Only I am Right!

“If I am right, all others who don’t agree to my opinion aught to be wrong.”
“If he is right, I am wrong.”
“Only one of us can be right”
“Either he or I am right. Tell us who it is?”

This Belief System puts us on the defensive or aggressive side (depending upon my character) and I automatically consider the other to be my rival whom I need to prove wrong. But, it is not so. Both of us can be right individually and yet not agree with each other. For eg. When five blind men touch the elephant, first one said “elephant is so small and so thin (He was holding elephant’s tail). The second one said “No, certainly not. It is so huge and erect. He was holding the leg of the elephant. The third disagreed with both as he touched the trunk of the elephant and said “but it is so long, not so fat but yet thin and moving to and fro”. The fourth who was standing between two legs shouted at all the others calling them blind and said “the elephant is not as any of you say. It is like two pillars with space in between.” The fifth who touched the tummy brusted out laughing and said “Oh ye fools, elephant is oval in shape and spreads along the sides”. All of them were right, yet none of them knew that the other was also right. Similarly,

Upon the road of Kalinga, a traveler met a man who lived in a nearby village and the traveler pointing with his hand to a vast field asked the man saying “Was not this the battle-ground where King Ashoka overcame his enemies?”

And the man answered “this was never been a battle ground. This has never been a battle-ground. There once stood on this very field the great kingdom of Kanishka which was over-powered and plundered. But now, it is a good field, is it not?”

And the traveler and the man parted.

Not a half mile farther the traveler met another man and pointing to the field he again said “So this was where the kingdom of Kanishka was. Right?”

And that man immediately said “No, no. There never was Kanishka here. There was a monastery but was destroyed by people of foreign origin. And now, it is a great field.”

Now the traveler moved further along the road and sat down under the tree. There came a third man to whom the traveler said “So, there was a huge monastery as this place once?”

That man gave a odd look to the traveler and explained “There never was a monastery in this neighbourhood, but our forefathers have told us that once there fell a great meteor on this field.”

By now the traveler was totally confused. He met an old man who looked wise too. So he saluted him and asked him “sir, upon this road I have met three men who live in the neighbourhood and each denied what the other had to say about this field. Each in turn also had a new tale to tell that the other had not told. I am confused. Please enlighten me on this subject.”

The old man smiled and answered “ My friend, each and every one of these men told you what was indeed true; but few of us are able to add facts to different fact and make a truth complete thereof!”

Our opinions shouldn’t be our ego projections. They are at the end of the day only opinions which are bound to change over the period of time. Why be so protective about them? Opinions should help in knocking out our ignorance and help us in easing the situation and in bringing out the solutions to the fix we are in. Opinions shouldn’t be the problem creators, they are problem solvers.
Let us not identify ourselves with our opinions. They are ours. We are not because of them. We are not insulted if our opinions are rejected. Know this Truth. Apply it and become liberated.

The basis of any good relationship should be and can be only when we agree to disagree.

Any disagreements?

I am OK, YOU are OK! Possible?

The common belief systems which harm our relationships are:

If I am right, all others who don’t agree to my opinion aught to be wrong.”

Me, My Guru – On disagreement

Me, My Guru – On disagreement

“But so many of your explanations are painful to me!” he cried out.

Reasons for Disagreements | Perception quotes, Disagreement quotes ...
Perceptions

“It is not my explanation that is painful. It is your expectation from me. You want me to give answers which are pleasing to your taste and ears. Those answers you already know. Why should I reiterate what you want to hear? I’ll only give answers that need to be given!” our Guruji was still explaining, when he cut in to complain. “But I don’t agree with them. I hate God for making you say such things when they don’t mean anything.”

“My answers are not my opinions or beliefs. They are ‘absolute truths’. You need not believe them. You need not accept them. In fact, I don’t expect you to understand them either. Yet, my answer would remain so! They are not for you to believe, understand, or accept. They are to be heard by you, as of now! You are free to disagree with them; that’s your choice. But my duty is to give an answer which is needed; one which is right. I am not here to please you with my answers; I don’t have to win you over with it. So feel free to disagree wholeheartedly with my explanation and answer.”

Being respectful in spite of differences of opinion

“But everyone is judging me for disagreeing with you” Vaishnav sulked.

“They are not angry because of your disagreement. Their anger is because of how you disagree” she replied.

Disagreement on an issue is not personal
“Sorry Guruji, I didn’t get it” he said, a little mellowed.

previous posts on this topic : https://kantipadam.blogspot.com/search?q=opinions

Questions addressed :
  • Why does that person not understand?
  • How to make that person see reason?
  • What do I do about the pain and suffering because that person doesn't understand me?
  • How to address anger that comes when someone doesn't accept what you are saying?
Points to ponder upon :
  • Opinions, beliefs are subjective. Don't make them personal.
  • Just because some one doesn't accept, see your opinion it doesn't mean he hates/dislikes/disrespects you.
  • They don't agree with your opinion means they don't agree with your OPINION only! It doesn't mean they have problem with you.
  • Learn to see the difference between person and his opinion.
  • As long as we identify with our beliefs, opinions, advice we suffer when it is not accepted, rejected or ridiculed. Heal the identification NOW!

Observation :  The way you have described yourself in one word is interesting in more than one ways. Just note it in your journal with present date on it. This description may change for some of you at a later date. That is ok. The day you feel you are better described in a different word or sentence than what you presently feel, again write it down in your journal ..........

Regarding describing others - fascinating. Some descriptions make it so intriguing and I wish I met some of them......good........

On pain and suffering – Frog in the well Story

Explanation Further to https://kantipadam.blogspot.com/search?q=frog+in+the+well

On pain and suffering – Frog in the well Story

One of the causes of pain and suffering is ‘difference’ between people. The difference usually is in the following areas:

1.Religion and caste

2.Language

3.Food habits

4.Daily habits

5.Manners and etiquettes

6.Dress code

7.Life style choices

8.Belief systems and

9.Opinions

(you can add on the rest that come to your mind..)

All the above difference can be again broadly classified as

1.Life style Choices

2.Belief systems and opinions

One effects at physical level and the other at mental level eg. Opinions etc. Once you see them as just these differences it is surprising as to how this difference can create disharmony in our lives and affect our state of mind and peace of mind and happiness.

In actuality ‘variety’ is the spice of life. Then how come this ‘variety’ becomes the basis of our fights and resentment. This becomes the cause of difference between people.

The frog in the well story just explains this aspect clearly.

Similarly we live in the tininess of our ‘wells’ be it of life-style, opinions, principles, religion – just about anything. And then from the tininess of our ‘wells’ we judge the other who also lives in the similar ‘small well’ of his own. And each considers his well to be superior to the other. Each presumes his ‘well’ to be ‘the all’ of the Universe which gives them the belief “Only I am Right” and anyone who is outside of my ‘well’ which is way of living, opinion, tastes, likes and dislikes is a ‘bad person’ by default.

If, if only each one of us could come out of this limitedness of well and see the expanse of ocean of life, then there would be less or no pain, suffering, dislike and more or only respect, love and happiness in the world. How? Simple! All I need to understand is my life-style is comfortable to me and hence right for me but to the other his life-style is more akin to him. In short each is right in our way of living unfortunately we carry a wrong belief system that if I am right the other is automatically wrong and hence with our survival instinct put down the other to be right. It need not be so. We both can disagree on any issue and yet both can be right. That is the actual Truth. The one who is exposed to larger world or group of people from various backgrounds will be more open to variety and choice of others in contrast to people who live among a small limited and similar group of people.

On feedbacks etc....

On feedbacks etc........

Let’s agree to disagree!

How much do opinions matter?

Feedback doesn’t mean you ‘cut paste’ some quotation in the comments section....that would be good on  your whatsapp group activity list, not here....say something substantial not to sound ‘great or wise’.....and before writing something read it and understand it...don’t write for others....if your personality and life activities are diametrically opposite to your words, then think, whom are you impressing? Do all that in your ‘FB/whatsapp/ and all other sites where you can fish for ‘likes’ ....here people who converge are such of souls who want to transform themselves and working on healing themselves and working on their limitations and short-comings....don't make it a place where forwarded messages are sent or received.....

one good feedback was ....
“....i wanted to tell that I disagree with what you say but was afraid.......”

How many times each one of us must have thought this thought? Scores of times.....

And with whom – mostly our near and dear ones...and the few ‘unfortunate ones’ even with outsiders like colleagues, servants and even with strangers. Here, I am taking into account such of people who ‘intentionally hide facts’ from others for reasons better known to them with the sole intention of cheating, fooling the others or to get away with their little crimes – of passions!

So, normal people want to be honest especially with near and dear ones. But end up not being honest as they are afraid of hurting people who matter to them. At the same time they don’t want to mess up their relationship with these people. At such times, we hold our relationship more important and higher to our opinions and so let it be.

The reason behind this act is no doubt good. There can’t be any other way of looking at it. But, inspite of having and good reason we mess up our relationship in the long run. Surprised? Let me explain. When we are dishonest, fear creeps in or in other words, where there is fear, only at places dishonesty exists. Well, the fear is that of hurting the other – yet there is fear. That is not all good sign for any long term relationship.

Yes, in any good relationship sweet lie is a must. Some times truth can really hurt and an innocent lie can avoid it. For example during pregnancy and after delivery when a woman asks “how do I look?”, you need not be too ‘honest’ there. Don’t blabber statements like “God, you look fat”, you’ve lost it” etc. She’s gone through a lot physically, emotionally – so don’t hurt her psychologically too! its OK to say some good words. You need not lie but can still say something which is not a lie yet not hurting like “You look beautiful always to me”. It’s not a lie and yet....truth need not always be hurtful. That is where ‘clarity of thought’ expresses itself. A fool following the rule “I’ll tell only Truth” will hurt the other in the name of Truth, whereas the wise will not lie, yet will package truth from different angle. Coming to our topic of being honest – why do we think we hurt others when we disagree on some issue? All through I’ve been talking about ‘clarity of thought’ and ‘ego’. Right from first class, I’ve always stressed the importance of “Who am I?” and “Knowing self”. I’ve explained umpteen times that me identifying with what is not me is called ego. Read link “ego”  http://kantipadam.blogspot.in/search?q=ego  for further classification. One of the things we wrongly identify as ‘ourselves’ is ‘our opinions’.

Does the same thing apply to my opinions too?

Yes, if they are my opinions. But if they are ‘laws of Universe’ that I am talking about, then also you can damn well disagree – but don’t stick to your thought with blind commitment just because it is yours. You don’t lose yourself or your self esteem if you are agreeing to what I am saying or explaining.

Then do you have to blindly accept what I say?

You can’t even if I order you to. That’s how our nature is made. When God’s word is not taken blindly by us, how can we take some other mortal’s words over ours blindly? Not possible!

Then what do we do here........?

Just listen! Yes – just not hearing the sound, but hear to listen! Don’t listen to agree but just listen. Don’t listen to contradict me, but just listen.

Listen to what I have got to say.

And I am sure it is easier to do as you say and believe that you’ve faith in me and my word! Listen, not to accept it blindly or follow blindly – which is difficult for any sane mind to do – so just listen with an open mind. If your thoughts were in conjecture with mine, where was the need for me to be in your life? Think about it!

Here, I am not a religious or a political head wanting some ‘blind followers’ – so you are off that mark for sure! I am not a ‘cult figure’ asking you to propagate our culture so that we can start branches all over the world! No, I am not in that race too – so you are free by that account too! have you seen any of my students pleading people in malls and bazaars to attend week-end classes and singing my praises? No – never!

So, you are not here to be one of the crowd rattling the words common to all like ‘Love all’, ‘smile and enjoy’ etc. You are here to know yourself at your pace and within your comfort level. And revelation of self always means ‘a jolt to our present way of thinking’. And I am just playing that part. But doing that just for the sake of it would mean senseless blabber at my end. If that is the case, then you can conveniently forget what I am saying, better you leave me – the day it happens. But, now any law that I state is based on ‘Universal and Eternal Truths’ which can’t be mended to suit my fancy. Yes, they are done so by some cults and religious heads to fulfill their agenda, but as we already have seen that I am not having any such agenda, I need into and don’t do that. But, still these laws will be something beyond our levels of understanding and acceptance till we grow to that level of understanding. Yes, we all need to go through this teething problems.so, be with it. I know it’s frustrating and anger stems from every pore as we presume ‘no one understands me’ as our opinions are not accepted and counter argued by the person whom we seek guidance from. These laws are just so. We can’t keep arguing about them or judge them. We can only understand them completely and learn to apply them in our lives. For example, fire is hot and water is cold. Why is it so? “It would be so safe if fire wasn’t having ‘burning’ quality” – This statement does certainly have an argument and from certain angle also seems valid but yet nothing can be done about it. It is so! That’s all! Fire is hot and water is cold and it extinguishes fire.
