On comparison

…contd….

Now, tell me in such environment how can one be happy? And if one is not happy how can that one give happiness to others. See the connection?

2.The second emotion we generate is that of so called happiness – one that we experience when we compare with someone inferior (supposedly only) to us.

I call that emotion as ‘supposed happiness’ because it is not real happiness. Why? Because it is sadistic pleasure and that emotion can never give you lasting happiness and that which is not lasting can’t be real too!

Difficult to believe? When I compare with someone and feel elated that I am better than that person, it means my definition of happiness itself is wrong.  It states ‘I’ll be happy only when others are bad’ (here it meaning physically – I mean physically not good looking or having some ailment..). Indirectly you state, my happiness rests in others pain, discomfort, incompleteness, ugliness, suffering, loss, ailment…..and the list continues. Oh my God! What are we saying? Just listen to yourself.  This is demonic pleasure. Right? No doubt, it is sadistic pleasure. If so, then can it give real happiness? No. no wonders we are ever so in pain and suffering.  We are ever in search of peace, happiness, satisfaction and Love.  And here, I am not sorry to say – they can never be yours as long as your definition of happiness is dependent on others unhappiness or failure. And that’s exactly the reason why our emotions fluctuate – dangerously, erratically and even without warning – towards the extremes of highs and lows and we are ever so drained all through the day and even night! This is not because of the physical acts that we do through the day as we presume, but because of the fluctuations in emotions that we experience from pain, anger, depression to sadistic pleasure/ satisfaction – and that depends with whom we are comparing ourselves with all through the day.

Jealousy

Jealousy

One saint by name “Truptram” lived in Himalayas for many years. He exuberated love all around him so much that children in the neighbouring village came to him and enjoyed his company all through the day. One day, he felt if he could love other’s children so much, how much more he can love his own children? This thought pushed him towards the plains below. He choose a lady to share his life with, married her and lived happily for few months to come.

His wife found after some-time that her happiness was not much when compared with others. She found happiness wanting. She requested her husband ‘Truptram’ to do something about it. He asked her as to what she exactly wanted. She said “A huge bunglow”. He told her he could bring anything with his yogic powers but there was a condition. Whatever they got, their neighbours would always get double. She agreed to this condition. She got a bunglow. Out of joy, she ran out to tell her neighbours about it but to her dismay, she found that each of her neighbour got two bunglows. Her joy immediately evaporated. She ran inside and cried her heart out.

Next day, after much thinking she felt she should ask for Benz car. She requested for the same from her husband. He chanted the mantra and they got a car. She felt she could really feel others being jeolous of her new car. She wanted to see their pain on their face. She rushed out. But……..

But, she found that all her neighbours got two cars each. She was totally disheartened. She felt she never could be happy with things going this way. The more she worked her way to possessing something, her neighbours always ended up having two of them. Her pain knew no bounds. She had no one to share her suffering too! No one understood what she went through the whole night.

Then an idea stuck her. Her happiness knew no bounds. She now knew where her happiness was! She had the key to her happiness at last!

Morning came. She went excitedly and asked her husband to wish “I should lose one leg and one arm.” Truptram became puzzled and said “But, you’ll have to live with a husband who has only one leg and one arm. How can you be happy in that situation?” His wife smiled and said, “You are seeing what I’ll have to live with. But, I am seeing what others have to live with! Everyone’s husbands’ will lose both arms and legs! Such a beautiful thought! I never suffered with what I had! I always lived with pain because of what others had! It may be difficult nay impossible to have more than others, but atleast I can see that others lose more than me and that way can be more richer and happier than them – always!”

Her husband though confused went ahead with her wish. He lost his one arm and a leg. Neighbour’s men lost both arms and legs. She was at last happy.

Few days passed and life seemed so boring.. she felt she deserved some new happiness. She asked her husband “Please pray ‘I lose my one eye’. Truptram knew that there was no point in arguing with his wife. So, he just did as told by her. He lost his one eye but in the neighbourhood, in each house, man of the house lost both of his eyes. Gloom descended in the entire village. But, Truptram’s wife’s happiness knew no bounds. She partied and her happiness spread over few weeks.

A boy with a fractured hand!

contd...

A boy with a fractured hand!

Happiness is a State of Mind! It can’t be a charity that is made by others. ‘Happiness’ is not a thing that can be bought, given or gifted by others to you.

It is a ‘state of Being’ and hence (unfortunately) in our hands ONLY.

Happiness can’t be purchased.

Happiness can’t be given away.

I purchased buildings, lands, diamonds etc etc – possible!

I purchased happiness – Not possible!

I am HAPPY – Possible if seen as a ‘state of being’ instead of seen as ‘action verb’

‘AM’ is a state of being, as state of existence and that is in our hands ONLY. If you are not happy, it has nothing to do with ‘the other or others’ (who so ever it b) in your life.

It has to do with your choice ONLY. It simply means ‘I chose to suffer’.

Applications of Il Dolce far Ninete!

…contd……

Deepa started her explanation “I had my IDFN moment when I was playing with my kid. Being in a demanding and taxing career, I hardly get time to relax. Because, apart from my job  I was also into social activities in my apartment, office and had a huge group of friends to meet. The household chore was ofcourse there too! So imagine time to relax! Never! Or so I though I was always late. My yesterday’s itinerary always spilled over my today’s and inspite of multi-tasking I always fell short of fulfilling my responsibility. I was never satisfied with myself. I was losing to myself regularly and I didn’t take it lightly. I felt sick, tired and on the verge of breakdown. I had started to believe that I was a failure ‘for ever’. Happiness seemed  like an alien word that never would ever happen in my world.

It was then that my 6 year old kid asked me to play with him. I normally brush aside such requests with “please kiddo, go play with your maid or friends. Can’t you see I am so busy?” but that day I just agreed to! Thought would play for 10-15 mts and then get back to my work but didn’t realize it was more than 2 hrs that I spent with him or should I say with happiness? What we played didn’t make any sense but when I lost myself playing I didn’t realize. All I remember now is ‘the happiness’ that we shared and lived. I am not good in explaining all these things but I just wish you understand what I am trying to say.

I had achieved so much in life and had so much to flaunt by way of ‘doing meaningful stuff’. But they didn’t give ‘the happiness’ that ‘this happiness’ gave while playing with the kid. Please don’t brush it aside as a ‘mother thing’ or ‘oh, everyone feels that way with their kids’. Please try to understand what I am trying to tell. What I did and with whom didn’t actually matter. It was ‘how’ I did it that made the difference. Let me explain. When I was behind achieving things or performing various duties or fulfilling various responsibilities I was bound by expectations of ‘self’ more than others. I wanted to give my best. And that added to others expectations increased my anxiety, fear and stress as I went about my work, though most of the time  I was more or less always applauded for ‘good performance’ I was never able to relish that achievement because of ‘next job to be completed’ tag. This was a vicious cycle. Performance, comparisons and dead-lines were synonymous with every task I took up – I mean literally every task. No doubt, I was always edgy and restless.

But when I was playing with the kid, there was no such thing. In the course of playing, I even lost conscious of time and it was then that I discovered happiness. At that time, I didn’t realize it. late in the evening when I was humming as I was going about the routine that I realized that not only was I humming – which I hadn’t since years but I was also smiling as I was doing my chores. Yes, I was ‘happily doing’ the ‘boring routine’. How impossible was that! Moreover, I was not tired like other days. Then it stuck me that it was a ‘special thing’ that happened. Later, say after 2-3 days I suddenly saw the connection between the events and its’ effects on my psyche and I knew I had my ‘IDFN’ moment.
