Guru poornima

…contd…..

Please Note: Before we continue this explanation, please note that ‘Guru Poornima’ marks the start of ‘Chaturmas’ – the sacred four months. Please read link on “Chaturmas” for explanation of the same  http://kantipadam.blogspot.in/search?q=chaturmas . The
posts are but not in sequence, please read them as per date....couldn't get them to be in order....

As already explained the day of ‘Guru Poornima’  the first full moon day after the solstice is a time when this planet and all life upon it are most receptive to the cosmic energy and possibilities. The next six months till the winter solstice is the best time to strive for evolving and experiencing the divine possibility that is innate in a human being. So please do regular sadhan to benefit from this special energy vortex of time. You can do hands-on, pranayamam, various forms of meditation, japam, parayanam (study of scriptures) etc).

Respecting elders – When you greet elderly people especially within a family don’t ‘hi’, ‘hello’’ them. Bend down and touch their feet and take their blessings. It is one of the asanas (bending and touching toes) in ‘suryanamskara’ and is very good for spine. It stretches spine and keeps it supple and healthy. Want to remain active, energetic and healthy for long? Simply inculcate this habit of bending elder’s feet to seek their blessings. Good in so many ways. Yes, I know we all have chachis and mamas (uncle and aunts) who irritate us, trouble and hurt us. Practice this with them too! Atleast 50% of them will melt and try to be good later to you. Others forget about them. Think you got your exercise by saluting them.  But this simple act goes a long way in your well being.

Before the start of Kurukshetra war, pandavas went and ‘touched the feet’ of Bhishmacharya, Dronacharya and Kripacharya and sought their blessings. The ‘itihaas’ (history) or mythology as some would say or scriptures as few would argue don’t serve just the purpose of telling a story – a family history of Kuru clan. It teaches us how to behave. It teaches us the ‘right conduct’ by giving live examples. It also explains how a certain behavior effects our karmas and what results we face because of it. It shows ‘how to behave’ and ‘how not to behave’ also through these characters. Don’t listen to discourses as if they were some soap-opera story. They formed the skeleton of our national character and that resulted in abundance in every sphere in our culture and society.

The ‘Bharata varsha’ as India was called then was so rich that country after country came to plunder it and still its splendor was so great at the time of British invasion that Queen of England’s wealth and splendor was considered peanuts when compared to the magnificence of Nawab of Calicut. This Nawab was considered a very small ‘Raja’ by Indian standard, so you can imagine the wealth of Rajputs, moghals and other such dynasty..

Vasco da gama stated that Indian ships were 10 times larger than European ships.
