Guru poornima

….contd….

What is the role of a Guru and what does he give to a student for which we are ‘stressing’ on gratitude filled with ‘respect’?

Are all Gurus one and the same?

Does every Guru give the same to his student?

Does a student receive the same from every Guru? If not, what should he do to receive the best from his Guru?

If what a student receives depends on the Guru, then how to select the best Guru for self?

These and few other questions frequently asked should be addressed before going into ‘how to celebrate this day to benefit maximum out of this day?’

There are different types of Gurus.

(Mother Yashoda teaching values to Krishna and Balarama)
(Doesn't every mother?)

1. Parent and elders in the family: Mother is considered the ‘first guru’ of every child. Why? Because, she teaches him all life skills like eating, bathing, brushing, cleaning, walking, talking, values, praying and what not….we use these skills all through our life and hence are indebted to our parents for having patiently taught us all these life skills. So is the role of other elders in our family. In eastern country, especially in India, even neighbours pitch in to teach the kids of the locality.  I have come across so many people who teach poetry, shlokas (Sanskrit vedic hymns), tables and even tell stories to the kids in the neighbourhood.  So we owe them all gratitude.

(A good teacher who can transform both the student and his life)

Teachers who have taught us in school: Next we have teachers who have taught us our subjects in schools. Apart from them, we also have teachers who teach us skills or arts like dance, music, sports and games (like cricket, chess, hockey etc) etc. They also are considered Gurus. Dronacharya, Sage Parashuram, Guru Sandipani (Guru of Lord Shri Krishna and Balarama) et like not only come under this category but also are the best in the category. They set highest goal for any ‘teacher’ to be.

(One of India's best actress and a dancer has immense respect for her Guru Birju Maharaj. And why not, dance transformed her and her life for good...)

(Great Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar with his student/daughter. A daughter couldn't have asked for a better Guru...)

3.Management Gurus: These are Gurus who teach ‘management techniques’ which are beneficial for a person to lead a successful life in a materialistic world. Deepak chopra and others come under this category. They may teach the same in person or through books, seminars or electronic media like Tv, Utube etc. People read books of such people like Robin Sharma, Paula Coelho and get inspired or even learn few things and hence consider them as their Guru ..

A ready learner will grab every opportunity that comes his way to learn.  From time immemorial people have been inspired, found answers and guidance from poetry and poets, authors, writers and it is no mean task to inspire people through these ways.....

Written word has greater impact than perceived by many. No doubt it is said "Pen is mightier than sword!". This is so because great revolutions and change have been brought forth with the written  words....and by guiding people thus they automatically become 'gurus' in their own right....here such people act as guides or inspiration to others...

Hence it is the responsibility of the writer to write sensibly.
