tea in silence. Once done, later, she asked us the reason for the commotion.

And what is the purpose of coming to class if (applies to all higher degree students) we assume to just come, sit and enjoy the class (the stress here is on enjoy). We come to class to heal ourselves.

And everybody talks about 'seva' but hardly people put that into practice! And there in lies the reason for 'delay' in our healing - both inner and outer issues!

" Our Guru didn’t ask us to ever. And yet, only the handful always cleaned, arranged and decorated our Guru’s place with flowers that they brought. " - Seva develops the quality of 'owning up to the responsibility of contributing to the place, relationship, company, Nation' that we have! It comes with practice. It is not to be theorised! It has to be lived and put into practice! 

One who takes the initiative to do the 'unsaid' is the disciple.

The others - well, they just are 'vidyarthis' - arthi is one who seeks (like alms). Here it is one who seeks know-how! The Guru gives the same to all! And yet, a disciple receives all and vidyarthi - just little! The difference being in their state of mind and character!

"  They never mentioned it to anyone too! They were joyous when they did it " Anyone who is grateful would do seva! And yet, he owns it not! He doesn't go around saying 'I did it, I did it!' 

Be good but don't be vocal about it!

" - In spite of seeing people doing it week after week, the narrator doesn't work on his attitude. He is not taking the initiative to do it. He on the contrary is finding it odd that others are doing it??!!

This is the nature of the lowest consciousness. To raise above it, only way is to give without asking. To feel responsible towards all who contribute positively in your life. To understand the importance of giving back from where you receive.

" As they were doing their chores I started the conversation. One thing led to another. " - This the the classic nature of people who shun responsibilities. The feeling of entitlement is very high and they feel it is below their stature to do seva! And what do we do in such cases - start useless conversations and divert the mind of people who are doing 'seva'! Observe if that is the case and overcome it.

" She sat down to meditate. We were engaged in our chatter. After some time she opened her eyes. " Guru here sits in meditation and yet the blabber continues. She is leading by example and yet, we are lost in our way of living. This is one weakness we need to address at the earliest and it is the most easiest to attend to!

On cheating.........

cheating is done at various levels.

Physical : Any act of stealing, lying fall under this category. Do we come under the category of a thief? Certainly not – would be the answer. Let’s look into the definition of a thief and then answer this question with all honesty. Thief is “Anyone who takes a thing without the intention of returning it back and also without the permission and knowledge of the owner is a thief.”

Whenever we pay less knowing fully well that we are doing so and taking advantage of others gullible nature and feeling happy too for having fooled the other clearly puts on the level of a cheater. We may name it as a prank, fooling for fun or our own smartness. But, the bottom line is we have cheated. What needs to be given but delayed or forgotten also comes under this category. Debts not payed in the guise of ‘forgotten’ also falls into this category.

Anybody can get away from debts by telling lies or excuses. But the nature can’t be fooled. Usage of words like surrender can’t be used for debts. For eg: they say “I have surrendered to Reiki. When Reiki gives me money to pay you/them, I’ll pay you/them. It is Reiki which is stopping me from clearing my debts to you/them.” Whom are they fooling? Did they ask Reiki while spending money or borrowing it? Are they not spending in any of the purchases? They do go about their life as normal as ever – in fact better than ever. But, only when it comes to paying debts they talk all this non-sense. When it is purchase for self, they don’t ask their spouse or reiki. But, while it is paying debts, “I am not able to pay because of my husband. He is not giving etc….”. think……..

This is the most common way we try to postpone paying our debts. But, by telling lies, we are actually increasing our karma clearance and postponement only means increase in the interest part of it. The more, we postpone the more is the interest. Unfortunately, while paying, we forget the interest part and pay only the principle and consider ourselves as good people who have cleared everything. But, what about the delayed payment. Payment delayed is payment denied. The same is felt by us. Our payment or receipts are overly delayed and then we feel the pinch and complain saying it shouldn’t be so. But, the sad story is we don’t even realize then that we are getting what we have given to others. Whenever others debts are realized, we feel bad that they seem to get lots of money. We even say ‘ what if it’s delayed, you always seem to get all the money due to you’. But, when we receive salary/payments due to us few days later, we crib, complain, curse and taunt the person who owes us. This nature is the basis for faulty financial receipts in our life.

Whenever we break the trust, even there we are cheating…the pain is again received by us from our near and dear ones….then, don’t complain.

Cheating at spiritual level is much more subtle but more deeper and creates much denser karma.
1. Guru ninda – saying anything against one’s guru is the topmost of this cheating.
2. No guru can be taunted at…. One who respects one’s mother just can’t disrespect anyone’s mother. So too, one who respects one’s master/guru can’t /shouldn’t resort to spreading ill words of any master / guru.
3. Addressing someone by the term ‘master’ or ‘guru’ and such terms only to please them, flatter them and with the only view of gaining material benefits from them also is a form of cheating.
4. Sitting to judge/ analyse any master/ guru also falls under this category.
5. Hurting one’s master /guru also takes you away from his grace.
And many such acts develop this character in us.

As we are hurting, cheating and manipulating with our masters / gurus, are we aware of the tilt in the balance sheet of life. Wake up. Take care of your senses. Be on guard.

By cheating we may gain short term and lose the most precious of all gifts from nature and God – that is master’s/ guru’s grace. Grace is something which has to be experienced and also simultaneously realized. It’s the one that keeps the person from fumbling in the deep sea of life and protects us during the storms that reign in our lives. It can’t be measured. It is immeasurable. Person who’s got it, but still unable to realize the greatest treasure of this world is the most pitiable person in the world. Now, what can I tell of the person who’s got it and then lost it out of his greed and nature of cheating? Even God can’t save such a person.

गुरु गोविन्द दोनों खड़े, काके लागून पाऊँ

बलिहारी जाऊं गुरु आपने, गोविन्द जो दिखलाई

If guru and govind both come and stand in front of me at a time, i would be confused as to whom i should salute first. but, very next second i would know that it's guru whom i should salute first as he is the one who's shown me the lord too.... Kabir

Why good people always suffer?

Thank god – life is not just

“I don’t expect anything much in life. I can accept deficiency in any sphere in life, but I can’t accept injustice meted by life on the good people around me. I can’t see ‘my people’ suffering. Why should always good suffer?”

These and related questions are always bombarded at me every time I touch the topic of expectations and anger. The above stands true and justified if touched topically. But, in the larger context of time and life there is nothing as suffering by the good. It is always chosen by the ‘good people’ for their own good by them. It is always by choice. It is never thrust at them by some unknown force above.
Before explaining this statement, let me first look at the first part of the question – “…injustice meted by life on the good people around me..”.
· When I am standing and talking to my friend under a tree, even without a thought I pluck a twig/branch (depending upon my muscle power), pluck a flower and then throw it and am gone from there. No tree taps me on my head (but, that’s what I would do if someone did what I did to the tree – right?). AM I GLAD LIFE IS NOT JUST!

· During rainy season when it rains I curse the rain for dampening my day. Rain doesn’t withdraw from my bore saying I had abused it so many times, so it wouldn’t flow in my pipe line (again this would have been my attitude towards my so-called near and dear if they had said something unwelcome to me-right?). – AM I GLAD RAIN DOESN’T HAVE MY ATTITUDE? AND LIFE IS NOT JUST?

· When I am sitting on the banks of any river, I throw pebbles at it – just for fun or because I don’t have anything better to do. River doesn’t throw water at me nor does it drown me when I wade into it for washing my feet. I would remember the hurt given by someone even years down the line and get back to them physically or at least verbally whenever I get a chance to do so. Right? THANK THE INJUSTICE OF LIFE. RIVER DOESN’T DO SO.

ALL THESE ACTS AND MORE ARE PERFORMED BY THE GOOD PEOPLE IN MY LIFE. Am I glad life is not JUST so many times with them? Think!

Well, coming to the part “why should good people always suffer?”
King Harishchandra underwent so many trials in life because he stuck to his principle “I shall live by Truth alone”. He CHOSE to suffer (as per others definition). But to him he CHOSE it for Truth. He was never unhappy with his choice.

Every person who wants to lose weight goes on a crash diet. They end up making a statement “I am working so hard and suffering not eating good diet to lose weight”. But all through his life Gandhiji chose to eat minimal food out of choice. He enveloped it on his own. He did not suffer it and others who did it out of compulsion. So your choice cannot give you suffering as it is your choice.

Arjuna wanted to be recognized as a great archer in the history. So he was placed in the situations that gave him an opportunity to experience bravery and also to fulfill his desire to be known as a great archer. He chose his life plan. His suffering was out of choice for something that he wanted out of his life. It wasn’t because he was good.

Jesus had to teach the unconditional love by forgiving his enemies also stating “forgive them for they know not what they do”. So he chose to die on cross and suffered the crucification. His suffering (if at all there was) was his choice and not because he was good.

Helen Keller born deaf, dumb and blind went on to become the world’s renowned motivational speaker. She had every reason to suffer but she chose to outgrow self-pity and be a living model to all depressed souls (those with full body parts intact!). She was good. She didn’t ask the question why me and suffer. Instead she chose to outgrow the limitation. She made the CHOICE.

Look closely maybe “trouble should be a new window in the Eastern wall of your house?”

There certainly must be something strangely sacred in salt. It is in our tears and in the sea. But we need to suffer to experience them. But we forget that our GOD in His gracious thirst can drink us all, the dewdrop and the tear.

Once a great tennis player was diagnosed with cancer. A reporter asked her “why have you got this disease?” then the player said when 5 lakh children got the chance of being trained in tennis and I was one of them I didn’t ask “why me?” out of those 5 lakh 50 thousand got intensive training and the list included me, then I did not ask “why me?” when 5 thousand got advanced training and when I was there in it I did not ask “why me?” and when 500 of them reached the grand slam and I still continued to be there in that list I did not ask “why me?” when I won the grand slam out of the 500 people I did not ask GOD “why me?” then why now?

Sufferings may actually be the speed breakers in one’s life that toughens them and strengthens them for good. Isn’t it true that it’s the Turtles that can tell more about the roads than the hares? These sufferings soften the person in a strange beautiful and complete way. Remember the soft power of Gandhiji and Mother Teresa! Strange enough is the fact that the creatures without backbones have the hardest shells.

We life by choice and not be chance! So rejoice at your choice in spite of it bringing you to the steps of suffering (as per your definition!).

So, stop suffering and start living for now,

Me, My guru – Bhagavatam - On the lost city of Dwaraka!

Devaki and Vasudeva assumed Kamsa wouldn’t kill a girl child. But, Kamsa didn’t flinch. He tried to kill her too. But the child flew from his hands and warned Kamsa that the real 8^th born was safe and sound. One day he would be back to kill Kamsa. Kamsa was both terrified and devastated. Years rolled by. Stories of Krishna – the 8^th born of Devaki and Vasudeva spread far and wide. Though he was called Nanda and Yashoda’s son, Kamsa realized he was the one he had been fearing about. So, he sent for Krishna. He invited Krishna to his capital Mathura.

There, Krishna still in his teens found Kamsa, his maternal uncle, and vanquished him. Kamsa was just not an ordinary king. He was very powerful and a very skilled fighter. He was also dear to the then-emperor Jarasandha, not just because of his prowess but also for being Jarasandha’s son-in-law.

Jarasandha being an Emperor was a foe no one dared to have. As such, no king was ready to stand by Mathura and Krishna. Jarasandha’s army came to kill Krishna. The people of Mathura sought protection from Krishna. He realized he was still a kid not yet ready to face the mighty army of Jarasandha. So, he took the people of Mathura along with kids, old and cattle and marched towards the present day Gujarat. Then, Gujarat was a dense forest. No one was believed to come out of that forest alive. Jarasandha’s army felt Krishna and his aides would anyhow meet their end in that dangerous forest. So, they left them. 

Krishna with his people cleared the forest, cultivated the land, and built a big, prosperous, magnificent, glorious city of Dwaraka. Trade prospered. Slowly Dwaraka became a powerful and prosperous state. It grew powerful too!

All the kings of Aryavarta, then Bharath considered Krishna as the king-maker. He played a he role in the politics of Aryavarta.

Now, when prosperity comes, it becomes a very conducive atmosphere for persons to become complacent, avaricious, egoistic – in short become adharmic.

“Good times are proved to have broken more people than bad times”.

It is in good times that ‘the real character’ of the person exhibits itself.
