Me, My Guru – Hiss, but don’t bite

 Contd....

Me, My Guru – Hiss, but don’t bite

Pointers to understand this post:

Buddha was touched. He healed the snake and patting its hood said with a smile in a very gentle voice “I asked you not to bite. But, I didn’t ask you not to hiss”.” – see how Buddha answers the Cobra. He is not judging the snake. He is not talking with arrogance of knowledge. He is not forcing his knowledge. He is gentle.

People say “But, when we give advice, they get angry maam”. Look at the way you talk, behave and conduct yourself – even from within. Therein, lies the reason for their behavior towards your advice.

The snake smiled.”- The snake having the quality of a true shishya listened with emptiness when his Guru spoke. He didn’t complain to Buddha saying “I followed your advice trusting you and see what happened to me??!!”

He understood the teaching correctly now. It bowed to the Master and thanked him for showing the right path!” – When the person has purity of intent he will understand with a simple gesture, word or a smile even. Purity of intent is important here.

Did she listen to our conversation? But that was almost impossible!!! We were left with these questions – as ever with ourselves.” – Miracles happen all around us and in so many ways and so many times, yet because of our ego, we can’t see it or validate it.

We should learn to hiss – but not bite!” – We memorize so many tag lines in this spiritual path. We quote them right! But, living them is not something that is possible for everyone. Concentrate on living them - a little a day!

No quote is imbibed overnight. No quote is a sentence. A quote is an 'action verb' that needs to be put into practice a million times a day for it to become effective in your life!

Me, My Guru - On life and death – III!

Me, My Guru - On life and death – III!

I hated this guy more than ever! Why had he to open his mouth? He is ever trying to please her with questions that encouraged her to talk more on such topics. He simply could’ve kept his mouth shut. But no, he had to open his mouth! Wow!

Our Guru needed no further push or pleading. She started “Buddha one day came to know of his death. He asked all his students to listen to his important declaration. He said “In just 4 months I am going to leave this physical body. I no longer will operate with this body. So, if any of you need to ask or know something that I can teach, ask or seek from me. I’ll still be able to guide you in physical form for next 4 months. Make best use of this time!” so saying he became silent.

Listening him say this all students were shocked and disturbed. Some became restless. Few started to cry. Some started to discuss about the future of the ‘Sangha’ (the order of monks that Buddha established like mutt). It was evident they were scared, angry and restless. They didn’t know what to do. There was one student who was sitting in the corner looking intently at Buddha. He saw the ‘pleasantness’ in Master’s face. He noticed his composure – so relaxed, so composed and so still! He said to himself “All my life, I’ve wasted on little nothings. I had an opportunity to be at so close proximity to such a great Master. And yet, all I could think about was ‘dead routine non-sense’. But, still there is 4 months left. Let me meditate 24/7 as per my master’s guidance. Let me at least walk on the path of realization even if I can’t get one in this 4 months.

Master always says “Each one has to realize by himself”. Let me practice from this moment on!”

Immediately after, he became silent from outside and inside too!

# life and death, living life, make moments count, long life, meaningful life, full of life, life, death, problems and solutions, inevitable and how to face them, suffering is optional,

On understanding this post :

"Listening him say this all students were shocked and disturbed. ....." - Look at the reactions of all the students. Varied! Situation is same but the reaction and response is so different from one another. Similarly, we face the same ups and downs in life and yet the way we respond or react to it depends on who we are. And that is in our control. And that response or reaction is the deciding factor of our 'pain and suffering' levels in our life.

One person may have just one event or wish not being fulfilled and he goes crazy over that. He loses it all. He is ever angry and restless. He is not able to enjoy the 'other abundance' in life.

Whereas, the other one may have nothing in life. He may be inflicted with physical ailment that pains him day and night. He may not have a career that supports him or gives him regular income. HE may not have any support from his family too. Not only that he may be having problems of every kind given by his family, friends and others in his life - day in and day out - and yet, every one who meets him thinks he is the most happiest person on Earth!! He is envied by one and all. They assume he has it all for he is ever so happy and his happiness is ever so infectious. He is always surrounded by people seeking help and support from him. He motivates others to be optimistic, happy, hopeful and peaceful. He shares and cares and encourages others to do same. He forgives and tells everyone of its benefits.

The difference is 'attitude'.

"There was one student who was sitting in the corner looking intently at Buddha. " - 1.There may be many students in a masters life but hardly one or two actually follow what the master has to teach.

2. The understanding may happen at any moment. But the preparation for that moment has to be in process right from now. Only then we become 'available' before it is too late.

3. However bleak the situation and however inevitable the situation, there is something to take from it. The one with right mind can take the right from a bad situation too.

4. Look for the 'good' in every situation and the good will come in abundance towards you.

"Immediately after, he became silent from outside and inside too!" - All the precious time and energy is lost in wasteful blabbering, arguing, trying to understand logically and in analysing. Instead, simply put to use the techniques given by the healing process and get benefitted. Sadhan, sadhan and sadhan and nothing like sadhan!

Stories and all! He said, I said!

Stories and all! He said, I said!

He said, I said

He said “You don’t know what it is to be a single child with no siblings to share anything with! It is all about being lonely!”

He wasn’t talking ‘all’ in one go but seeing my go all wild, he kept adding one sentence after another to prove his point – that of his having pain and him suffering!

After he exhausted all his ‘reasons’ to prove his pain, I simply said “O.k., then – take mine!” (meaning – take my siblings to fill that gap in your life)

He rolled his eyes and all he said was “o.k, I get it and no thanks! I am good!”

# Stories and all series, pain, comparison, exchange of pain

Points to take from this :

  • We always are so 'deepin ourselves, our pain, our desires, our expectations and fulfillment of our wants and needs that we have no energy, time and need left to look into others' pain, limitations, situations, issues and problems.
  • The day we set aside our 'ego' and look around us, we would do so much good to ourselves and our well-being.
  • We would look into so much of suffering and tough challenges and situations that others face that ours would look so small in their comparison. Is that the reason for us to not look around?
  • No one would exchange their headache with the other - then what are we complaining about? Think about it!

Me, My Guru - On guru

Contd....

Me, My Guru - On guru

Buddha didn’t happen in a day.

Your Rama, Krishna weren’t born that way.

Your master didn’t acquire his nature with an attunement or his degree.

Each of these people looked within again and again. They found their weaknesses and worked on it – day in and day out. They were not ashamed of failing. They did not shy of falling. But they didn’t let failing or falling stop them from getting up. Every time they were knocked down on their weakness won, they stood up to work on it. At every juncture they had choices to make – pleasant over right to make. But they didn’t. They always choose ‘right’ over ‘pleasant’. Not to please others or to gain a place in heaven or material benefit but ‘right’ for the sake of ‘right’. They were who they were for all the choices they made for all the journey they did, for all the loses that they bore, for all the pain that they endured, for all the rebuke they faced, for all the love that they shared in exchange for the hatred that they received.

When you do what your Guru does, you are fanning your ego, pretentious and manipulative nature into justifying your actions. You are choosing an alibi for your failures. You are trusting pretention over reality.

But when you do what your Guru asks you to do, you are working on your limitations, working towards your potential and you are overcoming fear and ignorance and walking towards love and trust!

Now there is the difference for you to see on both the paths.

Now it’s for you to take the call accordingly!” having said this she left.

We were so stuck with the words that we didn’t miss her much.

This was too much to process. We need to revisit her words again and again to get its import. And then would start the tougher job of applying it in day to day life. But the day these work-outs showed results, well that would be our graduation day. And there would be huge party but for now, well its boring homework time and we were ready with flask of tea to do it religiously – for now.....!
