Shishya Aruni and his Guru Bhakthi

…contd….

Why is this important? Well, only a student who is not ashamed of his Masster, who is not jealous of his Master, who doesn’t compete with his Master will be humble enough to have faith in his Master to receive what his Master is capable of giving him. A look at the story of Aruni – a great disciple will give you a clearer picture of this fact.

Well, we are talking about the time when students would be staying in ‘Ashrams’ along with their Guru. Students would do all the work of ashram themselves and also cater to the needs of the Guru – like keeping firewood and other requirements ready to keep the sacrificial fire burning, tending of cows in the ashram, look after the requirements of Guru like making his bed, collecting items required for his Pooja, keeping his room, clothes clean et like. In such ashram of a Guru Dhaumya there was a student called Aruni. He hardly would be able to grasp whatever was taught. But, his bhakthi for Guru was unquestioned. He would be ever ready to do ‘seva’ to his Guru. This he would do without any ulterior motive or desire. It was sheer bhakthi for his Guru that would drive him to wait on his Guru. His intent was ever pure.

On such night it was raining heavily and Guru Dhaumya allotted different duties to each of his student. He called Aruni and asked him to go to the fields and see that the mud bunds built were intact so that excess water did not flow into the fields. Aruni rushed to fields to see that the bund was broken and water was gushing into the fields. It wasn’t the era of ‘cell-phones’ or ‘whatsapp’ to ask his Guru’s next order. He tried his best to build it and arrest the flow of water but nothing seemed to work. After having tried various methods and failed, Aruni simply lied down on the bund to arrest the flow of water into the fields. For him, fulfilling his Guru’s order was only important. He never had “I tried but still nothing happened. What else could I do? So I came back…” etc nonsense and it certainly was not his idea of carrying off his Guru’s order.

In the morning, when all students assembled, Guru Dhaumya found Aruni missing and asked about his whereabouts. When nobody could tell as to where he was, Guru remembered the work he had allotted to him and rushed to the fields – only to see Aruni laying down frozen on the ground arresting the flow of water. His eyes filled with water, lifted Aruni and embraced him and with heart felt with love blessed Aruni “for your bhakthi and innocence I reward you with the knowledge that you’ll receive even without learning it”. And Aruni knew all that he had to learn.

Everyone wants Guru to do this for them but no one wants to have bhakthi of Aruni. You receive what you give. Your intent decides your returns. And to think people “pray” that their Master goes from their midst to be “the centre of attraction”. How sorry is their state of existence!

But our Guru continued her explanation oblivious to our fight within “Before understanding difference between Masters and our words let us see one example. Imagine a bulb. Now it is covered by a vase which is broken at various places. Now see/imagine the light that comes out of that bulb. Look at the amount of space lighted up because of all those cracks in that vase. What do you see?” she asked.

About The Mind Zen Quotes. QuotesGram
“A room brightened up and looking beautiful!” we replied.

“Exactly! Now that bulb represents our consciousness, the energy that we, the atman – anything you call it. Vase represents the etheric sheath or aura of Masters”.

“So, our Masters aura is broken?” blurted one of us.

And we all laughed. We loved to see our masters fail. We loved to make them less grand than they were. We loved to see them fall! We loved to break them.

“No! His ‘ego body’ is broken. And so, the light of ‘his consciousness’ expresses through that ego sheath so beautifully. Anybody who works on breaking his ego body gets to use his ‘inner and greatest energy’ to work through him. And that can move mountains.

Whereas we – we have hard ‘ego bodies’ not letting ‘the light’ of Divine express through us”

“Then where do we draw our energies from?” asked Kshama.

108 Buddha Quotes on Meditation, Spirituality, and Happiness
She used the term ‘we’ while explaining ‘ego bodies’. Did she use it knowing our anger and to appease that or was she saying she was just one among us?

It would be a welcome thought and fact for most of us who found it difficult to put her on the pedestal. But whatever, we were to address that at a later date.

Read the above post to understand these points :

  • All the students are staying with the same Guru. Then how come Aruni received all when others received not?
  • Is Sage Dhaumya partial or egoistic who is flattered by the act of Aruni? Does anyone want to be a student of such a Guru who is so easily fooled by a simple act?
  • No. It was not the act that touched Sage Dhaumya. It was the sincerity of Aruni that touched his heart and love flowed unrestrained. Love is God and the Love of Guru when received, Universe works in favour of such a student.
  • That's why Judas suffered the curse of Jesus when Jesus was sold by him "It was better if you hadn't existed". And Judas committed suicide and yet he is said to linger in the Universe still.........whereas other students of Jesus went on to become great Apostles during their life time......
  • Remove Guru and shishya from this story and replace it with Universe/God/Reiki and yourself. Universe is ever benevolent and ready to bestow abundance in all walks of life but it is uour nature that becomes block in receiving it.
  • Healing doesn't force Universe to give us anything. It makes us eligible to receive what Universe has been giving to us always!
  • Heal, let go - of that anger, resentment, hatred.
  • Drop that reasoning that is justifying your anger and hatred and asking you to protect your ego. Drop it and you become miracle!
  • Let go off the emotions that are creating hell for you every waking minute of your life and then lo! you become a miracle!
Pointers to understand this post :

a."It would be a welcome thought and fact for most of us who found it difficult to put her on the pedestal" - Go through the entire blog of last 9-10 years. No where in 'Me, my guru series you will find Guru asking to be put on pedestal. She never demands any adoration, flattery or anything. Everything is done and assumed by the students themselves. They think on her behalf and call her both good and bad names. They make her and then become uncomfortable with her 'greatness' that they created and then they tear it apart or find ways to bring her 'image' down. Look at the redundancy of all these acts.......we play these games all through our life. First we make them, then we break them! Look into every relationship. First we glorify someone and say we can't live without them and then call them names and say they created hell in our life. How and when? Give it a thought!

b."But whatever, we were to address that at a later date. ..." - Even when we get a thought that is worth a dime and is like a light house that is showing us where to go, we shut it down very smartly (thinking we are smart and doing it right!) and go about our business of being with our self that is disturbing and senseless.....why do we postpone facing ourselves as much as possible?

Miracle a day!

on Guru poornima....

on Guru poornima....

Tomorrow being Guru poornima, those of you who have a Guru - whosoever it may be - say Paramacharya (the walking saint), Shankaracharya, Raghavendra Swamy, Ramana Maharshi, sai baba or our Reiki Guru Mikao Usui......

Sit in meditation for atleast one hour chanting "OM GURUBHYO NAMAHA".

You can have your Guru's photo in front of you.

Light a candle, lamp and also incense stick.

Ofcourse, you should have cleaned the place in the first place.

Sit on a soft cloth preferably white (just an option not compulsion) facing either East or North.

If you don't have your Guru's photo to place separately in front of you, then imagine your Guru's feet and then start chanting.

Put your phone on silent mode.

If you can sit longer in meditation, very good....

Don't do if you are expecting anything in return.

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Me, My Guru – Guru who gave back youth to his shishya!

Now listen to one more story. In the ashram of a Guru was a student named Gautama who was very devoted to his Guru. He did all the work assigned to him by his Guru happily, completely and meticulously. As was the custom in those days in Bharath, students lived in an Ashram of a Guru. The students treated Guru’s wife as the mother who fed them and looked after the boys as a mother would. And so, works like getting fruits, wood for cooking and related works would be told by Guru’s wife to his students. It was also the student’s duty of the day. This job was also done lovingly by our student Gautama. On the day of graduation, Guru permitted all to leave except Gautama. He didn’t flinch – he didn’t cry, feel miserable nor was angry. He resumed his studies. He continued doing the of the Ashram too.

The next batch of students also left but he was not relieved by his Guru. Gautama didn’t question his Guru. He didn’t ask for clarification. He didn’t get angry or depressed. He resumed his duties and studies.

Year after year, batch after batch would come and leave. And still, his Guru never permitted him to leave. He was 70 years old now. Guru’s wife felt very bad for Gautama who was such a good student and person who had served so long without complaining even once.

“Gautama is already 70 years old. When will he go out of this Ashram, when will he get married, when will he start his Ashram and teach others? Why are you stopping him from passing out? I don’t see any flaw in him. So, why are you not letting him go?”

Me, My Guru – Indra and I

Me, My Guru – Indra and I

For many days, nay years she had been telling of ‘karma’. We seemed to understand it. We hated that topic. Yet, it fascinated us sometimes. And on other times, it just seemed repetitive. And yet, after all these years we still hadn’t got to understand what karma exactly meant or how to avoid it in real time! Hence, we sincerely sat through her lecture hating it for being repetitive (on this subject) and thinking it had nothing to do to the fulfillment of our desire.

I don’t know if she knew our thoughts in this topic. And yet here was one more day allocated by her to this never ending subject and presumably favourite of hers – karma today!

Our Guru started her explanation today with her story today – like most of the days “In the days of yore lived a Guru with his Shishya in the outskirts of a village. He taught the Shishya for 15 whole years. That was the custom in those days. A boy around age 6-8yrs would be sent to stay with a Guru to learn that he needed to learn. He would stay at his Guru’s place, doing mundane daily chores of the ashram. His routine chore would be fixed. Every student would be assigned some routine of the ashram which each would complete before coming and sitting down to learn from the Guru.

A Shishya would be sincere then unlike now-a-days. They would do their chores like sweeping, cleaning, gardening, tending cattle, getting and filling water, plucking flowers and the regular routine chores. They would do all these chores happily and with love and respect for their Guru.

In return they were fed and taught by their Guru.

# My, my Guru, Indra and I, purpose of life, right and wrong, on following orders, on breaking rules,

also read : https://kantipadam.blogspot.com/search?q=aruni to understand the right qualities that a student is 'supposed' to have. These are 'essential qualities' not 'optional qualities'. See how a student has these qualities he becomes already eligible for Guru's love and thereby his Grace.

Story Markers :

  • We hated that topic. Yet, it fascinated us sometimes. And on other times, it just seemed repetitive. And yet, after all these years we still hadn’t got to understand what karma exactly meant or how to avoid it in real time! - Look at the pitiful state of affairs here. It is clearly said "..we haven't understood in ......in real time" and yet they say they find it repetitive. They say we hated that topic. Look at this para again. What does it tell about us? Inspite of not having understood something we can hate it. There is no desire in us to know it especially one that is basis of all our destiny, pain and suffering, desire and what not! It is basis for what we get and don't get. It is the reason we experience what we do. And yet, we are good crying about someone. We are comfortable going to all and sundry asking for blessing but not patient enough to know the 'Law' and stop making the mistakes that is causing trouble in our lives!? Why? Think about it!
  • I don’t know if she knew our thoughts in this topic. And yet here was one more day allocated by her to this never ending subject and presumably favourite of hers – karma today! - Look at the Guru on the other hand patiently talking and teaching the same topic again and again in various ways for the student to get it. And yet, the student in all his haughtiness is angry with her for not 'answering his question' or addressing his issue?!

Points to be understood :
  • Guru explains and waits for student to understand the basics till he can move on to other topics. He is not credited for the same too many times. That is love!
  • Being unable to see through this act of Guru and living life being irritated with, angry with Guru is Student. He is ever crying finding excuses out of thin air. To complain, cry and seek attention is what a student does. But that is not his right! He is not being 'right' when he does it as and when he does that!
Homework :
Sit in meditation and seek some answers. Ask -
"What does Guru mean to me?"
"What do I expect from my Guru?"
"What has my Guru done to me till now?"

On Teacher's day!

On Teacher's day!

Have we validated every one who has taught us?

Image result for teachers quotes

Right from childhood we are learning and growing seeing, reading and hearing from people all around us. The first teachers - our parents are our first teachers. Have we thanked them today? Have we made a list of things that we learnt, received from them and that too unasked.....are we validating it - atleast today?

Image result for teachers quotesEvery sibling, relative, neighbour, pet that we grew up with taught us 'how to be' and 'how not to be'. It can be as simple as making a tea, cutting a vegetable, making a bed or caring for a plant....they are our teachers too! They have moulded us - we are who we are because of all the people in our lives......

"Judge not for ye shall be judged"

जाती ना पूछो साधू की पूछ लीजिये ज्ञान
मोल करो तलवारी का पढ़ा रहने दो म्यान।   - कबीर

jaathi na poocho sadhu ki pooch leejiye gyan
mol karo talvari ka padha rahane do myaan ..

Why are you asking the caste of the monk/teacher? Ask what him his knowledge....

Image result for teachers quoteswhen you buy a sword you assess its worth by looking at the sword not its case.....

This beautiful couplet of Sant Kabir (Poet Saint of India) says how stupid and ignorant bother about the redundant fact of the teacher and leave the essence - his knowledge.

If you are only demanding, expecting, angry, conditioning and judging your teacher, how can you complain later that you did not receive his 'grace'?

Be a 'student' first then expect him to be your master!

Image result for teachers quotesBeing a student doesn't mean giving your 'wish list' to him and demanding /cajoling / flattering him to fulfill that for you...be a student and develop the qualities of the student, then 'your Guru' would come into your life......

And what better teacher than life and time.......don't treat them as your enemies - they are your best friends come to teach you about yourself and the world around you...they work with you to create the world that you desire and dream.....value them, respect them and above all be grateful to them.....

To ponder :

What is your definition of 'master/teacher/Guru'?

Are you working on being a student or expecting someone to fill in the shoes of your master?
