On believers and non-believers!

On believers and non-believers!

Who did it   ...?

In a small town in India, a person decided to open up a Bar, which was right opposite to a Temple. The Temple & its  devotees were upset  and started a  protest campaign to block the Bar from opening, with petitions to Court and  conducted mass daily prayers  against the Bar business. Bar work progressed despite all this.. When it was almost complete and about to open a few days later, a strong lightning struck the Bar and it was burnt and destroyed to the  ground.

The temple folks were rather smug and puffed-up after that divine event, till the Bar owner sued the Temple authorities on the grounds that the Temple through its congregation & prayers was ultimately responsible for the ill fate of his dream project, either through direct or indirect actions or means and claimed heavy damages as compensation.

In its reply to the court, the temple and the devotees vehemently denied all responsibility or any connection that their prayers were reasons to the bar's burning down. As the case made its way into court, the judge looked over the paperwork at the hearing and commented:  " I don't know how I'm going to decide this case, but it appears from the paperwork, we have a bar owner who believes in the power of prayer and we have an entire temple and its devotees that doesn't."

What does this story tell us about faith?

What is there to take from this story?

Who is right - bar owner or the devotees?

What should be the verdict?

Where to apply it in our lives?

I was searching for another story on faith and came across this story. It touched my heart as it reminds me of so many thoughts I had about people using their worship to bring doom on someone and people who in spite of knowing that their deeds are unwelcome and is causing stress in the community go ahead and do it anyways.

I will try to answer the questions:
What does this story tell us about faith?
People on both sides had full faith that their deeds will be fruitful until the point where it costed them something. Once it came to bearing losses, they did not want to take responsibility. Their faith was nowhere to be seen or heard of.

What is there to take from this story?
When you do something take responsibility. If you cannot take responsibility then don’t do it, be it prayer, job or anything..

Who is right - bar owner or the devotees?
No one. For reasons stated above.

What should be the verdict?
They both were at fault. The business owner thought he was capable of handling people’s attitude when he became aware of their protests. If he thought he was capable enough then he should face it. On the other hand people used a place of worship to hurt someone instead of asking for guidance and peace.. i.e. Instead of asking god to show them (including the businessman) a way to work through it and let the businessman either chose another location for this business or chose another business at this location. Now, both should take responsibility and work together. This was a loss not just for the businessman but also for the devotees as they lost their good character by giving into fear and anger.

Where to apply it in our lives?
It applies to every aspect of our lives. One such thing would be when we come across mean people, people who bully and hurt us. It could be family, friend, coworker or anybody. Learn to work together. If the differences are too huge then learn to forgive first and then try to work with them. I know, it’s easy to say but not so easy when we are doing it. It needs immense faith to do it.

I hope I was able to understand and judge the situation appropriately.

Now I will go back and search for the story I was looking for 😊

Thank you!
