The happy monkey - Short story - on letting go!

The happy monkey - Short story - on letting go!

There once was a happy monkey wandering the jungle, eating delicious fruit when hungry, and resting when tired. One day he came upon a house, where he saw a bowl of the most beautiful apples. He took one in each hand and ran back into the forest. He sniffed the apples and smelled nothing. He tried to eat them, but hurt his teeth. They were made of wood, but they were beautiful, and when the other monkeys saw them, he held onto them even tighter.  He admired his new possessions proudly as he wandered the jungle. They glistened red in the sun, and seemed perfect to him.

He became so attached to them, that he didn't even notice his hunger at first. A fruit tree reminded him, but he felt the apples in his hands. He couldn't bear to set them down to reach for the fruit. In fact, he couldn't relax, either, if he was to defend his apples. A proud, but less happy monkey continued to walk along the forest trails. The apples became heavier, and the poor little monkey thought about leaving them behind. He was tired, hungry, and he couldn't climb trees or collect fruit with his hands full. What if he just let go?

Letting go of such valuable things seemed crazy, but what else could he do? He was so tired. Seeing the next fruit tree, and smelling it's fruit was enough. He dropped the wooden apples and reached up for his meal. He was happy again.

Like that little monkey, we sometimes carry things that seem too valuable to let go. We carry an image of self like the shiny wooden apple. But in reality, our engrossment leaves us exhausted, worried and hungry for a better life. Still, letting go seems crazy. Sisyphus syndrome...?  You will find that it is necessary to let things go; simply for the reason that they are heavy. So let them go, let go of them. It takes much more strength to know when to let go and then do it. You must learn to let go. Release the stress. Unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself , you cannot move forward.

The Real Growth is in Letting Go!

LETTING GO!

Three days back, my neighbour’s son left his mortal body to resume his journey elsewhere. My neighbour who is 75 years old faced the situation with such calmness and equanimity that I learnt a couple of lessons from him. For an onlooker he may have looked insensitive and uncaring, but I saw emotional balance and trust in Lord personified through him. Anybody can appear or act calm in good times, but it is in such times that the person’s real character is put to test. Most of us quote scriptures in good times.

We all can talk philosophy when we give advice to others. But when time comes to live that philosophy we usually break down. We get carried in our ego game. Under ideal conditions anybody can do extraordinary things. But in the ordinary moments of life the extra ordinary character of the person is seen, caught and known.

My regular talks with my neighbour revolved around lord’s will and the surrendrance to his will. Not to forget the belief that his will is with the best of intention in spite of it being in contradiction to my tastes and likes and dislikes. And I found that he actually lived those words when the time demanded him of it. “all the world’s a stage and all men and women mere players”- Shakespeare.

Everyone who comes must also go.

मौत पे किसकी रफ्तागिरी है,
आज उनकी तो कल हमारी बरी है.
“No one’s got a stay on death, today it’s his but tomorrow is my turn.”

Heard it so many times have we, but has it sunk in? In this world only two things are for certain- uncertainty and death. Still why can’t we accept it with equanimity and grace. After all,

हर जनम में हम पोषक ही थो बदलते है
थो फिर हमें मरने या हमारी मरने की यह क्या बात है?
“I just change the attire in each of my lives, then what is this talk of me dying or killing me?”

Once, a Zen Master went to Bombay on an official trip. His three children aged three, two and one died suddenly in his absence at Hyderabad. His wife was perplexed. She didn’t know how to pass this news to her husband. She dressed the children in the inner room for the last journey and waited in the hall for her husband to return the next day. He returned the following day. She gave him water to drink. She asked him to sit down and asked him gently “Dear, if the neighbour asks me to keep few things of theirs for safe keeping in your absence, is it fine if I do so?” He smiled. He knew his wife very well. She could never go back in helping anyone. He nodded and said “Of course, you can. I wouldn’t mind.” She gathered little courage and asked the next question. “If the same neighbour comes back and asks me to return his things to him – again in your absence, would you be angry if I do so?” Zen Master smiled and replied, “He is asking for his things. Why would I be angry if you return his items back to him.”

Wife asked the Zen Master to come in. When he saw the bodies of his three children, he immediately understood his wife’s questions and the reason behind them. He quietly asked his wife to do the needful while he went ahead with his duties.

This balance is a possibility only if our Trust and Belief in GOD is REAL and just not verbal.

We say we believe Him but, only as long as things go in our favour. A little jerk in the routine and the Trust just flies out of the window sill. Why do we always Doubt our Beliefs? Yet faithfully Believe our Doubts? Time we shift our belief to Beliefs and Doubt our doubts. When we presume things going out of hand, actually he is at work to set them right the best possible way! Remember The Little Hut story.

No, this doesn’t apply to just accepting death. It is all to remind ourselves the “Importance of Let Go” in our little sensitive Lives. The moment we term something or someone as OURS, the identification makes it difficult and many times impossible to let it/them let go – though it may be for mutual benefit and good.

We don’t let go of our negative emotions – pain, anger, sadness, jealousies, depression and like because we call them “Mine” – My anger, My pain etc।

We don’t let go of our diseases as we accept them as something that need to be lived them for rest of the life time. We have this unwritten vow with most of our diseases “till death do us apart!”. How faithful we are to our diseases!

We don’t let go of our near ones off the formalities and rituals. We bind them with the formalities and rituals. We are afraid we’ll lose them if they don’t follow any or few formalities or rituals. Guilt and accusations and the weapons used to bring them back to the old ways. Because, we are presumably safe in the known backdrop of dead rituals.

We don’t let go of our near and dear friends because we are afraid of loneliness। We feel we would be left alone for rest of the life। Though at every juncture, we have made new and better friends and moved on both in life and grown as a person with every new relationship that’s come our way। Baseless fear stops us from letting go of the dead relationships too! Who afsana jise manzil thak lana na ho mumkin use ek khoobsoorat mod dekar chodna achha ! (That relationship which cannot be lived till the end should be given a decent and a beautiful turn and left alone!)

The same applies for name, fame, success, assets and all that I address as mine.

Letting Go is an ART that’s to be learnt for sure for happy living and it reflects our Spiritual Quotient too! We are but condemned to this choice of learning this lesson of Letting Go without fail – sooner or later. Then why not now?

Letting go means we are sure that
“when things work my way – its good, but when they don’t its doubly good because His Will is in it and His Will is ALWAYS for my larger Good only – FOR SURE and EVER SO MORE!.

This is the pre-requisite lesson for satisfied, peaceful, blissful and complete Life that each one of us longs to experience and lead.

May the Divine guide you in learning this lesson of life,

revathi

Let go to be peaceful and happy!

Let go to be peaceful and happy!

The cause of all evil is our desire to be superior to others and our selfishness!

The cause of all suffering is our desire to have it our way ONLY! The more we let go of our adamant nature the less we suffer!

The more we let go off of our controlling nature, the better is our relationships.

The more we let go off of the demand to have and lead a life “as per our imagination”, less are the  problems we have in life.

We are fixated in our tastes and preferences. Nothing wrong in that – until those very tastes and preferences become so important and big that we consider everything else happening and receiving in our life as “suffering”. Change this perspective and lo! There was never a problem.

And therefore, inspite of you looking to solve a problem you didn’t get a solution and there can be no solution given to a problem that never was!

on letting go and relationships

On letting go and relationships

Sometimes, it is best for both the parties to let go off the relationship and be in their respective space. It is better to bring distance between people and then be able to think back at that relationship with a smile on face and good memories to fall back on instead of holding on to it and bringing more bitterness to it and finally when it falls back there is only bitterness of aftermath of that relationship…..

This space at times brings people back together – now more mature and understanding of their need for each other and also understanding of what they stand for each other. The lesson learnt also helps in living other relationships with maturity and handling them in a better way…..

Let go is not a bad word. It is better to let go now with a smile than later with a curse…..

Secret of abundance

How to experience abundance in my life?

If you want to lead a life of abundance, then ‘drop’ – drop all is dead and stinking in yourself….not because I tell you to, not even because it is said in puranas, not because it is ethically right – because by doing so, you are bringing in more possibility of abundance into your own life – abundance of physical well being, emotional balance and financial well being too!

How this luggage removes possibility of abundance from our lives? - abundance of physical well-being, emotional well-being and financial well being too!

Every single emotion such as anger, greed, frustrations, hatred, jealousy et like stem from the centre that is EMPTY - Centre that is YOU. Emptiness can’t be filled inspite of being dumped with all and sundry. Nature has the golden rule – “It gives back in abundance what you give to Nature. As I am giving emptiness, I get only that in abundance back – maybe wrapped in goodies sometimes but emptiness nevertheless…”.

For example, anger gives out helplessness, feeling of wronged, frustrations and a sense of not being understood. This energy goes out to the world and creates such returns to me only. So, I’ll be put in situation where I would feel helpless, feeling of wronged, frustrated and misunderstood. Now, that the situation is real, I would react again with the same feelings – may be with higher degree and it becomes a vicious circle. It has a snowball effect on the chain of events that follow in my life. First feeling is the seed that is called karma and it branches out as a situation or an event in the near or distant (sometimes long forgotten) future where the fruits are going to be of the same seed – remember. If I planted a seed of anger, my tree would give out fruits of frustrations, anger, helplessness etc. But the funny part is I plant one seed and from it comes thousands of fruits – all bitter and sour and painful to me. And the tree comes out in my life as a situation or an event. When I was not comfortable with one seed of anger, no doubt I suffer more with the thousands of fruits of anger lying all around me in my house and backyard.

The next reason is once I am surrounded by this energy I would attract similar energies only. Since, there is no spelling of abundance in this energy, I don’t experience it in my life. Life is such a plate in which only few things can be accommodated. I have already filled it with anger, frustrations, jealousy etc, then where is the place for good and happening things in my life? So, if I want abundance, then I should be letting go off anger so that I am available for abundance in my life. And letting go means to forgive and move on in life…

Just look at the picture....Sunlight comes in abundance into thick forest - but it is possible because of an opening only....let the sunlight bring abundance in your life....but for that you should keep your doors and windows open.  That means, to open up to positivity, love, gratitude, giving, sharing and this is possible by letting go of old and worn out feelings of complaining, conditions, hatred, expectations et like.....

Karela ka jhaad bo kar mein aam kit ho intezaar nahi kar sakthi na? after sowing seeds of bitter gourd, I can’t expect it to give out mangoes…think about it.....

It’s all the game of energies, what you create, you experience. So create with little more responsibility – towards your sweet self only and with awareness…because what you sow, so you reap!

So, to receive abundance of joy, you need to sow it by giving it in the first place. To receive satisfaction, you need to have gratitude for all the things received and owned by you. To receive love and respect, you need to give that to others in the first place....

Whatever you want, you need to 'sow' it as seed by giving it in abundance to receive it....

if you want pain, complain.
if you want hatred, hate.
if you want confusion, manipulate.
if you want restlessness, cheat others (and then you never will be able to trust even GOD ).
if you want mean and selfish persons, be hurting to people who love you and drive them away from your life....

On letting go and relationships

Sometimes they move on. They were meant to be together for such time only and that is good in its own way. Carry only the good memories and benefits of that togetherness rather than  what should have been or who was wrong etc etc….

Not everyone is meant to be ‘forever’ friends or ‘lasting for ever’. You meet, you leave. You learn, you grow.

Its good we met and we lived those moments rather than not having met at all!
Either way, I now know what I want and I can’t stand! So, this has been a fulfilling relationship…

If relationships are viewed this way, there is no hard feelings either way it goes…..think about it….

What birds teach us - Me, My Guru

Contd....

What birds teach us?

Me, My Guru

What is seen as ‘old-age homes’ is not bad if it is properly understood and applied. If children out of greed and selfishness push parents out of the house after usurping all their earnings, then it’s their bad karma and that is ‘Adharma’. But parents if (and they should by the way)understand and apply this time and opportunity to live within the means and in study of self and scriptures – away from the familial circles – nothing like it! It may sound harsh. But think when you want to pursue your spiritual need seriously, if not atleast after 60 years. Learn to ‘let go’ from birds. Only a person who knows when to ‘let go’ can be peaceful and happy”.

We had our much need tea break! God, that last one was a sixer. Most of us wanted our parents to listen to it and apply but following it personally – that seemed too demanding and far stretched. It looked good on paper but to apply it, well, we weren’t sure! Like many of her words we chose to ‘hear’ her words and not follow it later.

Later during our discussion, we decided we would take it slow and work on the first stage of ‘letting go’ with regards to kids. We would bring them up with utmost care, love and affection sharing the principles that we wish to look up to (yes, we look up to and not one that we lived, because it was easier to give them ‘right’ Ideals rather than be one. But just because we couldn’t live up to our principles, doesn’t mean we don’t pass it on to them. Who knows maybe they can raise their standards to our set principles). But all the while working on our
‘attachment’ to our expectations, hopes and conditions on them so that when they are ready to leave our ‘nests’ of love and support, we are able to ‘let go’ without any feeling of remorse, anger, hurt, disappointment, complaint and depression. Yes, we could do that right from today especially since we had our Reiki techniques to fall back on. This decision seemed to take a huge burden from our head. We were pleasantly glad with ourselves. We had a workable and achievable plan and action. We felt arrived! We seemed to have done work of a decade with just that decision. We deserved one more round of tea for certain. We left her place in peace. She really must be glad to have us as her students...we guessed – nay, I did......

Indian Mythology - Shiva and Parvathi - Me, My Guru

Contd....

Just to marry ‘her own and ONLY’ husband, she did such ‘severe penance’. Even to get what is yours karmically, you need to do such tapas. That is the lesson this ‘Avatar’ of hers teaches us! And all that only to get married to him! Not for life after that. Where are in this path? Letting go off all the comforts is a ‘type’ of penance. So is doing away with basic needs. She was a princess who let go off all the comforts and luxuries of her life just to be in close proximity of ‘her love’, when He didn’t even acknowledge her presence

Next, food, clothing and shelter are basic ‘needs’ for anyone’s life. She let go off that too gradually. And not just one or two days but for years on end! Yet she wasn’t depressed or angry at Him. She waited doing and fulfilling her part of relationship.

Where are we in our relationship? How much do we give and what? What little we give, we demand 1000 times of that! And yet we are depressed because of our relationships? How ironic is that? If we are truly in love (which we often declare to be in), then why do we count every second of our wait and crib? Patience is the essential virtue in love “I can’t wait maam”, can’t be the cry of any wait or love....so face, the truth, know yourself and your intentions clearly and completely and for heaven’s sake stop defending your intentions and desires as justified enough to go into depression and pain..........

If you ‘truly love’ something, it’ll be yours. Yes, that’s too! But when the ‘Time’ comes. You can’t want something now and want its fulfilment too just now! Karma and life is not 2 mt noodles. Understand that!

Once a young and an intelligent lady desired to mother a child and she started talking and complaining about it to one and all! Many people seeing her plight gave various suggestions which would fulfil her dream. One such tip was ‘do pradakshina’ (circumambulate) the banyan tree which is in the courtyard of that village’s Shiva temple. Now, next day early in the morning, this woman got up, took bath and rushed to the temple. There she would circumambulate the tree and look at her stomach”.

We all laughed. We knew this story, yet when she explained with that tinge of sarcasm in her voice and her eyes rolling, it sounded really funny. Maybe, that’s why we didn’t mind even hearing the same story again and again from her. “So, you can understand the stupidity in her act. Then why can’t we see ourselves doing the same thing?” she asked with lots of concern in her voice. We didn’t have an answer. It was odd though. Later when we discussed this, we agreed that none of us felt hurt here.

On knowing self -Me, My Guru

On knowing self -Me, My Guru

Contd.....

A man filled with lust sees object of his desire everywhere and a Buddha sees Buddha in everyone!

And hence Ravana saw ‘object of desire’ in Mother Sita. The fault was not in Sita ma. It was in his eyes and character. Like-wise, Buddha saw ‘a divine soul’ in a highway dacoit – Angulimaan who went on to become one of his best and Enlightened disciples. A sadhak can get ‘message from his Guru/divine’ even from a film. I experienced it. We just had to be tuned to our Guru’s vibrations and they have their own way to reach and teach us. This I call as ‘play way of method’ of her teaching.

In similar situations, I had pitied her so many times for patiently teaching us and coaxing us to understand ‘the teachings’. Not this time! I didn’t pity her. Neither was I angry with self. I felt gratitude for all the love that our Guru exhibited through her teachings. Yes love found its expression through minute excuses. And what did I give in return - A bland and a routine ‘thankyou maam’ which sounded more mechanical than genuine now even to my ears. I had to live her words. I had to ‘let go’ off my causes of pain by simply applying her time tested techniques. I by living a life of abundance gave her one of the best gifts.

She said ‘don’t argue, defend or justify’. Now I saw it. We didn’t
let go because we had our reasons to hold on to our hurts. Yes, the other did hurt and insult us. They don’t understand us. We justify our emotions of pain, hurt by their actions. It wasnt’ as if ‘she didn’t understand’. She did and hence gave this simple technique “don’t justify or defend’. If I didn’t justify my emotions then the talk of him (the one who hurt) didn’t arise and then how could I go on in this ‘pain trip?”. She wanted just that. She wanted us to get down that train that took us to ‘hell of pain and suffering’. And all I need to do was ‘stop defending and justifying’.

Once this continuous chatter of others being wrong and us being right stops we are in a space of silence that reflects our Nature to us! That’s what was our question “how do I know and understand self?” she had bundled all our issues under one head and gave a simple panacea of tip “Stop defending and justifying” and thereby ‘letting go’ and automatically entering the ‘Me Zone’.

God – it was so obvious and yet I had wasted all these years. Even if I had simply followed her ‘do’s and don’ts’ it could’ve brought me here long back!

Well. Better late than never!

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Contd....

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Guru smiled with pain and replied “I am not letting him go because he is so good – both in studies and as a person. I can’t imagine living without him. So, I couldn’t let him go. But, as you pointed out, I need to suffer his separation and let him go. Go send for Gautama. I will relieve him today”.

Gautama came and stood before his Guru with folded hands. He was 70 years 70-year-old man standing in front of his Guru. Guru’s eyes teared up seeing his beloved shishya. He said “You are to pass out with other students today. You’ll leave the ashram today. Go collect your belongings.”

Gautama bowed to his Guru and turned to leave. His guru stopped him and asked, “Don’t you want to know why I took so long to let you go?”

Gautama replied with folded hands and head bent “You must be having a valid reason”.

Guru’s eyes were filled with tears of joy. He was filled with love for his shishya. He hugged his dearest Shishya tightly and said “I bless you to regain your youth. I also give my 16-year-old daughter’s hand in marriage to you. You’ll leave the ashram as the youth. Go lead a life worthy of yourself”.

Gautama was just as young as his friends were when they left the ashram. He went on to become a great teacher. His ashram became very famous and many pupils passed out of his ashram.

Me, My Guru - On life and death – III!

Contd....

Me, My Guru - On life and death – III!

3.Don’t wait to share your affection, thoughts (right ones), time, gifts with the person you care about. You never know when you have to say ‘goodbye’ to people in your life. When we lose a person then we sit and regret and miss that person. Don’t be that fool any longer. Just live relationships for what and how they are meant to be like! Throw that list of complaints, to-do-list and fault-finding nature out of the window. Go, live life with that person. We miss out on ‘living a relationship’ (when I say relationship I don’t mean just the one that all want to or have with the ‘special one!?’ but every relationship that constitutes our world) by way of complaints and then pray “God, give me long life” Why? Whatever you are doing now, you are going to do till 100!?

What is the purpose of carrying this bitterness till ripe old age? We are waiting for that ‘special person’ to come. We are wishing for person ‘now’ in our life to vanish from our lives. We are assuming to live life happily in our imagination. There in our imagination we have all our conditions met. But, that day, sadly is never gonna come. So, in short we are never gonna be happy. Then why live life so long?

4.People who sit to discuss, analyse and trying to understand hardly go from point A to B. But, the one – the one like that students’ sister – the moment they hear about someone being in some sadhan would follow suit. They don’t sit to gauge its uses, benefits or understand it’s working. That is ‘love’ (love for self) that drives you to pick up something even without reasoning about it. That is ‘trust’ that drives a person to reach great heights of growth through a simple procedure followed. The quality required for this is purity of intent, trust and surrenderence!

"the moment they hear about someone being in some sadhan would follow suit." - 1.Most common excuse for not coming to class or doing sadhan is "I don't have company" or "I am waiting for XYZ to get time so that we would come together"

Do everything in life together. But we are born alone and die alone. We also have to fight our inner demons alone! Don't wait for others to come with  you. ONLY in this area of life, be totally selfish. Ask others to come with you, encourage others to work with you and come with you. But if they don't, don't wait for them. It's your time and life you are wasting. Think about it!

2.The sister of the monk did not postpone being in sadhan. She didn't say "But Buddha is dying. I will learn at my pace and at my sweet convenience." We all assume we have time. WE DON'T. Don't fret it away with lame excuses. Sadhan, sadhan nothing like sadhan!

Grab every opportunity to fine tune yourself! Every step taken towards knowing your inner thoughts takes you towards your real self - the core of your being - the centre of abundance of every kind!

When  you come to class, you not only heal yourself but with your 'healed self' you are better company to the one you are/have been waiting for. Isn't it? A person when he heals himself, makes atmosphere good and comfortable to all with whom he is interacting, living and being in relation with! Then is it not sensible to come alone rather than not come alone to class?

Do you stop sleeping, eating, travelling or enjoying life just because that 'someone' is not there with you? Then why that reason for sadhan and for coming to class?

Question time :

The points explained doesn't sum up all the points that can be understood through this post. There is lot more to it than that meets the eye!

All the students understanding doesn't sum up all that needs to be understood from the story that the Guru told. What is your take on that story?

How did this post make its mark?

What did you take from this post?
