Abode of Happiness – A short
story!
The man ran towards the pile and
grabbed it. He felt elated. Then a second later was confused and looked at his
Guru who was in deep meditation. He kept staring at his pile and Guru’s face
alternatively for some time and then suddenly with a smile that lit up his
whole being fell at his Guru’s feet, left his pile and walked into the forest.
What exactly happened in this story?
Why did Guru run with the pile if he
had to come and sit at his spot with eyes closed?
What did the disciple understand at
the end and why did he leave behind the pile and entered the forest?
What are we to infer from this?
Where are we to apply it in our life?

Have been about this for a few days now. Will try to answer the questions.
What exactly happened in this story?
The disciple got attached to the material earnings which was causing him pain. He followed his guru’s directions but without understanding the meaning of the advise. He got a job, got married, had children, travelled etc., but he grew attached to those experiences. He did charity and meditation, but without the proper intention or realization. He had done charity and meditation with his ego intact.
Why did Guru run with the pile if he had to come and sit at his spot with eyes closed?
The guru saw the disciple’s attachment towards the materialistic accomplishments. Running around with the pile demonstrated how the disciple was running after the materialistic gains and was stressed about loosing it. After all the running around when the guru sat at his spot meditating and left the pile right in front, he showed that one may run around with/to acquire whatever they want to, but by the end of it they can develop the ability to detach with it and connect with their inner self. If my intention is to be at peace then no matter what I do and what I achieve, I will have (or develop) the ability to find peace within.
What did the disciple understand at the end and why did he leave behind the pile and entered the forest?
The disciple understood that his source of pain was his attachment. He realized that once he detaches himself from this and connects with his inner self, he will be able to find peace. So, he left the attachment behind and entered the world of peace.
What are we to infer from this?
While living our lives we come across ups and downs, gains and losses, joy and pain etc. I need to overcome attachment towards my possession, reputation, and expectations from myself, my family, my friends, my coworkers etc.
From what I understand, by charity we are giving to the universe what we have received from it. In other words, these things do not belong to us and charity helps us understand that and helps us practice detachment.
With meditation we are able to move past these materialistic experiences and the ego. It helps us connect with divinity.
When done consistently (both) we eventually find the path towards self realization and merge with the divine. This I have learned from the various lessons received from my guru and the universe.
Where are we to apply it in our life?
I need to apply this in every aspect of my life. At job, work diligently. When receiving, avoid pride and return it to the universe. When doing chores, do it with gratitude. Remove conditions while living my relationships. When traveling enjoy it and be grateful to the universe for creating those places and giving me the ability to view it. Give, in any way possible, for everything I receive and do it without the feeling of burden.
And, meditate as much as possible - to connect with my inner self and with the divine.
I hope I got my lesson correctly so far. There were a few points in the story that I am still processing and hopefully in time I will have a better understanding of it.
Love and light,
Supriya
