Me, My Guru – On Empty boat

life in my empty nest (With images) | Boat, Words, Sayings

After sometime, as we were talking among ourselves our Guru got up and left! Swetha got up to leave but Aziz stopped her and asked “Guru may come back. Why are you leaving?”

75 Short Inspirational Quotes for Women - Inspiring Famous Quotes

She smiled and replied “I came with a question. She answered even without me opening my mouth. My question being answered, I am leaving to put it to practice”.

“What was the question?” asked Rahul “if you don’t mind sharing with us…”

“Oh no” she replied “because of someone’s decision, I had lost few hundreds. And I was boiling. Even after doing so much sadhan if I am to bear this loss, then what is the point? I actually was boiling with anger when I entered here. But our Guru started the session with this story even before I could open my mouth to vent out my anger. Having received my answer, I am leaving” she was calm and smiling now.

I was surprised. So, I didn’t miss anything and yet I didn’t understand the story or take anything from it. I attended our session from the start. But this girl received her answer?!

“But what is the answer that you received” I asked a bit surprised.

460 Bruce Lee Quotes To Skyrocket Your Personal Growth

We sat there dumb stuck. Now coming to think of it each one of us had a list of issues that bothered us, irritated us, angered us or frightened us. For some it was problem with the boss and to other it was sister-in-law. One suffered because of ‘bad tenant’ while the other complained about insensitive spouse. Each had a reason to be bothered about and be angry with. We were thinking the reason to be the external situation. And all these years/time we were trying to fix that!

Now it was clear! What happened or didn’t happen wasn’t the cause of our restlessness and desperation. The ‘expectation’ we had ‘within’ us was the basis of our inner turmoil and desperation. We lay ‘condition’ of how people are supposed to behave and how life has to set the situations. Our desire was just an excuse that pushed this anger we had within us.

Shunryu Suzuki Quotes (157 wallpapers) - Quotefancy
Because we were not looking within we didn’t’ know ourselves correctly and completely. Because we didn’t know ourselves, we didn’t understand origin of our desires and their nature. Since we didn’t know ourselves we didn’t get connected to self. Not being connected to self, how can we expect them to love us? As we didn’t love ourselves we sought validation and appreciation from others. And as we didn’t know self and love self, we couldn’t appreciate and validate when we received the same from others?

Questions addressed :
  • Why does 'life' not give me things the way I want and when I want?
  • What is life and how to enjoy it?
  • Why is it difficult to live life?

Points to note :
  • Any desire - be it physical, psychological, material or emotional is at the end of the day only a thought! Think about that!
  • If every desire is based on just a 'thought' is our suffering and going berserk for that worth the dime?
  • We are so tuned to 'conditioning' everything in life and we have started conditioning 'life' and its expression too!
  • Let's  rephrase 'life' as a 'pleasant surprise gift' from the Universe that unfolds itself layer by layer every single day.
  • How life is to unfold is not what we can ever do or hope to have control over. But we can learn to experience the 'wonderment' that it is by shifting our perception of life...
  • Life is not a problem. It is an experience to be had.
Life Tip :

When it was summer, I enjoyed making some 'Indian dried fryums' (vadiyalu) using the excess heat of sun to my advantage.

The heat caused lots of physical discomfort and ailments. But the advantage I took of heat was also immense.

Now that it is raining, I am listening to songs sitting in the balcony and writing blog for you people.........

every season comes with its benefits and limitations.............so it is with life and desires too........

Me, My Guru – On Empty boat

Me, My Guru – On Empty boat

There is no fear for one whose mind is not filled with desires ...

“A monk was passing by a beautiful river. It’s flow and the sound it made was musical. Various trees on the banks of river gave that serenity to that place. Birds chirping on the branches of those trees, squirrels running along the branches, butterflies abound in that area made it so magical! The cool breeze put anybody’s worries to rest at this place. There were trees laden with flowers of various kinds emitting fragrances that soothed any tired soul! Oh! This place seemed heaven! The monk drank the beauty of this place”

I heard our Guru talk as I entered the premises. Today, once again I was late. I simply and silently joined the session. When I heard her explain ‘that place’ in such detail, I was bit confused. Why was she describing ‘that place’ in such detail?

Her explanation continued “The monk sat on a rock under a tree for some time. He felt very peaceful and calm. He smiled! He had touched his ‘bliss state’ today! He was sure of it. These many years o sadhan had brought him to this! He felt accomplished. He looked around. He found none. He couldn’t share this with anyone now! How bad!

Mindfullness And Empty Boats | Boat, Empty, Mindfullness
It was then that his eyes fell on a boat tied to a tree. He was very happy. He thanked God and his Guru for giving him this moment! He walked towards the boat with sure steps. He climbed it and started to row the boat. He decided to go to the middle of the river, stop rowing the boat and then mediate for long hours. He could put all his meditation techniques to best use today! He was so excited. Oh, this was blissful! He reached the middle of the river. He pulled the oar and put it in the boat. Yes, everything was perfect. He closed his eyes and started meditating. 1,2 ,5 minutes – there was a scratching sound on the wood that was irritating. The monk got irritated. He realized with the way the boat was shaking and the sound that reached his eyes that some boat was hitting his boat. Let it be. He expected the other boatman to move away – soon! 5-10 mts passed. But no, the sound didn’t stop. He could feel the other boat hitting his boat. He got angry at the insensitivity of the other boatman. Couldn’t he see that ‘the monk’ was meditating? Why was he being so irresponsible? It also meant that he was insensitive. ‘Oh, I know now. He takes pleasure in others’ pain. It gives him great pleasure to give pain to others. He was a sadist! Yes, it was so true. He was asuric in nature. How come such people operate in this world? Does God not punish them? No, they should not be punished in some distant future. They should be punished now!”

questions addressed :
  • What should be addressed if I am not to suffer when things go wrong in my life?
  • What is the definition of perfect life?
  • What is freedom?
  • How does meditation help?
Thoughts worth understanding :
  • Our inner world decides and controls our outer world
  • We experience the world the way we are inside
  • Heal self and the world around you will change
  • What is inside you reflects in what is around you
  • To change the way you receive from the Universe, change the way you send message to the Universe from 'inside'.
  • What we are is something nobody can hide and manipulate from Universe. It gives us what we deserve on what we are! Not on what we want or wish for!

Life Tip :

Sometimes, all I want is a good night sleep and even that seems to be a miracle that is hard to come by.........

Today's miracle :

This is actually shared by a reiki channel Ms. Udaya Bhanu who was admitted during these testing times in the hospital for severe health reasons couple of days ago, but was miraculously treated and discharged from the hospital today. She wanted to thank reiki and reiki Guruji. She had few experiences that were beyond explanations and logic........

These were the thoughts that the ‘meditating monk’ was engaged in. When he could take it no more and his anger having consumed him, he opened his eyes to shout at the other boatman. He also wanted to give him ‘his peace of mind’.

As he opened his eyes to consume the ‘wronging boatman’, to his surprise he found no man there. He saw that ‘an empty boat’ was hitting his boat all thanks to the cool breeze which had soothed his self!

Then he realized that that boat had drifted along with the wind and had hit his boat. It was ‘an empty boat’.

The moment he realized this he saw what he was. All his arrogance of having done meditations for so many years came to naught!

He simply took his oars, rowed to the bank and walked towards the ashram to resume his studies” so saying she – our Guru, closed her eyes and became silent. Since I didn’t know the context I sat silent not knowing how to process the story.

Rahul served tea for all along with samosas today. We relished our tea with samosas.

We thanked Rahul and Aziz for getting these tasty samosas for all. They always shared some food item with all of us. Some days, even I think of getting something but getting it for almost 20-30 present there seemed a very expensive affair. Moreover, no one was there for me to cook at home. I had my reasons. But I sincerely thanked them for getting and sharing these snacks with us. I was very grateful that way?!

Points to think about :

  • If we change the definition of our issues in life, does it make it different?
  • Are we looking at the facts of life the right way?
  • If we change the perception towards what is happening to us and around us, does it give us strength to live with it and deal with it?

Questions addressed :

  • What is the purpose of life?
  • What is that which I need to let go?
Lines that can reflect our personality and duality in our character :

"Some days, even I think of getting something ................ getting and sharing these snacks with us. I was very grateful that way?!" -

look at these lines. Look at the way "I" is thinking here. Look at the way "I" is justifying his actions here. If "I" is really the one who wants to get something he wouldn't be dilly dallying so many times (read previous posts too...) about getting and not getting. He doesn't want to get. That is fact!
And yet he fools himself with umpteen reasons that justifies his not getting anything. No one is telling him anything. But deep down he knows his nature. How does he see himself?
And therefore, to convince himself that he is good, he gives himself all these lame reasons.
Just by saying I am grateful, he thinks he comes out as a very good and grateful person! No doubt, he claims returns from his life based on these pretenses of himself and suffers when he doesn't receive so!
Think about it!
Sit in meditation and look within. How and what does this "I" represent you and your life?
It is so easy to look at others flaws. But as Kabir would say -
