In a certain forest lived a
woodcutter all alone in his hut. He would cut the wood in the forest daily,
sell it, eat his food and sleep. His life was a simple routine. One day he
found a wounded parrot in the forest path. He felt bad for the parrot. He
brought it home, tended it and fed it. Overtime, the parrot regained its
health. The woodcutter put the parrot in the beautiful cage that he made
especially for it. Daily after days chores, parrot and woodcutter would spend
hours talking to each other. Parrot was happy it was treated well but it also
longed to fly high in the sky like other birds. One day, the woodcutter forgot
to shut the door of the cage. The parrot seized the opportunity and flew away.
The woodcutter came home to an
empty house. He was saddened to death. He felt angry, cheated, and lonely. Days
passed. He kept missing the parrot. One day, after having lunch we slept under
the tree. When he got up, he found the parrot in front of him. They both were happy
to see each other. They spent hours talking to each other.
The woodcutter did not ask or put
the parrot in the cage and the parrot too did not fly away. They lived together
enjoying each other’s company for years to come.
What does this story talk about?
What does cage represent?
How are we to apply it in our
lives?

Greetings to you Revathi Mam,
I understand it as below :
1) What does this story talk about?
It talks about freedom while you are still with in a relationship with someone. Even though there are 2 different people involved but still their individual freedom is also important for a healthy relationship to sustain.
2) What does cage represent?
Cage represents binding / selfish love / conditional love ie.. if you behave to my liking then only I will love you or I love you so you should only behave as to my liking etc... which sooner or later will fall apart.
3) How are we to apply it in our lives?
When you are in a relationship try to respect other's opinions / freedom / life style even though you may not agree its correct or may not like it etc..
According to what I felt I am writing the following
What does this story talk about?
This story is talking about ourself the and freedom of our self that is let ourself to be free from our own inhebitions our beliefs our way of understanding mainly it is talking about our belief systems
Like the life of wood cutter our life is very simple as Mam says see things as they are not as you want them to be
Coming to th parrot it is like our mind which is free to Rome because we can think anything go anywhere with our mind
What does cage represent?
Cage here represents our belief systems ego emotions as long as we r bound to them we r looking at a mirage and being happy temporarily also we r making others life difficult but still we feel we r happy
How are we to apply it in our lives?
We can apply this especially the end where the woodcutter initially is very angry then he gets over this as days pass and misses the parrot once they both see each other they start living together freely
We miss our connectivity though some one with in is always saying we r going in a wrong way we don’t bother then we start feeling irritated then by the grace of the divine guru we start doing sadhan though the sadhan may be initially single technique we start getting the result or connectivity with our mind slowly the belief systems start breaking away and we start the journey together internally and we know though u leave the mind freely it will always guide u in a right way when we surrender to the devine guru
Once we start the internal journey it reflects in our other aspects of life thus leading to a healthy life not only with our selves but also with others.
What does this story talk about?
Both the interpretations above sound true, but something else came to my mind when I read this. I feel it talks about how we drive our object of desire/ our end goal away from ourselves. The parrot represents our desires and goals.
What does cage represent?
The cage represents the terms and conditions laid out by us for the fulfillment of the desire. These are born out of our psychic impressions. No wonderwwo are not happy even when our desires are fulfilled. But when we let go of the barriers set by ourselves, and surrender to God, do we see our wishes and desires expressed in the most beautiful way.
How are we to apply it in our lives?
We need to let go of our preconceived notions and psychic impressions to enjoy the gift of life. We need to free our mind from this self created cage.
Live and let live.
Now the meaning of the story changed completely for me
